Ireland

wired4smoke:
I have never read as much tripe on a forum in my life.

I have lived in Northern Ireland for 15 years I have driven all over it and Europe and the Mainland.

I am yet to witness any of this outsider treatment.

I think there’s a certain type of Englishman that would like to believe his own myths therefor concoct a story along the lines of this.

No mate we don’t speak ENGLISH round here.

And the rocks where being thrown at the truck.

I couldn’t get down that road as there was a car on fire.

And any other nonsense that they can think of.

People really want to think before they post fairy tales.

I give my young ones into trouble for making up tales, seems the Elite Englishman has no qualms in making out the world is bad and there’s no place like home.

Muppets.

I have never seen any of them things happen but I have seen people throwing rocks at lorries or cars but that happens everywhere where are you from in northern ireland

I would’ve moved to Dublin except for the weather -loved the place & all of the South. Went to Belfast with a Swiss reg in the troubles & kids threw rocks at the Army truck in front of me. And when the troubles were over I slept in Belfast docks & a freestate driver driving a Dutch flower truck parked next to me because when he parked in the street of his morning delivery they set light a couple of cars in the night.
I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been North & South & these were the only probs I ever knew about.

Irish lorries I live in the big smoke of Randalstown that’s where the magic happens :unamused:

Your right

I’m trying to think of a wrost place

Ahoghill on a wet day

Or portstewart and portrush on a bank holiday

mmm. ive been reading this thread for a while now and now my 2 cents worth.
Through the 80s i drove for a company thats work involved multidrop ,ulster and the south and yup i delivered at a few places that thinking back was not very bright of me.
Overall i/we had very little trouble in ulster and that involved us out drinking most nights in some wierd places but south now that was a different kettle o fish.
lets just say that the Gardai did not like certain scottish companies and unfortunately we were one o them.
i was under my truck greasing one day waiting to load in an industrial estate (dublin E7 ■■) ,gardai drives up drags me out and helps me up a number o times pointing out that brits are not welcome .more or less the same at limerick during a vehicle stop. Crossing the border heading south usually lead to a stripout at customs(an influential person did not like us delivering certain loads to a competitor store).our bossman told us this and just tae go wi the flow.
one o my mates got a real hiding at dublin by the gardai during the hunger strikes(he spoke with a real english accent)vehicle stop…
now as someone that parked down by the docks and drank there as well it went against what i thought o the local folk. twas a real strange time for all,
wired 4smoke no tripe here thats the way it was them days ,yup had the stones bounce of the truck on both sides o the border saw buses on fire, went out for a drink wherevever we were small .big towns not a problem and that was north and south…in my experience it was certain gardai that had the problem. jimmy.

Jimbo I don’t know what to say about that. You are either the most unlucky person or this is more false dichotomy’s.

I never knew the Garda Siochana took a vigilantism stance against lone truck drivers just for not being irish. I also never knew that they where so sympathetic towards the republican cause.

I have been coming over here a lot longer than I have lived here.

Them days back then you speak of I know, your experience and mine are at opposite ends of the spectrum. I wish in some ways it was back to those days just without the innocent people getting caught up in it.

I must admit I do enjoy going over to Ireland with a lorry,i like the country north and south and I like the people but apart from some of the poor roads I find the biggest problem over there is trying to find somewhere suitable to park at the end of a shift, over the west and south west there are very few layby s and parking areas never mind service areas or truckstops, trying to find somewhere suitable to park takes a bit of forward planning.

True Calum, but there is plenty of places you just need to know where they are. Unlike the UK most biggish Hotels and restaurants on road sides allow trucks to park and things are better now.As for poor roads yes there’s a few of them, but Scotland wouldn’t be that far behind pro rata the size of the country and amount of people.

The motorway network now makes it a lot better to get about. And the grub is reasonable priced so it’s not all bad. Sure it not bad at all I would rather drive in Ireland than in England at least you can get from A to B without sitting in traffic for hours at a time.

I would rather drive in ireland as well far better motorways than england and as for back roads there not too bad when you get use to them same as Scotland I like driving on tham and yes your right the traffic isn’t as bad as England

wired 4 smoke .
nope no lies just the way it happened .im going to spell it out but i did mention at the start that certain firms from sw scotland had harder times than others in the south! ,due to drivers /owners suposedly being high up in certain sash wearing organisations and to that way off thinking i was always told that a certain firm from just south of the border were all from another section… aye bs i know but people believed that sthi .then!
certain gardai areas in the 80s were no friend to anyone from the uk.
the stripdowns occured because as i said some one high up in the irish government (the family owned a large store in the heart of Dublin ) did not want anyone delivering the high end goods to a competing store also in dublin.
The part about my friend getting a hidding from the garai occured after a minor bump between the border and dublin…he was taken to the gardai station and helped up after he fell over more than a few times,i met him after this occured on the way home :imp:
I travelled back on more than a few occasions to the north on bus trips from Stranraer in the years since with my family and loved it  ,but personally hell would freeze over before i set foot in the south ,sorry but thats how i feel after i was treated .
sorry folks for taking this thread so far of course.
jimmy.

Don’t now why they treat you like that I think people are more friendly in the south than the north but never met anyone in the garda but if there anything like the ■■■■■■■■■ up here I would try and stay away from them

As I’ve said before. If you go looking for trouble in Ireland…You’ll find it. I lived there for years and for once…Kept my opinions to myself. Made some great friends too. In fact, my kids still live there.
