Is it worth it?

I loaded an 8w today, operated by a subbie (driver actually owns that lorry and I think 4 others); He grossed on the bridge at 31980kg. He actually got upset I didn’t OVERLOAD him by 500kgs (I saw him tare at at 12120 so I set shovel weigher for 19800). Apparently, the 500kgs was worth £2.50. Was that worth it, given the risk of being caught overweight and fined?

I have never known a weighbridge operative dare put an overweight amount on a ticket as he would be breaking the law, so he would be carting the extra for nothing anyway! A lot of weighbridge machines will not print a ticket if the weight is over I am led to understand, not like the old days when the ticket was often written out before you had even loaded!!!

Pete.

Our weighbridge man asked Vosa/Trading Standards, moreso for pickup trucks but they said it wasn’t weighbridges’ job to know everyones’ mgws. I know what you mean regarding printing the ticket; “Weightcapture” according to Bardons at Kempsford.

They may have give you bum info. The operator of the quarry/weighbridge described above should have safe procedures and practices in, even for subbys to ensure saftey and legality. Its all briefly covered here…

Thats strange! Our weighbridge guys and gal asked the same question and were told that ANY overweight trucks allowed out with a ticket and they were aiding and abetting… Even 20 kgs over, tip it off!

On top of that, they were told by the company that ANY overweight trucks allowed out with a ticket was fraudulent. Fraud equals instant dismissal…

That’s how I always understood it. Previous weighbridge man would write “overweight” on the ticket as arse-covering exercise. I can’t see how you can be done regarding pickups-although most can no longer carry 1.5t even though the builders ask for it. Since being back on the shovel though many builders ask for “just over a ton”-particularly those recently nicked by Vosa

What about something like a builders merchants or a big B&Q would staff be responsible if they handballed in cement bags to the customers request but made the vehicle overweight?

Where does it start and stop and should anyone but the driver really have responsibilty for overloading.

Mind you very annoying when boxes(edit:cardboard boxes not shipping containers) usually from China have weights printed on them that are wrong. Shippers should maybe have more real responsibilty for providing correct weights for consignments.

I took a 40 yard roro bin into a recycling centre today, full to the brim with loose plastic! Weighed in at a mighty 950kg! Hahaha

Depending on the quarry I go to, they either say it’s a bit over and ask me what I want to do, or if its a right jobs worth I have to go tip a bit off!

Or in my case, a caravan dweller with greedy boarded transit (for carrying leylandi cuttings) wants “tootunnershingle”; Am I at fault for loading it in the first place?

I don’t think the quarry operator/merchant.weighbridge operator has the same responsability for a customer as he has for say one of his employees, or someone acting for him like a subby. Could be wrong though!!

Nah it’s not your fault, not every one knows you can have an artic that can carry more than 30 tonne! It could be ‘STGO’ but the guy on the weigh bridge probably doesn’t know that.

Vosa always put the responsibility to the driver, and if he’s got a ticket, then he knows the weight and should have tipped some off.

Viridor at Ardley will not allow anyone to tip if they’re overweight, even by a stupid amount; One of our 8ws once had to get “authorization)” to tip because he was grossing at 32200; Considering he had no onboard weigher, I’d say that was a good guess on the drivers’ part.

Bloody right! I wish all drivers without weighers would take a good load like that :stuck_out_tongue:

The Tarmac quarries up here will not let anyone out overweight. They get told to tip it off.

38600 was a bit over the other day for someone at the tip
i understood that if a machine op knowingly overloads a truck , he can also be charged , very rare though i would guess

Why will they not let you tip if you are over weight though? I mean is it not then partly their responsibility for sending you away onto public roads over weight, it’s no worse than the guy on the weigh bridge who let him go at the other end!

When I did a bit of tipper work a few years ago, I seem to remember the automated weighbridges on Immingham Dock not printing a ticket if you were more than 44,250kg or something like that.

If I overload a wagon he’s not allowed off the site…simples

Perhaps not, but there again he might know that STGO rules only apply to indivisible loads  You can hardly call something you can unload a bit of with a hand shovel indivisible.

If he was only just under why didn’t he get the weigh bridge operator to just bump the weight up on the ticket that’s wot I do simples
