It all depends what site rules state, but if you’ve surrendered your keys theyre is a good chance that a Green light means return to office to collect your keys and paper work. The problem that you have created, by moving the vehicle prior to notification, is that as the foreman/supervisor, or who ever you handed your keys to, has assumed that as they have the keys the vehicle going to remian stationary, therefore they continued to load even though they changed the light to green. if you had returned to the office or waited for the keys to be returned to you, depending upon theyre policy, any subsequnet iccident would be liability.
I would think that this would be a serious diciplinary matter, and depending on your dicipline record could lead to your sacking. there are alot of ifs, but you want to try and be prepared. if this site is a regular customer, and has one written policy but in reality operates another policy, example- return to office on green light, but in reallity roll truck of bay to shut doors, do a pallet count or whatever reason, thats custom & practice. if this is the case get as many fellow drivers to back you up on this. it could help if you have a diciplinary hearing. hope all goes well.
I was told a number of years ago, (the imfamous 3rd hand account) that a driver either knocked his hand brake off by accident or design, the truck rolled away from the bay, which lead to the loader driving straight of the ramp and coming to serious injury. that was at Tesco Thurrock which is why they are so hot on you staying in the waiting room.
A green light means you can move. Simples.
Our depot bays have cutoff switches both inside and out. Before pulling off, we wait for green light, then check bay door closed, then switch external switch to ‘off’ - this means they can’t reopen door from inside. Only then is it ‘safe’ to pull off. Simple enough system - don’t know why more places don;t have it.
They shouldn’t have reopened bay on a green light - but still no excuse for pulling away without keys. IMO.

im 99% sure the lights work off door, door up,light on red, door down, light on greenthey had finished loading so shut door down,it went tom green, so he rolled forward enough to shut doors on trailer, but they then decided to put on a couple more pallets, lifted door to find truck a few feet of bay, they then so im told reported him for moving off bay when they had keys even though it was on a green when he move
i allways thought the green light ment you have been tipped and you are to return to the traffic and collect your keys and paper work simples!!!

at this place light changes to GREEN, you then walk to back of trailer and stick hand up between trailer and bay wall and take keys off of side of dock leveler where loader has chucked them, you pull off, park up, then walk to office and fetch paperwork,i know this isnt how it should be, but how it happens[should hang them up in wharehouse for you to collect, but just put them on side off bay, ],same as you dont hang them up when you get there, you place them on side of leveler for them to pick up

no the reason we have to sit in canteen is drivers pulling off on RED lights, with the forkie could injure himself, this driver rolled off bay on a GREEN LIGHT[green is safe to go], forkie couldnt hurt himself as door was shut, GREEN light on, unless he opened door and fell out ,surprised by fact truck wasnt there.
as i say weve been made to sit in canteens due to drivers pulling off on RED lights, not GREEN, h+s leaflets, memo on boards support my theory, green o.k to go, red not safe to go
No the reason we have to sit in a canteens is because the keys are clearly not enough as this incident has proven because this driver could have done the handbrake on a red light. There are 2 safe working practices in place here 1) a red/green light system 2) a hand your keys in system.
For example:
The door goes to green but there is still another pallet, the loader sees the keys on a hook so he reopens the door only for the driver to be pulling off without the keys!
Now there will be a 3rd safe working practice because of this incident; driver has to sit in some ■■■■■■■ portacabin from now on

your truck is on a bay on a green light,so you let it roll forward to shut the back doors, in the mean time the loader opens the bay doors to put a couple of more pallets on,but trucks a few feet away from bay as youve rolled it forward by just realesing park/brake,loader still has keys.
if the lights on a green surely its alright to roll truck forward even if you havent got keys, loader has to lift door to load truck so hed straightaway see no truck so couldnt hurt himself, unlike if you rolled it off bay on a red light
Yep!!! What an Idiot? What is so important that he must, without a set of keys pull the park brake and roll forward just to close the back doors? Numbty of the highest order!!
Shouldn’t work in an RDC again IMHO
Was it Tesco Welham Green Ady?

