I've been offered a job

hutpik:
Hi Phil.If this is a true offer. Not wishing to appear rude or sceptical WHY would they offer you the job when ,by my reckoning there must be numerous Dutch drivers also willing to do this work. This is without bringing all the ‘‘exotic’’ drivers into the equation.
I have just had a quick trip down to Danmark from Gällivare and was surprised by the increased number of so called ‘‘specialist transport’’ companies from Holland running up here who i went to chat with[to keep up with my language skills] who had drivers with no grasp of Dutch being of the ‘‘exotic’’ variety.

I havn’t got an answer to that, But i’ll raise the question when i speak to them in a couple of weeks.

Don’t we all.

Runs a firm with drivers working for him (Mini Stobart firm), so that means he will have trucks, and that will mean he could drive one of them instead of working for another company. Problem solved. But this is Limeyphill where things might not be true.

Socketset:
If I commented to my wife that I thought she was tidy and did her job, I’d get a fat lip.

you seen his wife?

Surprised he didn’t dictate to Gist the pay he required, just like he did to Seamus at Nolans. After all, all of us that have known him Know Seamus is a real pushover that’ll give a new driver whatever he wants…

Kerbdog:
limeyphil, definately the Jeremy Clarkson of trucknet haha

Not really, Clarkson talks sense and is actually funny.

An accountant has no bearing on what i make.

So you do your own income/corporation tax, payroll,PAYE returns, lease arrangements, plus minimise your tax liabilities, as well as run the firm.
With all those talents why go driving someone else’s truck?

Of course i do. It takes a bit of setting up with Hmrc/Companies house etc, But when it’s all in place it’s really straight forward.
If my firm was a very large concern, Then i’d need someone doing the work for me.
I have friends that spend twice as much time travelling to their accountants than i do doing it all myself. (and it’s free).

Why would i drive someone elses truck? Because i like driving, and i miss it. I’ve been away from it before, But i always end up back at it.

Drive one of your own trucks? that’s if you have more then one

Limeyphil aka walter mitty

Some of you don’t believe this job exists, Well that’s up to you.
It’s clearly not a wind up, as those on here with a bit of intellect generally see right through it and know from the outset when i’m having a laugh and generally winding people up. This isn’t one of those occasions.

I spoke to the company yesterday. The work in Holland to Belgium and Germany has gone.
The positions available now are based in Lubeck, Germany going to Denmark and Sweden. This is paying 675 euros per week.
In an earlier post i thought the work was all based in Holland, Going to Germany, Belgium, Denmark, and Sweden.
But as it turns out they are two different contracts from two different depots of the same firm.
The following statement will make you all think this is a wind up  . The job starts on the 1st of April

The drivers will meet in Rotterdam, If they are in a car they will park in a secure compound, Then head off in Units to Lubeck. They are then based there and allocated their own lorry. On the weekends off you have a choice of living in the lorry, or using the accomodation that they supply. But it is shared.
You can work there for up to 6 months, Then you must return to the UK. You could do 3 weeks on 1 week off if you want, But if you want the job, Then signing up for the full monty will get you the job.
I don’t know if i’m taking the job, Work is very quiet at the moment.
There’s plenty of positions available if anyone is interested.

I’m not trying to be cynical Phil but that sounds awful.

I think the six month thing is so the employer can minimise their tax and national insurance contributions by claiming you’re none resident or a temporary worker. As for yourself, I reckon you’ll get €675 and told to sort your own tax out.

Obviously the temptation will be ‘… oh well, I’m out of the country HMRC will never notice me’ but in the age of the Internet, they do.

I know of a couple of British and German drivers who got tax bills in the their home Countries on their income earned while working for Foreign firms because they remained residents in their home Country. They got scooped up because their employers had to explain who they were to their own tax authorities.

Anyhow, €675 taxed or not. will not stretch very far while you’re away all week in expensive Euro land…

Good luck Phil, just remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it normally is.

I don’t think it sounds to good to be true, It’s about average.
You can do the job as a ltd company and charge vat though, so that’ll make it a bit more tempting.

At least you would have a little more control over your tax affairs but I’m the cautious type. I would like to know exactly where I stood if the truck got damaged, a load is spoilt or if I copped a big fine somewhere.

I don’t want you to get me wrong, If a driver is young, single and happy to travel Europe for extended periods of time this job might be okay (or at least lead to something better).
If someone is older, with commitments at home, it’s just going to turn into an extended regular Monday grind on the Hamburg ring road with little or no real reward. Or in other words, you’ll be just like those Koops lads at Immingham but in reverse.

BTW. I was weekended in Lubeck once… it was shut.

Straight from the HMRC website:

If you are in the UK and the place of supply of your service is in another EU country, the supply is outside the scope of UK VAT. However, for some supplies, you may need to register and account for local VAT in the country of supply. You will need to check with the tax authority in that country to find out how to treat the services you are supplying.

question you have to ask is why are they looking for uk drivers? ,
why aren’t they employing local German ,Dutch and even the old eastern European’s ,
