The “left seems happy” because the Labour party arn’t sure if left policies win enough votes so they try to stay in “center” ground.
I can’t see many dying because of the economic downturn - how is that going to kill anything like what covid killed? I suppose some will lose their health with the stress and misery of poverty.

Kind of hesitant to get involved in this stuff lol. Considering my username one might hazard a guess at what I did for a little while albeit not in anything big…just a temp-controlled merc sprinter.
Anyway, John Redwood spelled out the small print on BBC QT just last night. “We never promised to bring the numbers down during the referendum…Well I didn’t anyway”. surely that is pretty important and on topic. they are saying many people who wanted LOWER immigration didn’t listen properly or didn’t read the small print. He also explained he is untroubled by the “temporary” increase in legal counted immigration.
Other people on the panel who supported brexit did not object to this reasoning either. So those who thought it was about reducing numbers never understood that THAT wasn’t on the table. It still isn’t no matter which colour get in to number 10.
Other points worth remembering - Boris not only got an 80 seat majority, he purged his parliamentary party of ANYONE who disagreed with Brexit, they lost the whip. Fine it happens now to Labour MP’s or those who wish to run…if they don’t tow Starmers line they are shown the door. He had EVERYTHING he could have wished for with regard to getting stuff on the statute books. Getting votes through. Golly gosh he even used things that were NOT at his disposal such as lying to the Queen and proroguing parliament.
So it feels a tiny bit disingenuous to imply that it was because the HOC is full/was full of people who wanted Brexit thwarted. They literally ran on that ticket in 2019.
We are now at the point where neither party wish to rejoin the EU. So just like neither party want to reduce immigration, Neither now wish to rejoin any part of the EU…this week anyway.
The vote is done. it is now history. What was there before won’t ever return as we simply couldn’t get the same deal and anything less favorable would never sell to the public in my lifetime anyway.
Immigration is here to stay and there isn’t a single party capable of getting into power that are offering to change that any time soon.
Maybe if the country could have a sensible debate about 1. What we need. 2. What we can afford. The pro’s and cons of the current immigration numbers and systems.
Nurses have been on the shortlist for 15 years. That is simply government policy. It “must” work out cheaper to poach already trained nurses from poorer countries than train our own. It kind of ■■■■■ as that means we can’t really moan too much if/when our trained pros in other fields wander off abroad with their skills in search of a higher standard of living.
Maybe a way around it is to actually acknowledge that we need more people to service what is here. Governments can make the conditions for this to happen natively if they wish. That would mean stopping those televisual fests showing/shaming people with 20 kids and 2 council houses…or we keep that and just import. As we have seen in the way the country is right now you can’t simply just pull up the ramp and say ok we will make do with the numbers we have. There are shortages of staff almost everywhere and it means you and I can’t get timely access to “stuff” from a Latte to a GP appointment…record low unemployment remember so it’s not as if everyone is just idling at home refusing to work for the NHS/Schools/costa Coffee etc. It’s simply there are not enough people trained in those jobs and the ones that are working apparently don’t fancy retraining to become teachers/nurses or whatever.
Oh well I have had my wee dip into this thread and topic surrounding it. I don’t envisage me getting involved in any back and forth debate unless someone wants me to clarify something I wrote, I have zero wish to change anyone’s mind, especially randoms on the internet lol. we are all just letters and numbers on here and any other place online.
