I passed my C+E test a month ago at big cost to me and I am wondering if this treatment is normal or just because I am new. I was working in a warehouse and I had an accident which wasn’t my fault but I am starting to think that I have wasted a lot of my retraining money from the insurance getting lisenses for lorry driving. I am suffering with PTSD because of my accident which means I have flashbacks and can’t drive a stacker truck any more or until I am better. I used to look at the lorry drivers when they were tipping at my wold work and it looked like a good doss waiting for hours to be honest that is why I got my drivers lisenses for lorrys not being funny just honest. I got a job with a company and thought I was a lorry driver but obviously not the case. Yesterday was my first day and I spent ages with people explaining how to do basic stuff and what to do if I got questions and to be honest a lot of boring stuff but because I am a good worker I listened as best I could and signed where the people told me to. At the end of the day I was told by boss that I was going to be shunting trailors in the yard today to get experience not being funny but this is lorry driving not rocket science I have taken my tests I am fully qualified there was reversing as part of the test DUH! I know how to reverse in lorrys. I have phoned in sick today because I don’t want to be in the yard being told what to do and how to reverse a lorry by someone who has the same license as me it is an insult. That isn’t the end of it though when I phoned in I asked what lorry I would be getting when I came back and it is an old one. I told them I only knew how to drive automatic lorrys and they have given me an old manual one I think but I can drive a car so Im not too worried about it. The thing is I am a new driver so I have been trained on new lorrys so I think it would make sense to give the newer lorrys to newer drivers because they can work them best. Do all companies treat drivers like this or have I just got a bad boss? I am beginning to see why there is a shortage LOLOL.
P.S. They also told me I am having somebody with me for at least the first week!!!

Most jobs you’re chased off your arse. The job I do I get no waiting time at all.

You’re in for a shock, you’ll find out when you’re doing the shunting.

You’ve got a good one because they’re getting you on shunting first to learn how to reverse properly. The problem is you. Not to worry though, the next few weeks and months will wake you up to reality and how clueless you are real quick.
I didn’t mean a brand new lorry that would be an insult to old drivers who have worked for a long time to get where they are. I just didn’t mean a really old lorry like 55 reg with old tacho and manual gears because I am not used to them I am not being awkward. I get the point with reversing but I am not sure if you had to do the reverse move a long time ago when tests were different just wanted to make sure. Thank you conor for your reply to me it makes a lot of sense I think I may have been to quick to judge them. they are probably just trying to be helpful but I am actually a goos driver I know everybody says that tho. But honestly speaking do I need to be shown how to fill out a time sheet and how to use the phone in the lorry etc etc. ?

A whole one days experience and you think this is a good attitude to have?
Reversing for your test with all the little markers they give you means jack ■■■■ in the real world when its chucking it with rain, two wagons either side and a pile of pallets next to a brick wall 2 feet from the corner of your wagon.
Judging by this post alone, im gonna go out on a limb and call either
A - Your attitude has not impressed the boss and he wants you in the yard where he can keep an eye on you till he thinks your attitude has improved enough for him to trust you or
B - You’re oneof our previous troll friends whos wisened up to not steaming in with anti lorry driver insults with your first post and is instead posting this to warm up your account first.
Im going with B based on the “this is lorry driving not rocket science” comment since anyone with a month old license and 1 days experience wouldnt make such a comment
Is this a wind up,if its not you need to get real, you are a NOVICE just because you have paid out good money to pass your test you have no experience, and need to start at the bottom,to learn.
Nobody in their right mind is going to send you out in a costly newish motor, having only had a licence for a month.
Shunting in the yard first is quite normal in some places,to assess your ability and how much damage gets done in the time your shunting.
Its not just shunting in the yard I think that if I prove I can reverse why waste me in the yard when there are loads to be delivered?? I would be fine shunting for a while to show I know how to reverse Im not think I know they wouldn’t send me out in a new lorry without proof but a whole day messing around then sending two drivers on one lorry for a week or more doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t know everything I am a newbie but I am qualified if the government didn’t think you were good enough they wouldn’t give you a lisense there are things to learn but mostly about how customers sites work where to book in and stuff surely not basic driving things and I did actually take my test on a rainy day and did my reverse perfect.
Got to be a wind up! I only passed my class 2 on the 30th June and class 1 on the 1st August i spent a month shunting rigids between 2 RDCs although it was boring as hell it was very very useful i got to understand how rdc’s operate the big do’s and don’ts and spent all night watching artics backing on bays i ve since landed myself a really good number with a cracking company driving a brand new arctic every night shunting. Now although that first month was boring and irritating i do feel i ve learnt so much from it i dont make myself look stupid and the biggest mistake i continuously make is forgetting to take my number plate off the bloody trailer

This is not a wind up but you sound like you got a good job and boss. To be clear this is shunting trailers in a yard not eben on the road!!! I have class C and cladss C+E so I am qualified to shunt class 2 to RDC and I would do this if it meant I was getting a new artic but I would settle for like a 63 or something the new ones should go to older drivers or it would be an insult to there service. I don’t think I would forget the trailor number plate my trainer went through the whole list of picking up and dropping trailors because you have to do them on your test sometimes.
Mate your boss is terrible. As the newest driver in the yard it’s only fair that you should get the newest wagon. As for shunting that’s obviously beneath your skill level so you did right in going sick, I mean what else could you have done. Also by sending someone out with you for the week it’s insulting. Obviously once you have passed your test that means you know all there is to know. Haha

Agreed. Too deliberately antagonistic to just be an attitude problem.
