One interesting feature of the I-Shift is called Eco-Roll, which effectively disengages the box by putting the splitter into neutral. Eco-Roll is activated when you’re using cruise control and the I-Shift box is in auto, in any gear between seven and 12. When the truck’s driveline ECU detects that you don’t need any power, or engine braking, it engages Eco-Roll (which is indicated on the gearshift display as an E+). However, before anyone gets carried away with the idea that you can run down a steel hill in neutral at 44 tonnes, Eco-Roll is deactivated the second you touch the footbrake, use the Volvo Engine Brake or put your foot back on the throttle.
ill have to ask our drivers what a jack knifes like,6 have managed it at our depot in last week or two, ones done it twice,i passed one whod managed to take a fair chunk of central reservation outwhen he jacknifed, the road conditions were terrible, ice ,snow the lot,the trucks in front were doing 40 ish and that was plenty fast enough, driver who jacknifed freely admits he was on limiter, cruise on
,said he thought road wasnt bad ,and thats the problem,in most cases your in the lap of the gods, others its just stupidity, limiter, cruise in those road conditions ,just stupid

i was told when i got back fri a 7th truck had jacknifed that day,but unconfirmed as of now, that figure doesnt include all the ones whove just run off road and ended up in ditches, its no wonder theyve put a memo on board how to drive in adverse weather conditions, steering, speed etc.
stobarts drivers the BEST,not if theres snow or ice about thats for sure
HIya …i,ve just had a read on this topic and may of missed that no one has mentioned you can have a trailer jacknife
or a tractor jacknife.when you are brakeing and you see the trailer just coming round is bad enough.
on some occasions if you,ve needed to brake quite sharpe the unit can brake free and turn round so the trailer is still
going in a straight line and the unit is going backwards. this dos,nt happen as much since ABS has been fitted to trucks.
there was a bad period of jacknifing in the 70,s when new lorries was still pulling old trailers with antique type brakes.
in the 60/70s the trailers did,nt ride horizontal, so tandam axel trailers run with less load on the front axel, this always
locked up when running empty and was a pain in the backside in wet weather.
I had a tractor jacknife one day the footvalve failed and the trailer locked up snatching at the unit and makeing it come
round on the trailer. It was a Foden s39(fibre glass cab) the drivers door was missing and the chockrail was underneath
the seat. the problem was this was a intermittent fault so when the boss checked out the truck there was,nt a problem.
he took the truck for a test drive(no door) and things was ok untill he came back to the yard and tried to stop, bang
straight into a wall. it was a good job the foden had a huge front bumper.

It’s a big fleet so the the odds are greater to start with.Suggest their guvnors read the story of the battle of Jutland in WW1.The admiral at the time (rightly) said there’s something wrong with our zb ships. But some ‘experts’ then blamed it on the crews.Until the Hood blew up years later in WW2.Different context but the moral of the story is exactly the same.
Totally OT, but Jutland is interesting in that much of it was fought in fog and darkness. My grandfather was there as a purser. He made an entry in his diary asking, were we firing on our own ships?
Possibly, as the fleet was divided, but history would never admit to it.

No it’s just that they forgot to put armour plating on the decking as well as the sides.Just like our artics would stand a lot better chance if they had an extra drive axle considering we don’t use chains.
An old Canadian trucker once told me that jacknifing was unheard of until they started fitting front wheel brakes
Lucy:
they were understanding souls there, for all their faults, and bore with me until I pulled myself together. (Bob the Dog take note.)
.
When it came to things like that, I couldn’t agree more. It was the stupid stuff they were jerks about, and Bob couldn’t lie straight in bed.
You were lucky with that caper though…

They started off fitting valves so you could transfer air away from the fronts brakes when it was slippery, but then they stopped doing it. Shame really.

figures are from one depot,10% have jacknifed so im led to believe,if it was 6/7 out of 1,800 its not alot,6/7 out of 60 is a fair few,but with memo on board of how to steer etc etc im sure that figure with drop drastically amazes me how sat at desk pushing buttons on a keyboard gives you such a great insight in how to drive a truck in snow/ice

Not fitting front brakes was aknowledged in the US as contributing to the prevention of jacknifing. It’s common sense that the drive axle will lift and lose weight if the unit is braked at the front wheels.

10% of drivers or 1 in 10.If it was a small firm with just 9 drivers that’s means none and I’ve only had a computer for less than 3 years but drove trucks for 20 years +.

That one might have been down to the driver. Too fast not concentrating approaching the van and tried to brake on a wet road too late.

Extra drive axles bump up costs.
There is no armour plating on modern RN vessels at all. The Falklands proved that. Did they forget? No… it was economical design.
It cost lives.

Good honest answer Tone. They also ‘forgot’ about proper aircraft carriers since the 1960’s when we could have been using Phantoms against those Skyhawks and Super Etendards instead of Harriers.
