Its coming tonight, the new generation Scania

The new Volvo is by far the best looking truck, but that counts for nothing as I’ve not driven one! :imp:
The same goes with any truck, as you’re going to spend 99% of your time in it, not looking at it…

Ive no doubt they will look better once they are done up a bit but the square roof ruins it for me if they kept a similar shape to the old topline it would have made it and where’s the sun visor? Don’t tell me they don’t come with one :open_mouth:

Visor is an optional extra , but then why should it be free? :open_mouth: :open_mouth: They need all the revenue they can get as I reckon this truck unless it’s priced right will not sell well.

Hauliers paid a premium for Scanias as we all know , will it continue with this model?

Heard on the grapevine that the a new R450 topline is another 30k over the current shape R450 topline.

Yup I’ve reliably heard that too (from someone who runs trucks). If true that’s insane, Scanias were already too expensive

I’ve heard that to from what I’ve heard they’ve basicly prices them selves out of the market well for the top line equivalent anyway

For the record, the fh4 was similarly priced compared to the fh3. Hence people are struggling to sell the early ones second hand

Could also be an incentive to shift the remainder of the old shape as they could be stuck with a lot of dated stock on their hands if you can buy the new model for the same money.

Regarding the looks, I can’t say I’m a fan either but I said that of the new FH when it was released and now I really like them. People don’t like change.

Square roof on the outside = More storage inside.
Personally I don`t much care about the outside appearance. (yeah, with a face made for radio, I would say that). Drivability, and interior come before any worries about the looks of the thing.

Hallelujah, at last someone else realises its a working tool, thats all it is.

It looks OK, OK?, thats all it needs to look like.

Yeah but why make an already nice looking truck look this ugly. Wouldn’t have been hard to tweaked a few things here and there to make it look a bit fresher.

Doesnt look very aerodynamic at all. Its a DAF space cab/ Dennis bin truck hybrid, just stick the rubbish compactor on the rear of that cab and you would never know the difference. Very much lower than the old R series as well, not far off coach drivers level…

It does look like a daf

I gotta admit that looks really nice…

This bit I’m on about…

The rest of it looks like ■■■■■!

Oh and for the record, guys please sort your bloody eyesight out…

This looks stylish, innovative and original…

This looks like someone has let their three year old make design decisions… With an Etch-A-Sketch!

No, this WAS stylish, innovative and original

This does at least suit the truck it’s on, whereas the DAF ones look like what they were, an update, that made the rest of the truck look old as balls.

I’ve decided I like this Scania. As long as its got a visor, colour coded bumpers and grille, and is only viewed front the front…

Think these ones actually look good and dare I say they make the other lorrys look outdated

This is most certainly the end of any Scania driver posing or looking at a reflection of their truck. Even the Onyx bin trucks look better. Peekaboos for hiding the driver from embarrassment… :grimacing:

Unsurprisingly, they got truck of the year. :unamused:

It’d be hard pressed to make the Volvo or Renault look outdated

I must admit I was one of the doubters over the new look- it looked all a bit “boxy”, however I have been fortunate enough to go see one and drive a couple this week. First the looks, what doesn’t come out in the photo is it still has many of the classic Scania lines and details, just in the name of aerodynamics and fuel saving these are far more subtle than before , they don’t show up in the photos, but in the flesh it is far more shapely than the photo’s suggest.

Inside the cab they really have made a huge change , it is done very well indeed, with a lot of thought into not only the driving position but to moving around and living in the cab.

Driving the new generation is something else, My first drive was in a 500 hp with a two trailer combo at 60 tonnes, the driving position is vastly improved over any other truck I have ever driven, the way they have designed the cab for maximum visibility from the drivers seat may have impinged on how it looks slightly, but any of us should take safety over looks every day of the week.

The new Ishift now has a brake on the layshaft- and it has made an already good gearbox, quicker and slicker than before, I tried very hard to confuse it and failed miserably.

The 730 will always be a premium/flagship- driving it shows why, it simply doesn’t work hard, it has every thing in reserve, even at 60 tonnes it never even broke sweat on my test drive.

I could go on about what they have got right with this new range, but would run out of time, so what have they got wrong would be quicker so here goes.

Errr they didn’t relalise that the shape of the cab doesn’t look good in photo’s, any one who knows me knows I am not a blinkered Scania fan boy, but sceptic that I am I cannot find much if anything to complain about the new generation, It is really is that good in the flesh.

It will catch on trust me, fuel figures alone says so. Just from a casual observer.

I guess we can read your objective review in the magazine soon? Did they fly you to the press jolly, put you in a nice hotel? Goody bag?

Going by the discussion going on concerning nmm’s Volvo D13 timing cover leak saga and expense, for one example, the choice between pushrod Scania V8 v OHC/CIH Volvo, should be a no brainer no matter how the Scania might look. :bulb:

It was a very pleasant trip to Sweden in the company of 150 or so operators/truck owners. However even if it had been a wet weekend in a B&B in Blackpool it wouldn’t have changed my opinion. I recently drove the flat floored Range T Maxi, on a wet Wednesday in North Yorkshire, I didn’t even get a cup of coffee but the report was also positive, for the simple reason that it was a bloody good well designed vehicle

As I said above I am no Fan boy of Scania or any other make ( Unless they bring back a ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ ERF  ). I have always judged my opinions of vehicles on what is presented in front of me not by other folks views. At times this has got me in a bit of bother with some manufacturers, one at least doesn’t offer me any drives at all.

I was critical of the looks of both the Range T and the Volvo new FH looks when they were launched, and I do still have some reservations about the looks of the new generation R series Scanias, However as time has passed both the Renault and Volvo have grown on me, especially once liveried and I suspect that the same may happen with the Scania range.

The fact I found that the working environment and the trucks ability to perform its designed for task to be a step change forward from Scanias current models is based solely on my experiences behind the wheel of the vehicle and comparisons with other manufacturers trucks I have driven.

Ps the goodie bag was very good indeed

The S Spec Topline painted up looks good. Fleet spec white looks ghastly though. Still, if they’re great to drive then I’d take one.
