Introduction to the tachograph... WITH PICS

Rog:

Looks like someone (start of tacho) has been working for 5 hours without a break. Is this legal as it is not 5 hours driving, but a mix of driving and other work, or does driving and other work count as the same thing, thus you need a 45 min break after 4.5 hours?

Cheers

Seems fine to me Newblood. A break has to be taken after 4 1/2 hours driving, you can do as much other work as you like, BUT under the WTD you have to have a break after 6 hours of any kind of work, irrespective of how long you have driven. However as the period before the break is only 5 hours, then all is well.

Well it’s one of my old charts that I scanned and ROG nicked, so I hope it’s legal

You need to have a break/breaks totalling 45 minutes after 4.5 hours of driving,

Ahh I see now.

Thanks guys. So you can do 2 hours driving, 1.5 hours other work, and then 2.5 hours of driving (totaling 6 hours), and then have a 45 min break and be 100% legal… I did not know that… I thought it was 4.5hours (no matter what you was doing) then a 45 min (or more) break must be taken.

Cheers

New Blood.

Can anyone answer this please !

I put a tacho in one that looks like a cd player, it recorded the activity but not speed or distance what was that all about ■■?

Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

I think it will do this if you put chart in second man position.

That’s correct, or you could have a 15 minute break in there somewhere to comply with the 6 hour rule, then do more work after the 4.5 hours total driving, and have a 30 minute break later, as long as you do no more than 4.5 hours driving before completing a 45 minute break your OK.

Cheers for that this may have been the case - How can you tell what is driver 1 position ■■?

Thanks in advance

On a draw type tachograph, when you open the draw you put the chart straight onto the centre positioning pole (for want of a better word), ensure it goes under the contacts at the back of the draw, to put the chart in the second man position you will need to lift a plastic flap and put the chart under it.

So if the chart was on the top immediately before closing the draw it was in the correct position, but if it was covered by a plastic flap then you had it in the second driver position.

Having said that if you had the chart in the co-driver position and no chart in the top spot, the warning light should have been illuminated to let you know that no chart was in position 1.

Where is Clarky ?

He calls tachograph’s Frisbies

Not sure what he meant any ideas ?
