If you were an owner driver

…what unit would you have?
I’d have a Renault T Range… :open_mouth:

The one I drive at the moment but wound up to 56mph instead of 54/55 it is now
I’m quite happy with the MAN TGXXL 500 2018 plt Astronic box I drive at work
Only thing I would add is stand alone air con for when I’m parked up

I’d have a Foden and save the money I don’t spend on the modern pile of poop

Iveco Eurotech 340 with an Eaton ts

Wouldn’t want any of these old piles of poop like a Foden ( ), but a nice Volvo 500 would do me. No idea on model types, but the 18 plate ones they had at Great Bear, Kegworth were sooo nice.

As for a Foden, theres one sat at one of our depots, but I get the impression you’d spend more fixing it than buying a new piece of poop.

They say if you slice Punchy Dan up each slice would have the word Foden running through it [emoji23][emoji23]

Scania longline for sure. It would mean only taking small containers or urban trailers, but still. Either that or they could change the bloody road regulations to accommodate them and everyone could have a decent cab like the yanks

I Previously ran a Volvo which was pretty good and did well enough for me but when I wanted to replace it in 2018 (mostly because the warranty was due to to run out) I found the attitude of the local Volvo dealer frustrating.
It seemed to me that they really only wanted to sell me a stock truck from their showroom or incoming inventory. They had some nice spec tractor units for sure but not one with exactly what I wanted so it seemed like I would have to compromise to an extent.
The Peterbilt dealer was a total different story. Those people were very enthusiastic to specify and build a truck to complete custom specs.
I sat down with the sales guy and spent hours choosing engine, gearbox, suspension and every component on the whole chassis from front to back. Every detail of the interior from the actual items and extras to the materials and colours.
It took four months from the first signing of the deal to actually being delivered and I have got to say the whole thing was a very satisfying experience. Just got to finish paying off the finance now. L0l.

This is what’s needed in the U.K.

If I was able to afford one, my choice would either be a Scania Blue Stream or Black Amber with V8. I love the colour schemes on those two versions.

I guess that being both an owner of a small fleet, and also driving regularly, I hope my team can give their views on what they drive. That’s why I have Mercedes Titan 5160, Scania S730, MAN OaF 40.700 and Volvo Fh16.700 on my fleet.

V10 man road haus as long as someone is fueling up the thing !

What would I have?
An epiphany moment :bulb: …then flog it, and more likely go on to make similar money as an employed driver…and maybe increase my life expectancy by 10 yrs with zero stress.
You’re welcome. :sunglasses:

Scania 164, same as I drive now. Probably a twin wheel tag instead of a four legger though.

No tick to pay off, outpull most modern jellies, 9+ to the gallon and last forever.

I’m not convinced by these V8s I did think I’d like one but I met another owner driver recently with a 730 although admittedly double drive with a Large crane on can go down to 3 mpg :open_mouth:

Must have been a Euro 5? They’re known for pretty poor mileage. I’ve had a Euro 6 730 before, mostly heavy fridge work and returning 8.5. I think the older V8s are miles better than the new Euro 6 ones, pull better and the mpg is better. Maybe not compared to the new generation, I know guys getting double figures from the 650.

An employee. You can then get the cheapest thing to run on the market in the knowledge you don’t have to live with it. Find some young 20 year old, tell him there’s a couple of grand he can spend on shiny bits to bolt to it and you’ll save a packet on your wage bill too. I’d not worry about the fact they’re barely out of their teens as there’s quite a few young drivers who can drive a whole lot better than some of the old timers about to hit retirement.
