Is it a legal requirement?

Is it a legal requirement?

Yes.

Is it a legal requirement?

only if your 3 metres or above

You after a 2nd opinion ■■

Answers still YES

Does it have to be one of those fancy jobbies or can it be scrawled on the dash in Tipp-Ex?

and it must show the correct height or it could cost you 30 quid

Which isnt much when you consider a hi roof Sprinter Van is 2700mm

If its a fixed body riged you can write the height on the dash on a sticker what not but you need one if its a tractor unit.

There are no legal specifications for an in-cab height indicator, so it falls down to the “test of reasonableness”. What would “the man on the Clapham omnibus” think about it?

In a rigid-bodied vehicle, the height marked on the dashboard with Tippex or a permanent marker would probably be reasonable, in an articulated vehicle where you frequently tow trailers of differing heights it probably wouldn’t be, although this is one of those laws which is never enforced until the day you have a height-related collision.

Thanks for The info guys, sorry for the double post. Clever iPhone, tired dumb lorry driver!

It is a tractor unit, I thought it should have a height indicator, thanks for clearing that up guys and sorry for the double post!

I do know the height of it by the way,
Depending on how much it’s bouncing!

It can if you never change trailers, or drive a rigid van spose

It can’t be in metric only - either feet/inches or feet/inches and metric. If you change between trailers and the difference in the heights doesn’t exceed 150mm then you can standardise on the highest dimension.

Height indication must be in
feet and inches (can also be
in metres) in numbers at least
40mm tall

no mention of where they should be fitted in the cab which is probaly why i have seen them fitted under the bunk, behind the drivers seat at floor level, in the passenger footwell and in the side locker.
ofcourse, common sense would tell you to fit it where the driver can see it when hes driving but he was probally on holiday when those ones were fitted

Is a height indicactor needed for a rigid flat where the cab is 2.9m which is the highest point ,and the load rarely is above 3 metres ?

It would only be a legal requirement on those “rare” occasions when the vehicle+load was above 3 metres.

The height indicator notice is required to be fitted in the cab in a position where it can be read by the driver from his normal driving position.

Cheers .

Ok what if it reads a couple of inches over the actual height?
