Isuzu NKR 69EA - Car Transport/Truck Advice etc

Hey everybody - Just some general advice needed.

I am currently running a small eBay business breaking parts off car’s - and posting them off to the Mainland/UK. More specialist stuff - individually wrapped etc.

The business is growing and so is my need to be able to bring more car’s back per trip to the Mainland - I am from N.Ireland you see.

I mechanic myself/workshop/lift etc.

Has anyone any experience of the above truck - 1999 with a doubler decker bed on it. 2 car’s - hydraulic lift etc - Isuzu NKR 69EA. The truck is very fresh and looks well maintained. I will perform the usual checks on it myself.

I will go over to the mainland 5 to 6 times a year. With the above lorry pulling a trailer - 2 cars on the back and 1 on the trailer. The car’s I specialize in are very light - so no issues with payloads etc.

I have an operators license - class 1 & 2 HGV license - CPC in road haulage and my CPC driving card. I am the transport manager and will be the only driver. I also have a digi card that I will use in this machine.

Is there anything from a legal point of view I should watch for? Insurance-tax-psv , maintenance records and daily checks on the truck will all be carried out by myself. Is there anything VOSA will be concerned about that I am total one man band for this lorry.

Just trying to work out any issues before I purchase the truck?

Many thanks for any advice ’ Getting other companies to transport is difficult due to non-running car’s and other issues '. Using a 3.5tonne beavertail/truck is costing me - and the ferry price is the same for a 7.5tonner.

yeah buy anything other than a isuzu. hateful things.

Comfort? Mechanically?

would not be to sure on payload of this with this wheelbase and body front axle overload risk high I see lots of non runners in copart etc going to ni on flats you get them offloaded by forklift at haulage yard then collect at convenience there are loads of companies moving concrete etc

If you’ve got a class 1 I think I’d get a proper lorry like a Daf LF then there’s the option of pulling a 3.5t trailer with another car on.

We ran an NKR tipper on a 51 plate until September when we bought a new Isuzu Urban N75.
The old NKR was fine for local runabout work but the non existant suspension will haunt you after any kind of distance in one. If you like lifting the cab to check the oil you’ll love them.
Visibility isn’t great for such a small vehicle, big blind spots on the cab corners and tiny mirrors. The exhaust brakes are good though.

all of the above.and ive heard their handling boarders on the dangerous

don’t buy the truck, and just use car transport companies to lift and deliver.easy peasy…pm me and il give you 1 from northern Ireland that’s pound notes friendly if you wish.i use them quite often and they will lift from someones doorstep etc,all hands on guys, and none of this jobsworth pish that prevails on here. the Isuzu is dire.too small, and you will need nappies after the 1st roundabout assuming you’ve not flipped it…they look rinkydinky but are desperate bags of dung to be driving.if you want runners brought back on the cheap let me now also as im over myself lifting and driving back, but id keep my cash and just let someone elses driver have the greif of loading wrecks from copart etc.

Thanks for all of the advice,

You see I use the sailing leg of the trip to deliver stuff I cannot sell on ebay competitively against the English. At the moment I would put the stuff on a timed auction - 2 engines - 2 gearboxes - 2 differentials. It produces a fair whack of money. If I collect 3 car’s then after that it also makes the price of transport cheaper than using a outside company for backloads. But I will have a rethink.

So I should be looking at a DAF LF 45 - 7.5 tonne etc… Will start a new search.

For shipping stuff like engines/gearboxes etc, you can’t beat a pallet system. Try redhead-int.com for Palletforce. Others are available.

We run 2 of these. This is mine it’s a 7.5t and a 3.5t trailer.

Best thing I can advise is with weights. Mines weighs with me and some basic kit 4.1t so that’s left with 3.4t payload my max safe on the top is 1.5t and bottom is 2t.

The trailer weights 800kg so I can have 2.7t which is a discovery from 2004 to current as there the heaviest car on the market.

Was weighed recently by DVSA (didn’t have the trailer) had a newish golf on top at 1.3 - 1.4t and a 3 series bmw on the bottom at 1.6 - 1.7t. Came in at 6.9t nearly 7t actually.

I’ll leave it at that for now as I can go on and on as Iv spent the best part of 3 years researching vehicle weights so I can stay legal, feel free to ask any queries I’m more than happy to help.

Amazing help - Thanks guys!

Weight will not be a problem - As I only collect 2 seater roadsters - MX5 - MR2 - MGZF etc.

What about the truck in terms of reliability? Good strong drive-train? Does it let you down? I can’t afford to be stranded in the Mainland - Even if I have breakdown recovery etc.

+1, was going to say the same myself, hate the vehicles

as quakers pointed out,buy anything other than Isuzu, horrible vehicles, uncomfortable,no pulling power, generally crap vehicles

But as an owner driver I would drive a shed if it got me form A to B and back to A reliably and put £2 in the bank instead of £1

realy so you would drive a mitsubishi cantor ahead of this ! having driven both and other vehicles of similar size on both long distance and short local stuff much prefer the isuzu for its maneuverability and payload pulls all right will sit at 54 all day long fully loaded aint gonna win any trafic light grand prix but if it does what he wants from A to B then its what he wants

Looks very nice - but what about hills or accidentally parking on some chewing gum - hope it goes a lot better than our Canter. That ■■■■ thing has got to be the most hateful vehicle I have ever had the misfortune to climb into.

I wouldn’t fancy taking one with a Disco on the trailer downhill on a badly tramlined motorway when it’s windy.

I just don’t understand the point of these flimsy little trucks when a driver has got a class 2 or, in the case of towing a trailer, a class one. You might as well get a proper truck. I can understand the argument if you want to maximise the payload someone without an HGV licence can carry but otherwise there are better tools for the job.

We use ours for tight access and part loads, much better payload than any other 7.5tonner.
