Had to drive one from bellshill to Preston today, the trailers a fridge but only had 2 stacks of empty pallets on. Any truck I’ve driven whether it’s a merc, Scania or daf you can break in slower traffic without having to head ■■■■ the windscreen but in this today which is a 14 plate the breaks have 2 modes, off or emergency stop and no in between.
Is this because I’m empty? Is it a fault? Or at strallis breaks always this dodgy?
Your topic posted twice for some reason, so I’ve merged them into one. dd.
As above ,though I would imagine the trailer is the culprit, probably needs brakes adjusting …How old is the trailer ■■? Have generally found with these issues ,that it is the trailer
think it was the trailer, dropped it and lifted a new trailer and the problem disappeared. Phone depot and they are sending someone from TOM to look at it as its a leased unit so happy days.
Not impressed by this strallis however, take a daf xf over it every day of the week
I find all new braking systems are like that. They basically want you to use the retarder mostly and very little break. Which is ok till you go down a gear because during the gear change the retarder has no effect so the vehicles braking disappears, so you have to plan breaking better and further back. But life isn’t always that easy.
The annoying thing about the stalls is it beeps and flashes up messages like use aux brake or anticipate accelerator pedal release better. It’s basically your da sitting beside you saying “don’t do that do this, aww ffs you were always a let down to me and yer ma. We should have got a dog!”
Anyone remember driving the old Ford D series? Didnt matter what tonnage it was rated at rigid or artic the brakes were either off or fully on! Had the misfortune to drive one rated at 28ton (2817) with the 170 perkins v8 and you really had to keep your distance from anything in front in trepidation in applying the brakes. Absolute horrendous p.o.s, it was truly terrible in every way imaginable and at 28t involved revving the ■■■■ off it through every gear and come a hill would go backwards
You would be correct mate had an axor yesterday that seemed to use all its oil in the one trip as well
There DAFs are new…was the trailer on an Iveco today ■■? trailer did look old
I couldn’t tell you mate I’m in an axor today was spare man all day just doing my only run now. The trailers that don’t have TOM on them are all pretty old though as they’re owned.

I think your referring to the exhaust brake a retarder would continue to work while gearing down
Exhaust brake is retarder. Retarder is technical name, basically prevents exhaust gas leaving engine so slows engine down. But when clutch is engaged the gear is not so vehicle free wheels so when you are braking vehicle speeds up.

An exhaust brake is an exhaust brake. A retarder is something different. Usually hydraulic. Google it.
