If This Ain't a Positive Fit I Don't Know What Is

Its only a matter of time before some DVSA dimwit opens a load of woodchip or sawdust.

Yes! Do it, do it.

This was done on Hull Docks with an IBC box, plastic granules all over the shop and they worry about plastic in the oceans.

No legal obligation to to secure a load to withstand a rollover/crash or be righted with the load in place only normal forces experienced in cornering or emergency stops or situations that could be reasonably expected on the public highway.

The only thing that may contain the load for recovery is an ISO box, but that is classed as “the load”

When we loaded tyres, we tightened the curtains, threw 3 straps over the roof before loading, you cannot secure tyres and you can’t get a full load in a box or fridge, anyway who wants unsweetened rubber and chemicals in a meat or veg fridge?

.

When you see, some of the stuff that gets loaded into fridge boxes, a few tyres is nothing, just wash it out, pot of coffee granules, re-load crack on.

The offending lorry was not pulled over by DVSA , it was the police who have a CVU or Commercial Vehicle Unit who noticed a bulge and thought the load had shifted.
CPMG means Central Police Motorway Group.
I was stopped by the CVU and they were good as gold with me , if you give them Billy big balls attitude, expect to be delayed for hours when they knock off for a tea break.
I had no fine, just a warning.
I was pulled in to the Sandbach check point , which is the depot when you exit the MSA.

you cannot secure tyres

Tyres stacked flat on top of each other and banded to pallet. Each pallet with corner edge protectors on, ratchet strap thrown over each stack.

You absolutely can secure tyres but it would mean not being able to carry anywhere near as many.

You can in a step frame box obviously, we used to load them out of Michy Dundee all the time on Brits.
Other occasions when loading same in a Euroliner we did it just as you say.
So what in their infinite wisdom is their take on securing loads of tyres in curtainsiders ?
I’d love to know that one,… you can guarantee it will have no connection to reality. :unamused:
As I said earlier, all this bullcrap needs sorted with a strong injection of common sense.

The Mega trailers we used had half round aluminium poles stitched within the curtains, the straps ran through the poles, if we loaded a normal trailer we built a trellis with lengths of timber, always handy for firewood afterwards, it was only really necessary on the tunnel as they got a bit precious if we were bulging.

What exactly are those ratchets over the roof good for? Stopping the roof from blowing away??
Similar to pallets with bagged peat on a flat bed, with a ratchet strap over each pallet. Its just window dressing.

If that was a load bearing curtain, there wouldn’t be an issue. Once again, the employer sends a driver out without the proper equipment knowing that if the driver refuses, they’ll simply get another one.

It seems the employer fines are so low, it’s cheaper to get pulled than to buy proper trailers.

What’s a proper trailer look like?

Load bearing curtains would be a start. Internal nets attached to the roof would stop anything falling off onto the driver whilst opening the curtains.

Trouble is, for every driver who refuses to take an unacceptable load, there are 20 others who will (and will whine when they get caught).
