Not really, although an exhaust brake provides retardation.
On trucks and buses exhaust brakes are bog standard kit. A retarder is usually an extra added spec and is a driveline component that uses either hydraulic or electromagnetic forces to provide additional slowing reducing braking requirements. They do have a weight penalty though.
On heavy vehicles if someone is talking about a retarder it would be assumed to be a device like this rather than an exhaust brake.

A hydraulic retarder doesn’t operate from the gear box it’s part of the prop shaft assembly.
It’s been a while since I’ve driven a truck with a proper retarder but I’m sure it still provided braking force during gear changes. They tend to make a whining noise when in operation and are a ■■■■ site better than an exhaust brake

This is the correct info. A proper retarder works on the propshaft and is either electro magnetic or hydraulic and as Steveo says are a huge improvement over a standard exhaust brake which just relies on engine compression to work…

I know this because I have been driving one and it also says it on the website of the people that make the ■■■■■■■ thing.
Someone told me to Google it earlier on I wish people would take there own advice. Also apples and oranges are a type of fruit, very different characteristics but can all be group as fruit. Retardation devices are the same.

Any auxiliary braking device on the engine side of the clutch will obviously not be effective if the clutch has disconnected the wheels from the engine so that point is correct.
No-one experienced with trucks would refer to an exhaust brake as a retarder it is a form of retarder under the dictionary definition but would be very confusing terminology.
Although fitted with an engine/exhaust brake as standard the retarder, on the Stralis, is typically the hydraulic ZF intarder, which is usually specced as an optional extra. It’s mated with the ZF Astronic gearbox on the gearbox/driveline side and is the hydraulic type. I know this because I’ve dismantled and put back together a lot of them.

It’s not a dictionary definition it is what the systems are actually called. They use the principle of retardation, which is used in engineering, chemistry and even pneumatics and countless other areas of science.
Just because you have chosen to break down to one syllable words does not make me a inexperienced driver (unless 16 years is inexperienced then fair enough). This whole thing started because I said the retardation breaking drops off during a gear change and people said this doesn’t happen. Which you have said does. Now I am being too technical using the correct terminology? ■■ I am beginning to feel the issue is with my vocabulary not what I am actually saying.
Retardation is the slowing down of a process, opposite of a catalyst or accelerator. It goes beyond truck brakes.

and an exhaust button on the floor for believe it or not the exhaust brake!

Try moving your right ear up two clicks you seem to be retarded.
Wtf retarder is strapped to the back of the box operated from stalk and exhaust brake has round button I press on the floor.
