This is a fair point, but the more drivers take lower paid jobs the more we’re expected to work for low pay…it’s a vicious circle in which the driver always loses…and no, apart from sticking together, (won’t happen), I don’t know what the answer is either…
ok, you wanna do the stick together [zb], you want this dude to not take this job in a bid to push up wages, right do your sticking together thing and how much are you offering of you higher wages to the OP? come on, money where you mouth is. anyone who starts spouting about drivers being too thick to stick together, oh the irony
£485 - £97 per day with £21.66 night out money on top, sure it’s not the greatest, but it’s not the worst either. seriously what are people expecting in the current climate, with an abundance of drivers why do firms need to offer more? to all the fantasists, when was the last time you got to the checkout faced with a bill for £100 and said that lot is worth £105, here you go my man.

And within this rant is all the evidence you’ll ever need to see why drivers are treated like [zb] and are happy to work for crap wages…
There is nothing ‘fantasist’ [sic] about wanting a fair wage…just all the idiots that share your view that prevent it from ever being a possibility …
Anyway - good luck to the OP - and remember that there are some decent paid jobs out there, don’t become one of the drivers that is happy to work for nowt…
So we all sit at home twiddling our fingers waiting for the wages to increase while our houses are repossesed and the wife and kids starve.
You stupid prat.

It is possible to find yourself more or less in that same position anyway if it’s a choice of take minum wage or go without and it won’t be long before a lot of people find themselves in excatly that position but working for the privilege.

The economic position at any point in time dictates what the current wage structure is and nothing can be done about that. It has happened in past years and will again in the future. Economic conditions are cyclical so we will all have to be patient until it improves…which it will eventually.
Take what is on offer now and sweat it out.
Just be thankful you dont all live in Greece.
darren1000:
The money is [zb], don’t take badly paid work it only drives wages down.
so are you’ saying that you’re happy that tax payers money is spent on supporting somebody that turned down a job that they would earn circa 29k a year?

Strip away all the government bs and the actual figures show that we are already in more or less the same position as Greece. The reduction in spending power in the economy caused by low wage levels relative to prices and the trade deficit caused by importation of goods that we could be making for ourselves just means the place will sink even faster.Th only difference between us and Greece is that we’ve got a bigger boat than them which will be able to stay afloat a bit longer.
The biggest difference is that contrary to popular opinion is that we have a manufacturing base and the worlds financial centre. No comparison to Greece.

The employers seem happy enough to use taxpayers money to subsidise employees on zb wages though.

We’re like Germany then you mean. Yeah right. If we had a ‘manufacturing base’ left we wouldn’t have the massive trade deficit in manufactured goods that we have now and we wouldn’t have so many people unemployed putting even more downward pressure on wages. Our manufacturing base went years ago during the early 1980’s.As for being the world’s financial centre that’s no use except for overpaid bankers taking kick backs out of other people’s money that they’ve chucked down the drain.

i see you decided not to answer the 3 questions i posed, why was that?
that rant isn’t driver specific. i would love it if the average driver job paid 50k, it’d get me back behind the wheel of one. but i’m a realist who understands what supply and demand are and that business is about making money.
who mentioned anything about being happy to work for crap wages?
but what is a fair wage? what gives you the right to call people idiots who’s fair wage is lower than yours? what about all the people that are holding out for their fair wage but you’re spoiling it by being an idiot and going to work for you lower fair wage?
does anyone know how many hgv licence holders are in the country versus how many are using them for a job?

do tell me, how much would it cost to support the average job seeker? an now how much top up is going to be spent on an income of 29k or 25k if you don’t wont to include the nights out?

Its people like you that constantly talk this country down instead of fighting to restore it to its rightful place in the world economy. Instead of complaining how bad things are come up with some bright and concrete ideas how to improve the situation.

I think there’s more people out there having the minimum wage topped up by taxpayers cash than there are who are earning 25-29k without putting in almost two weeks work every week to get it.
Lotteea:
I have had an offer of a job and wondered if you guys thought it was a fair wage
The Job is Class 1 Tramping 4 Nights out per week approx 60 Hours
£485 per week plus £21.66 night out money all parking tolls etc paid
Mon - Fri, No weekend work or bank holidays 4 weeks holiday plus Christmas and New year off
Would appreciate some feed back thankyou
If your happy with it, and you can live on it, then its a good wage fella. If you cant get by on it, then its a carp wage. Simples fella
Ignore the scargill drivers that say they demand £25 an hour and give it the all stand together until we get it blarney, but secretly work for £6.80 for Turners ect. Its normally the same drivers that ■■■■■ about foreign drivers taking all the work whilst trying to swing the lead somewhere, whilst the foreigners are grafting like Navvy’s.
Just crack on, keep your head down, ignore all drivers RDC/Fuel pump/Cafe/Toilet gossip (Delete as applicable) and keep your eyes and ears open for something better.

That argument is fine but why the double standards when someone says zb it and decides to undercut everyone else working for less than minimum wage as an owner driver.Which is more or less the same thing as those so called ‘foreign drivers grafting like navvies’ are doing.
However the race to the bottom is just financial suicide for everyone in the end in which it’ll be those without a mortgage or families to support that will be the last survivors in the brave new zb’d up economy.

For once Carryfast is talking a bit of sense
I load do ferry Trailers and in the last three months I have only loaded two trAilers for export with manufactured goods the rest are loaded with rubbish for incineration to power stations in Holland.
A successful economy needs a good mix to be strong. Not all banking is bad we need a strong financial sector mixed with manufacturing and heavy industry agriculture and high tech stuff.

I share your anoyance truckulent, but i’m afraid I think that the time of sticking together for higher wages passed by when the east european states joined the eu, if not before.now we have to live with the fact that that level of wage is industry standard. at least its positive, in that everyone who gets back on the road is one less driver chasing another job