i may be wrong but i cant ever remember a forkie getting hurt by a driver moving off a bay on a GREEN LIGHT, but i know of a few close shaves by driver pulling off on red light, so i still say the reason we sit in rest rooms is drivers pulling off on red lights injuring forkies, not drivers pulling/rolling off bays on GREEN LIGHTgreen means go,well thats what the safety leaflets they hand me say
I’m sure there are DCs in Poland!!
Your mate if it had been at a Sainsburys dc would have undergone a breath test for that carry on!!
He can’t be trusted to sit in the cab and wait to be tipped and collect keys/p/work like the rest of us!
Sorry mate!! I got no sympathy for this fella at all
You said in your original post that they hadn’t finished loading!!

It just shows that all the modern h and s bs does’nt work.In this case you’ve got two contradictory systems that work against each other. The loaders have a red and green light system but they don’t care about it because they think that also having the keys will stop the thing being pulled away anyway.
However the drivers (this one anyway) think that the green light is all that matters and if the keys are still with the warehouse it deoes’nt matter because the truck can just be moved anyway by releasing the zb park brake.
Why not just get rid of the lights aand let the drivers keep their keys but tell them that they can’t move the truck until they’ve been instructed by the loaders that the thing has finished being loaded.Simples.
I’m not seeing what he’s done wrong. Red means no go, he’s been loaded and gets a green and he goes. Dont say ‘do not move without keys’ if that was the case we wouldn;t have a traffic light system on bays. The loader has cocked up here and give the green light to a vehicle that was not ready, evidence is the further pallets he wanted to put on. Driver now has the blame for their failings. I’d love to know specifically what he was sacked for.
FFS you dont need a set of keys to roll fwd a few feet, you’ve got the park brake in your left hand and a brake peadal under your right foot (HTF can you not be in full control engine running or not?)
as is often the case drivers bollox it up for themselves and others by there actions and i suspect the loaders dont expect the truck to move without the keys whatever the light color is … at a place i once worked/loaded at i can remember there was talk of the shunters doing the loading and tipping of our units and trailers due to h/s crap untill insurance/weight issues were pointed out, this was building products tho on flats not fridges/boxes on bays!

This is something that’s done by the fat [zb]s so they don’t get a sweat on having to climb in and out of the cab twice.
Other than that I don’t have any comment to make as I’ve done it myself and as you all know, I’m not one to judge.
All that matters is what is written on the site rules, and i reckon that most places where your keys are surrendered they expect you to return to the office before you move the vehicle.
Red lights Green lights any colour lights dont matter. when things go wrong aii that matters is whats on the site rules. you can use custum & npractice in mitigation, but the written rules hold primacy.
several off the RDC 's i go to have hydrualic wheel chocks, expensive to install but no blurred area’s. when you’re locked on thats it.
Though i dont understand why you just dont stroll to the office to get your keys and papers first. its the same mentality of those who dont wear toetectors hi-vis or hard hats were required,
If youve handed in your keys and the loader asks you to roll forward a couple of inches, say no and tell them that you need your keys to do so. the incredulaty is great, “just let your brake off drive”,“no can do need the keys”. i love being a pedant.
mickyblue:
The driver didn’t have full control of the vehicle hence why he might of got sacked for it
have to agree with mickeyblue, but could also have been to do with his work record as well.might have had warnings for other stuff
wtf does he need to roll it off the bay without keys just to save a minute or 2 in walking to the office for the keys to his wagon, becuase when he got there they’d have said 'you’ll have to wait a minute as we need to put a couple more pallets on then green light or not,he couldn’t go anywhere as they still have his keys so no health & safety issues would have arisen & he wouldn’t have got the sack.
also agree with what merc0447 put,no wonder we can’t be trusted to sit on a bay on our wagons when people do stuff like that.there will be e-mails flying all over that company now saying what happened & more stringet H&S methods will be brought in.ie undo your red line etc

I know where your coming from there Chap, we had a memo about toetectors boots last week. reminding us that they are supplied as company issue, and hsve to be warn to comply nwith H & S, why should you need reminding just where the them. A driver had gone somewhere without any, its not like you even have to draw blood to get replacements, my last pair where requested on a friday, and arrived the following wednesday.
