So, you depart with a fresh 4.5 hr drive period, and your planning to stop at a particular place for a shower which can normally be covered in less than 4hrs and 20 mins, but you get held up a couple of times en-route would you push on to the original destination which would put you on 4 hrs 36 mins or stop in a layby knowing full well if you did you wouldn’t be able to stop again to due to time restraints, and end up not having a shower.
You’re as bad as my mates stop at a services on 2.5 hrs or 3.75 hrs
why go to the limit?
one particular friend of mine
missed beconsfield svcs on 3.75 hrs and sat on the NCP ( M25 ) for three hours because he never LISTENED!
however, on arrival at weybridge he had 7.25 hrs driving
Can you “somehow” justify/explain a delay between said layby and the place with the shower giving you the 6 mins extra?

I could somehow yes, lol.
Humm yh tricky one technically if theres a safe place to stop before your 4.5 you should be stopping there regardless of the facilities… but also it depends on the value and security of your load could it be deemed not safe to stop in the layby… if I really wanted the shower but I could stop in the layby I would put on the tacho no safe place to stop to explain the 6 mins and if anyone said anything about the layby I would just say there was no room in there there were already lorries there having breaks or cars parked up whatever just to justify you missing it
Go for it, with this hot weather a shower is a must.
If my card was clean and i needed the shower bad i would press on, if there were already some naughtys on my card though it would be a strip wash in the sunshine.
I wouldn’t. Simply because I’d be worried I would crash and wipe out a family during that 6 minutes. After all I’d be extremely fatigued after 4 hours 30 minutes.
Carry On for a shower, 6 minutes isn’t hurting anyone and is unlikely to be even mentioned.
Jesus wept, I wouldn’t worry about it. The regs are there to prevent nut jobs driving knackered, not to stop a poor hard working bloke getting a shower & some decent snap over the sake of 15 minutes.

VOSA prefer you to park “off-road” overnight rather than parking in a lay-by.
They would overlook your 6 minutes “over-drive” (VOSA quoted me 20 minutes)
on the grounds of road safety, provided that “over-drives” do not form a regular
pattern on your driving record.
MAKE SURE you get a print out and acknowledge the “over-drive.”

I would do same as you mate, but do a print out as soon as I stopped, and as long as the distance from starting point to shower was within reasonable distance as described in OP, then I see nothing wrong, after all a refreshed driver going back onto the road is surely what the authorities would wish to happen.

Yes I might consider if I’d already bent the rules in the prevous few weeks, but then still head for the shower
I wouldn’t even think about it, nor would I do a print out. Not as if its every week, running bent and going over your time are two completely different things.

Ok, running bent is a different kettle off fish, to have I bent the rules recently, but even with a printout, which you ought to do, running over your time by 6 mins is bending the rules, no matter how you word it or for whatever reason, and without a printout to explain your mitigating circustances then you might just aswell be running bent.
It isnt tomorrow when you get a tug and asked to explain yourself, its in a nomths time, when you cant remember why you went over your time that it will come back to bite you
If you were pushed for time why didn’t you stop somewhere enroute for a shower then push on.

6 minutes is indeed not much but my advice is to always do a print out for any infringements no matter how small. Its just good practice and VOSA do like to see them when stopped.

Are you talking about parking up for the night or just a 45 ■■, if its just a 45, park in the layby, start again then stop for a shower later on, or stop 6 mins later, what’s a shower 15 mins…
[parking up for the night, definitely go over.
Vosa guidelines says they’ll generally allow up to 15 minutes going over before they’ll bust ya, so long as it’s not a regular thing. So if you’re a good boy, crack on, do a print out and get a shower

I got between bury and Ipswich when the 15 min warning flashed up running in to Felixstowe, and as has happened a few times I’ve stopped short and had the break before carrying on and try to get one on the way out, but it rarely happens due to delays on the terminal you either get stuck on there for the night or end up stuck in the middle of nowhere.
