The-Snowman:
Jesus. Im actually starting to think you’re being serious!
Would you be interested in buying into a nice little Spanish timeshare? or how about joining me on this enterprising p̶y̶r̶a̶m̶i̶d̶ money earning scheme?
Cant mate, im tapped out. I met a guy this morning who sold me some magic beans
I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt but if he is trolling, at least ill keep him busy in here and stop him spamming the newbie section and putting off genuine newbies who appreciate you never stop learning
^^^ as Montytom says take whatever you can get to get your foot in the door, most of us would have ripped their arm off for a days paid maneuvering in the yard, and the sensible ones among us prefer an old nail on a new job even if we’ve doing the bugger for a generation, you don’t notice a fresh scratch among dozens…
montytom:
I must admit. I’m a newbie having just got a class CE job.
If I got told to wash the yards floor for a week before driving the lorries I would be greatful that in the end I’d get an opportunity as with newbies we struggle to get a chance.
As said on my post. The test reverse is nothing like I have done so far.
I ended up taking shunts and started to get Het up.
The shunting in the yard for a day would have been good practice for you.
I passed my CE in an auto but have now driven manuals and also autos with clutches that you use in reverse and pulling away.
Any chance to be sat in the seat I would grab.
Don’t worry, it’s almost definitely a troll, that has picked up on many controversial issues raised in recent posts, such as being given old trucks, being given manuals when they’ve passed on an auto, not getting the pick of the work or given shunting work and probably your post on reversing.
Ramon123:
not some skivvy poncing around shunting trailers all day.
I actually enjoy shunting, I don’t think I’d like to do it day in, day out for ever but a week here and there makes a nice change of pace, and it hones your skills a bit too.
Glory Boy:
I passed my C+E test a month ago at big cost to me and I am wondering if this treatment is normal or just because I am new. I was working in a warehouse and I had an accident which wasn’t my fault but I am starting to think that I have wasted a lot of my retraining money from the insurance getting lisenses for lorry driving. I am suffering with PTSD because of my accident which means I have flashbacks and can’t drive a stacker truck any more or until I am better. I used to look at the lorry drivers when they were tipping at my wold work and it looked like a good doss waiting for hours to be honest that is why I got my drivers lisenses for lorrys not being funny just honest. I got a job with a company and thought I was a lorry driver but obviously not the case. Yesterday was my first day and I spent ages with people explaining how to do basic stuff and what to do if I got questions and to be honest a lot of boring stuff but because I am a good worker I listened as best I could and signed where the people told me to. At the end of the day I was told by boss that I was going to be shunting trailors in the yard today to get experience not being funny but this is lorry driving not rocket science I have taken my tests I am fully qualified there was reversing as part of the test DUH! I know how to reverse in lorrys. I have phoned in sick today because I don’t want to be in the yard being told what to do and how to reverse a lorry by someone who has the same license as me it is an insult. That isn’t the end of it though when I phoned in I asked what lorry I would be getting when I came back and it is an old one. I told them I only knew how to drive automatic lorrys and they have given me an old manual one I think but I can drive a car so Im not too worried about it. The thing is I am a new driver so I have been trained on new lorrys so I think it would make sense to give the newer lorrys to newer drivers because they can work them best. Do all companies treat drivers like this or have I just got a bad boss? I am beginning to see why there is a shortage LOLOL.
P.S. They also told me I am having somebody with me for at least the first week!!!
Aye, no doubt if you’d been sent out with a load of deliveries you’d have moaned about that too!
The learning starts here, ■■■■ it up.
Glory Boy:
Thank you to the people being helpfull some of you are complete mugs though I didn’t say half the things you said I did. I meant I would be happy to shunt trailors for a RESONABLE TIME like two hours or even a morning to prove I know what I am doing. I don’t know what blindside means but that doesn’t mean I cant reverse because I can I proved it to the government and don’t really care what you think you know. So much for drivers sticking together some of you are in the real world and some of you think you are gods gift. I didn’t mean anything by it is lorry driving not rocket science I could have said plumming or something it just means once you have trained in something you know what you are doing and correct me if I am wrong but I AM TRAINED! The lorry I trained in actually said it on the front and then I took a test so don’t make it look like I am having a go at lorry driving or putting it down that’s not what I meant.
I think I am on mod preview as my last post dissappeared but it may be my connection.
Thank You The Snowman for your helpfull advice I have read another thread from a newbie who has some problems backing so I wish I had seen it first then I probably wouldn’t have made this one. I am not being a smartass I just hope when I finish work tommorrow I wont have to come here and say sorry because my trainer said my reverse was excellent. I didn’t mean just a 63 reg I just meant they should give a truck I know how to drive to me because I am used to them. Also younger people do understand tech pretty well because we have been raised up with it is all I meant. Thank you to everyone being helpful like montytom and Ramon123. I am a nice person and people like me usually. I am going to work in the morning so I will let you know how I got on. I am not a kid I am 23 and I have had loads of jobs so I don’t want people to take advantage of me is all I meant. yes I have read some posts on here and I am trying to not be taken advantage of is all I meant.
Glory Boy:
so I will come back here and eat humble pie to all of the haters if I mess up the reverse I don’t think I will be because I know I can do it.
And you want people to come back with constructive comments ■■? It’ people like you that give us newbie’s in the industry a bad name there’s nothing wrong with having a can do attitude but there is also a fine line between that and arrogance. You ve got guys on here that have been doing the job for years telling you that reversing is nothing like on your test and even some days they have a nightmare i passed my test a month ago and have been on the arctics for 2 weeks now and i ve told you it is not even remotely the same. my last set of shifts i did one of the bays in a oner had 4 days off first bay reverse this weekend i had 3 bloody shunts at it and got in a right pickle (in my deffence our yard is still being finished and we dont have white lines down yet excuses excuses i know but it makes me feel better)

Quite sad and funny at the same time.
think you have hit the nail on the head - It’s really just short of a fire extinguisher

Amateur.
I got my angles wrong at Tesco RDC Livingston one night. Cant remember how many shunts it was in total before it was lined up properly on the bay but it was well into double figures!
If I remember correctly there was a guy arrived after me, went to a bay, got tipped and was away while I was still faffing about. There may even have been a shift change at some point during the whole debackle!
When I (eventually) went into the warehouse there were 5 guys all clapping and cheering and one offered me his glasses and said “here, I think you need these more than me”

Well that was at least constructive.
I hope when you come back here tomorrow you are honest. If you screwed up and not as good as you think and messed it up, admit it and you will get tips on how to improve. This forum is unforgiving of know it all types but extremelly helpful to anyone asking for advice.
Course if you DO manage every reverse first time and your reversing is indeed perfect then fair play but dont gloat.

But thats the main point really we all have our moments and we re all still learning John Lewis RDC i have the same bay every time i go and it was nt until last night when i watched a bloke go at putting it next to me and he went about it completely different to me i thought ok that looked a shti load easier than what i do so i m going to give it a bash like that next time every days a school day!

Like I said yes I have been reading threads here and I don’t want to be the unpopular one who keeps saying yes to everything and gets treated like a doormat is all so sorry for that. I would never complain about a fire extinguisher in my cab it is obviously safety equipment so get in the real world maybe and stop taking the mickey and try to be helpful to a newbie maybe?? This goes to all of the negative people on here who seem to know it all and were never newbies themself.
Smacked a telegraph pole and brought it down. Rear ended a car and finished the week by turning the truck over. He was trained. He had a license. What he didn’t have was experience.
