Don’t see what the problem is, i’ve driven manuals & autos & never had a problem with reversing in either. Autos just have to be driven in a different way to manuals & a good driver should be able to drive both without problems
I’ve driven just about everything including yanks and back years ago loved the range change as never needed the clutch once rolling now it’s got to be I-shift as the best box I’ve used( had one on loan all last autumn) next would be the Merc but my own is a manual magnum left ■■■■■■ 6 wheeler air all round, very nice box.
Not driven a i-shift so can’t comment, but because I haul liquid tankers I’m more than happy with my 18spd roadranger, have a new truck coming with the same box mated to a 550 ■■■■■■■ isx which should be sweet .

i’m on farm delivery & you get all sorts of surface’s to drive & reverse on ,it’s horses for courses,
i’ve not had a problem with manual or auto, if you know your truck it wont make much difference what gearbox you have
Going on from what BasilBrush said re the FMX; A demo with IShift impressed our lot a couple of months ago but bad experiences with FEs mean it’ll have to be VERY good for Smiths to buy Volvo again.
on the other hand. ive just bought a honda c90 to do a 7 hour endurance race on and the 3 speed semi auot box on that is sweet. you can still do a ■■■■■ or wheelie just the same as you would on a bike with a clutch

The FE/FL aren’t PROPER Volvos though.
I know that, but my employer thought £10k per wagon cheaper than a Daf CF was more important. To be fair, I think the 57 reg Dafs and 08 reg Volvos break down as often as each other; Often.
I drive a 61plate Daf CF 460 small wheeled mid lift with AS Tronic on tipper work its not a bad gearbox you just have think a bit with it especailly off road and i did get stuck with it for the 1st time Thursday but it is still running on 100% road pattern tyres.
Before this i had a 60plate Volvo FM Globby 460 tag axle with i-Shift which is now used on landfill work as are approximatley 40 odd other Volvos nearly all i-Shifts no one can fault them really.
Would i go back to a manaul doutful really i"m happy with what i have
I drive for Travis Perkins, Got a Daf 18 ton LF with a manual 6 speed,it’s fine dosent like going into gear when is cold, but five mins up the road its fine, at our branch we also have an lf on an 07 plate with auto box its not good, can’t work out what gear it wants, very slow when you need to get across a round about, total dros!! if it had an manual box it would be a good drive. Well as good as you can get out of a daf

Disagree, i had a FL12 380 for a couple of years, superb truck pulled like a train and completely trouble free, and in wagon and drag car transporter guise could be thrown around without the slightest problem, low cab kept overall height down even with an MPV tilted over the top.
It laughed at 6" of snow too whilst all around other trucks couldn’t move, tried all sorts not to have to accept the new FM auto that replaced it, now that was disappointing.
Auto’s haven’t really taken off in the tipper sector yet.
We’ve got Daf autos and they’re crap off road. The Mans are good but then they’ve always built a good tipper.
Think a lot of Auto’s are still difficult to handle on sites, hence them being slow on the uptake. Probably will get it cracked someday, but till then the good ol’ stick shift is still the one to have.
