I had a collection from top side of Kendal a few hours ago, after coming down the A6 from a drop at Penrith. I was heading for Leeds afterwards so had to get across Kendal to the A65. My new satnav got its first outing tonight too, so I was trying to follow the directions from that and also concentrate on the road, which, if I’m honest I found very distracting, but I digress… So I’m managing to keep one eye on the road signs and am following Skipton and M6 South signs, but it’s taking me down narrow one way streets, over tight bridges and round tight corners etc before leaving the town centre. Obviously for a man of my stature I just took it all in my stride whereas others would have failed but the route was a bit of a squeeze for a fully loaded artic and after leaving the town I kinda got the feeling that I shouldn’t have been there
. Any locals?
Into the town centre from the retail park end, under the railway bridge and turn right. Follow that along past the bus garage, over the river to the traffic lights and go up the A5284. Up the hill to the roundabout on the edge of town and turn left down the A591. Follow to the M6.
No weight limit or height limit.

That was all I needed to know I s’pose, ta.
There’s no width limit for your fat gob either.
I delivered around Kendal the other day in a 26 tonner. There is a 18t limit unless loading.
yes there is an 18t limit

jeeze that was a close call,i collected out of dale farm [ind est of a6/just north of kendal, near ford/landrover garages] at 9.30 a.m this morn, gone before you arrived, the weight limit your on about is as above 18t,its as you go over bridge, but you turn left over bridge, not right where weight limit is,so your fine.
but iwhy not use a5284[signed winamere,up to r/o,turn left then take a591/590 down to a65,i find it alot easier than going through middle of kendal[its the way its signed for trucks comming off m6 to kendal north ind est, your just going back to m6 in reverse]
got that wrong, you were gone before me,close call whatever

I don’t know where you mean. I came into town from the A6 (from the North) and it curves round to the right slightly, under a bridge and then Skipton and M6 South is sign posted as being straight on at a mini rbt I think(?) or other small junction. That then goes along a one way street between some shops, over a hump bridge, then there’s a really tight left hander over another hump bridge. Is that where you mean? Like I say, I was just following signs for the motorway and Skipton but tbh I never saw any 18t limit signs, although in my defence it was foggy as ■■■■, drizzling hard, middle of the night and the windows were still partly steamed up after loading in the rain
. I’ll have a look at that route you (and Ken) mention and see where it goes.
Alright I see where you both mean now. Is that the only way for artics to get from Kendal to the M6 south then? Going up the 5284 is frikkin miles out of your way to come back on yourself down the 591
.
HGV’s are ADVISED (hgv route) to go right after the railway bridge at the mini roundabout and follow the road up the hill to the dual carriageway. Puts about 2 miles on.
AFAIK the 18t limit is for the town centre only.

the weight limit is on the second bridge, you turn tight left over the first bridge then run along left of river then turn right back over next bridge,as your going over you then turn leftas you come off bridge,if you went over 2 nd bridge and turned right that where the 18t limit is,you can miss 2 nd bridge by going straight on and turning at next r/o if i rember right[only went that way once when 2 nd bridge was closed] then left at traffic lights,i know windimere looks longer but you cut all that messing about in kendal, plus we go through alot so less likely to upset locals, but at end of day you can go through kendal and as you turn left /not right off 2 nd bridge youll not have any problems with weight limits

thats the route im on about,up hill, hook left at r/o, and run down d/c to m6,the 18t limit is only if you turn right off 2 nd bridge,if you turn left as signe[m6 there are no weight limits[saying that ive not been through centre for a month/two],always go up hill, down d/c

no its not rob,as i say you can go straight through kendal, you dont go on 18 t road, you turn left off bridge, its right,i just find its easier using other route, once you hit r/o its d/c back to m6,kendal centre can be stop/start,not much fun if your running heavy

I know!
TBH I’m sort of loving it and hating it at the moment. I love it as I don’t have to carry a cwt of maps with me anymore but I’m hating it because I find it so distracting. I tried it with the voice off, but then I was that bust concentrating on the road that I didn’t see the junction come up on the satnav screen and promptly drove straight past it.
At this juncture I think I still prefer holding A5 size Ordnance Survey county map in one hand and steering with the other

Cheers Ady. So I didn’t actually contravene any weight limits after all then, but next time I’ll go up the 5284 and down the 591.

It takes about a month or so to get to grips with IME, it is definitely something you need to learn to use but once you do, I think you will find it a real boon.
I used to have to carry a suitcase full of maps and would often find myself spending £7 or £8 to buy a map of a city I would probably never visit again.
I still use an atlas for route planning, I only ever treat the SatNav as “advice” and I will always ignore it if my gut instinct tells me that I shouldn’t go that way.

Yes I ignored mine on several occasions, but then it is set up for car use of course. I too use my old trucker atlas to check for bridges enroute if it’s somewhere I’ve not been before. Really I only need the satnav to find the street in the area I’m delivering to. The blow by blow account on how I should turn left at the end of my street etc is not required.
