just go and get an international driving permit from the post office.
i’ve just got one, all of £5.50. and you can drive whatever category vehicle that it states, in any country on the list.
some countries will exchange your international permit for a national licence, others will accept it as it is, and others want both your international permit, and EU licence.
no need to take a test.

no mate, i got it yesterday in preston.
i asked the girl to make sure it covered me for HGV’s.
she said it’s ok you can drive any vehicle on your licence.
the categories are different than our UK licences. they come with all categories included, then they delete the ones that don’t apply to you. so according to my international permit. i can drive not just HGV’s, but coaches with trailers, which arn’t on my UK licence.

Wouldn’t entitle you to drive those vehicles for work purposes though. An International Driving Permit is only for driving private vehicles.

I’ve had dozens of them, I usually used to have three or four on me in Russia as the Police had a tendency to confiscate them, expecting that you would remain where you were until they brought it back. They’ve always been a bit of a Mickey Mouse document.

Exactly, only really to provide a translation of the licence and show what categories you are entitled to drive to those pesky folk who don’t understand English, even when spoken very loudly at them. Even more of a pointless document these days than they were in the past.

is driving in a competition for a TV series classed as work?
it just that they all used international driving permits.

that’s why i got one. nearly had my licence confiscated twice last year. managed to talk my way out of it.

No you cannot 
Recognised internationally, an IDP normally allows the holder to drive a private motor vehicle when accompanied by a valid UK driving licence. (See also important note 2 below)

Nothing wrong with an IDP. I did 11 months on one, it was ever so slightly illegal but as not many asked to see it, it wasn’t tested whether it would work in anger.
One advantage of them was that they had a photo of the holder unlike a British licence.
