Also is there anyone on here that works for them on containers that could give me an insight as to the pay and conditions?

You need to wear a shirt and tie, smart trousers and smart shoes, polished would be nice. A suit jacket is a little over the top but I would not say you shoudn’t wear one. I appreciate you are only interviewing for a drivers job but first impressions count and if you’ve dressed up it shows that you’ve made the effort.
In my opinion I’d wear a nice plain dark polo shirt, dark jeans and polished up steel toe capped boots. Been to interviews in a tie before (it was a coach driving job) and felt a right tool because the people interviewing me were in polos and jeans. You can look perfectly smart and presentable without a shirt and tie.
What planet are you lot on? Shirt and tie for a trucking job? Don’t be so [zb] ridiculous.
Smart casual is what you want. If it was my haulage company and a driver came to the interview dressed in a shirt and tie I would NOT give him the job just for that reason. [zb] me, what happened to common sense.
I think it depends on who is interviewing you and what the interview involves. I have interviewed for companies where it has been a member of HR staff and a manager that have had nothing to do with driving at this kind of interview I have always worn shirt and tie. Other interviews I have had where it has been people from the transport department who have interviewed me, for this kind of interview I have gone smart casual. I always find it worth ringing and asking whether or not a driving assessment is done at the interview stage and if this is the case I have worn trousers/ shirts that I am not too bothered about getting grease on, I always take a hi-vis and gloves and always wear safety shoes/boots. At the interview relax as much as possible and just be yourself as they will have interviewed people in the past so will see through any exaggerations (forgive spelling) etc. Always have a question or two to ask as this shows that you are interested and try to read up about the company.
Turn up in your work clobber, your either a smartly dressed worker or a scruffy oik, for the past 4 years ive had a few interviews and never once dressed out of work clothes, been offered most of the jobs too.
I will never wear a shirt n tie for an interview, weddings n funerals, if they are lucky.
Thanks for all the replies guys think i will go in shirt and tie.
I phoned up today to confirm a time for the interview and to give the chap my email details so he could email me the address for the interview.
I also asked if it would be just an interview or would it an driving assesment aswell, and the chap said that it would be just an interview, but if i could attend an assesment thursday i could be inducted on friday and start monday if all went well.
So fingers crossed i could be in a new job next week, or should i say IN A JOB, After the company i worked for went pop today and i spent all afternoon clearing my gear from the truck, and to make it worse i haven’t been payed for 2 weeks and i doesn’t look like i will be payed next friday for the 70hrs work and 5 nights i’ve been out this week, plus the 70 plus quid i have spent on parking out of my own cash!!

cheers for that gramps who is it you work for then, Harris Transport by any chance?
I haven’t been given any details on wage yet but from what the chap has told me over the phone they have got positions on nights days and tramping.
I just want to work for a firm that you know everything is gonna be done half right and not a firm that expects you to fuel up your own lorry becuase the fuel cards have had a stop on them!
im on one stop mate ,good wage but 3 to 4 am starts and bloody hard work some days.
i know a bloke in the office at Harris’s tho and hes told me to give him a ring if i need a job ,used to work with him at Armstrongs a few years ago ,heard 1 or 2 story’s about them tho ,some good some bad.
think il only ever ring him if im out of work.
Good luck with the interview, you wanna ask him about all the different positions ,tramping ,nights and days ,just to let him think youre weighing up all the options and not putting all your eggs in one basket so to speak.
even if you just want one of them.
best of luck anyhow ,hope to read later in the week some good news.
mick.
