DonutUK:
As long as it is full every night, they will carry on charging what they want and doing nothing about the state of the place.
Why would they? They are still raking in the coin, without having to spend anything to attract drivers. The only time they will start to think about improving things is when they start losing money.
Nothing will ever change because drivers, let alone companies, can’t present a united front on issues like parking or facilities.
Plus the majority will put up with any old crap ■■■■ poor standards, both in parking and food quality, instead of finding their own little corners to park up on the edge of town centre facilities.
I’m all for decent truckstops, but those that meet my own standards, I could not give a ■■■■ if the other crap ones shut down.
chester1:
Why would you need to use a truckstop for a 45 unless to use the facilities
It’s called infrastructure.
MSA’s are infrastructure lay-bys are infrastructure other truckstops are private companies with no obligation to give you anything . Folk moan about the lack of facilities in the uk then people just want to use them an not contribute to the upkeep and moan when they disappear

I use truckstops as much as I can, but only if the quality warrants spending my money. Chippenham for example. Tarmac parking. Exellent food. Good showers and toilets.
I don’t see any reason to pay for parking on a bomb site for 45 minutes.

Not many drivers (none that I’m aware of) would have fees for short term parking reimbursed. There are plenty, in my experience the vast majority, of cafes/truckstops that don’t see the need to impose fees on drivers having a short break. I dropped into J26 one day last year for a 45 and had some oik on me right away asking if I’m eating or I wouldn’t be permitted to have a break. I got stung once I won’t be stung again, can’t remember what the price was but it was on the expensive side for toast and beans! I don’t eat at these places every day sometimes not at all in a week but I occasionally have other needs so guess who won’t be shaking me down again? Because that’s what it is when it’s done like this, underhanded and devious. My point is about infrastructure, whether private or otherwise, the government should not permit such behaviour and thankfully the vast majority don’t act in this fashion.

Why the hell would your boss reimburse you for buying a cup of tea . And what the hell has to do with government what a private company charges if they where subsidising them yes but they don’t . If you go in and use the facilities and not brought anything you have cost the truckstop money . There are too many drivers with a mentality of entitlement just because you drive a truck . Granted most truckstops don’t charge for parking until a cpl of hours has past and that’s good on them . At j26 you could have just gone in a brought a cup of tea or either stopped at Thurrock or south Mimms

In a way I agree with you but in a way I don’t. If I was to pay £32 to park there on Monday night, then I would expect to be able to take a 45 minute break there on (say) Wednesday without having to buy a cup of tea. After all, I might not want a cup of tea.
J26 obviously disagree with my viewpoint, so matters are resolved by me never paying £32 to park there overnight.
Truck stops are free in Europe but some have barriers with get a ticket on entry.
You have the choice to buy such an amount in the shop to get a discount on over night parking or free parking.
Buy a meal, free or reduced parking.
German stops , buy a meal , free parking.
At J26 there is a sign that says no breaks to be taken , it is not devious, don’t like it, don’t go in.

I think if the guy recognises you he leaves you alone as I’ve never had him come up and ask if I was eating but if I do go in I usually do eat and I’m not sure he is even there till late after noon when trucks start to come in for the night . but for me going in there depended on the weather due to the mud
commonrail:
Never had that.
I’ve been asked if i’m nighting out…and when i’ve said no…he parks you out of the way.
Same here. Only been in there a couple of times and was simply asked if I was parking up or just stopping for 45 minutes. On indicating the latter, he directed me to the central area leaving the parking by the fences for those staying longer. No mention made of having to buy anything.
toby1234abc:
Parking is open and free but will be full up due to Eastern European drivers on weekly tacho rest and waiting for reloads back to Europe.
If full try the lay by on slip road in both directions by truck stop.
Not sure if shower is open as need token but the toilet should be open.
If nobody answers phone they are shut til January 2nd.
There free parking in West London on , go past Park Royal/Hangar Lane towards M25 .
Before the airport with private jets you see a large retail park with Shell /hotel/casino/bowling alley/Chinese restaurant and other food outlets.
Go around the back on the road for the old BBC outside broadcast depot.
You may see the rock and roll concert trucks parked up.
Ignore the no parking restrictions and signs they are not valid and out of date.
Can’t think where you’re talking about, is it on the left or right?..Obviously the A40 by the sounds of it, the airport must be Northolt, but the only shell garage I know is Greenford, no retail park there though.
yourhavingalarf:
there are queues every night to get into it. In my opinion not because it’s particularly good but because it’s one of the few places to park overnight near London.
.
Exactly.
They can provide crap second rate facilities and still get customers, so they can charge wtf they like because of what you say.
Whether that is a good way to run a business that provides a service is debatable, if it was mine I would go for the Chippenham style of running a business, ie gaining trade by a good reputation for provision of a good service for drivers, but I suppose to that lot we are …‘‘only drivers’’.
Unfortunately for us crap facilities are better than no facilities, they will know that, so they appear to monopolise on this.
As I said, never been there, but I’ve never heard anyone I know praising it.
GORDON 50 , the postcode is W3 0PA for Greenford West London.
The retail park is called the Royal .
Trucks park opposite the college on Kendall avenue.
There some industrial units adjacent to that road and at night ,wagons park there.
Staff and student cars may block you in by the college so leave early .
Come off the A40 on Western Avenue if heading westbound out of London.
Ignore the width restrictions sign and weight limit as you are legal on the estate as turn right before the width limit then right again.
The Chinese is called the Dragon King.
Or turn off at the Shell and turn around .
No HGV parking in the leisure /retail car park.
You can count the stops I use on one hand,if they are good I use them if not I stay away…
My mate is always moaning about parking costs at truckstops but goes in gets a free shower and leaves, now why should they provide a free shower if he won’t pay for the facilities…

Which truckstops give you a free shower?
Or do you mean msa.s.
I confess to using free msa showers, but I would never overnight park on them.

Just what he tells me he does don’t know any specific sites,I thought most were token\key entry,
He is one of these that thinks the world owes him a huge big thank you for been a lorry driver types…and he has actually said seriously too that lorry drivers should get free meals at msa because bus drivers do well a bus driver is bringing 50odd folk in to be ripped off,but he can’t understand that
In fact he is more of an aquaintance than a mate,
