I really hope that was a joke. Otherwise, you’d better hope we don’t meet. There is nothing worse than [zb] who say that, while taking 10 minutes to get to 26 mph then slowing down for a corner. In case you hadn’t noticed, we “drive” for a living. If you want to park up, go ahead. Don’t [zb] me about.

No joke, it’s the law. I have no intention of losing my licence and therefore my way of making a living just so that you can.
As I have said before, 40mph on A roads is the law, those of you who ‘think’ you are above it should take a reality check.
Its getting tougher out there, more camera vans hiding up.
Question for the tear arses, WHY?
Does your boss pay you more to get from A - B 10 minutes quicker, will your boss pay all your fines and keep you employed on full wages when you lose the license, one day when it all goes wrong and the wagon is in a ditch, will your boss be beaming with pride at what you acheived…

No, thought not.
YES.
the quicker i get my work done, the better. i get paid the same whatever i do, so if i get my work done in 14 hours instead of 15, i get more time off. and think of the customers. without the goods that we deliver, they go out of business, so if you are late, you cost the ecconomy dearly.

Begs that question again -
should it be law to pay drivers by the hour so this sort of temptation does not occur

Those on hourly rate regularly work longer hours than they ought too. i often say to the boss of a groupage company that it’s his own fault that i’m waiting so long for a pallet, because he pays by the hour. an hourly paid driver will take 15 hours to do a 10 hour job.
how often do you come across “i don’t care, i’m paid by the hour” on here?
there are many laws that need ignoring in this country, and the 40mph limit is one of them. we should use our own professional judgement.
i may judge most of the a684 at 20 to 25mph. but most of the a75 i would rate at 60mph, however some areas you wouldn’t go over 30mph.
limeyphil:

Or
“I don’t get stressed, i’m paid by the hour”
But I do agree with you that there are some hourly paid that take the [ZB] which spoils it for the rest but it could be said that some salary paid drivers are always in a rush and [ZB] to anyone in their way
if i’m plodding across the a75 at 55-60mph and i come across someone doing 40mph, then that is fine by me. but if he speeds up on a dual carrigeway making it a much slower overtake for me, then i will think the guy is a total [zb]. i have come off the boat at cairnryan and pulled over for 15 to 20 minutes, this will be due to having an abnormal load or very heavy load or even a really crap truck that wouldn’t pull your tooth out. if people just thought of others before sitting there holding everyone up thinking he’s so perfect, yet looking like a complete [zb].

I’m sorry but I am with smoker here, if the speed limit is 40 (and I feel it is safe to) I would like to do 40…not ■■■■ about at 30/35 because some muppet is hanging the job out/admiring the scenery/believes their nissan micra only has 2 gears etc
(Note - I am not suggesting tramper is any of the above)
I do think our speed limit on A roads should be raised to 50, and car bought down from 60 to 50, level playing field across the board then.
Will never happen all the time the goverment are claiming cash from the motorists who speed, this way they know the frilly curtain brigade and the salareid ones will be screwing the job out to get home, Kerching £60 and 3 points thank you kindly… Cars get held up, over take, speed up to ‘make’ up time, whoops, Kerching £60 and 3 points please, thank you…
I set me cruise at 42 on A roads, if I get a wagon climbing over me back doors, the speed drops to 40, tough.

i can see the sense in what you’re saying, but if you look what happens in the roadworks, 50mph limit, cars do 46mph.
your idea is good in theory but i can’t see it working. it should be 60mph for cars, and 55mph for trucks, that way we will end up doing the same. the only way that the limit for cars will be lowered is if the car drivers abide by the existing limit 100%, then they won’t be making any money, so it will be changed to increase profits.
A lot of A roads cant sustain a truck at 56mph, so your speed will flutuate far too much, ie slowing to 30 for bends depending of course on what you are carrying, therefore a truck with a double stack of glass bottles if obviously going to take it a lot more carefully than a wagon pulling say a full load of cardboard, and of couse with the variables in speeds, there is the economy of the fuel, esp as more C’s are really pushing fuel efficient driving…
and to be honest a truck driven at 40 - 43 mph smoothly around the bends etc, does the job in pretty much time as the guy doing 45 -50 and has to keep hitting the brakes at bends, and 40 - 43 will also be saving fuel, thus increased profits.
I used to tear everywhere, seen the light now, and get a more relaxed journey, and enjoy the job a bit more now…
Of course the blanket 40mph speed limit is ridiculous, as are most of our limits, which were introduced when the Austin A30 was the height of technology, but whilst they are still in force, you will find me on or more likely just under those speeds. As others have said, there is rarely any benefit to traveling faster, infact it can be quite detremental to the bank ballance in a very short time… and the fuel economy figures can be dramatically increased by smooth operation.
tofer:
The problem was the car drivers were seeing a lorry, pulling out for the overtake and then getting caught out when they realised there was a tractor pulling a huge trailer in front of it.
I’ll bet you know what I am about to ask…
… why didn’t you leave a large gap between your truck and the tractor so the little darlings could play leap-frog
It started out as my usual safe stopping distance but once I had a couple of cars in it and one idiot tried to go the whole hog and nearly got wiped out by a truck going the other way I took the oppurtunity to pull over and let them have their accident without me.
I don’t want to dwell in the past but motorists used to drive for the common good to keep things moveing safely, now it seems they are taking on a ‘me first’ attitued and it’s bad driveing habits. People drive like this where i live, getting past the other vehicle is all they care about but don’t really gain anything in the end.
Drivers at my place are paid on the hour, and still speed.
I can’t see the point myself.
And all the drivers on here that boast about “keeping her lit” what speed do you do when youv’e plod on the back door.
40MPH cos thats the law,and you will be running like a good little boy until hes gone.
Trolly dollys as they are called, get all the flack from fly by night drivers that are only jealous because they are running bent, having to speed and getting paid peanuts, while some firms don’t expect the law to be broken and pay a decent wage.
So as the speed limit is 40mph on A roads, let the ones that want to keep a clean licence get on with the job.Speeding will just fet someone killed.Ease of if someone is slower than you,and enjoy the ride.
Olog Hai:
i just love it. an irish motor pulling a norfolk line fridge and its driver is lecturing on reckless and inconsiderate driving.
some guys out there reeeeeealy need to calm down and chill out a bit.
Totally agree Olog! I’ve yet to come across a Manfreight driver (whether he’s irish or not!) that doesn’t tailgate 2ft up the arse of all other road users!
You should spend less time polishing your shiny red trucks and learn how to drive them.
hahaha boy your lieing you would never see a manfreight up your ■■■ we would be past you in a flash haha your some lier boy
ROG:
‘…How many truckers leave that ‘leap-frog’ gap when there is no chance of an overtake?..’
Yep, I regularly get mindful & try to do the two second thing …my other input being that for an LGV to do >45mph+ takes an overtaking car (NB. Usually restricted to the few with a modicum of ability) longer to pass.
So either way it’s a hazard - whether it’s those in LGVs who lose it in their heeds by being denied a pass or Joe Pubic [no, it aint a typo] who isn’t competent to pass & is thus numpty incapable of ‘making good progress’.
Meanwhile, better roadcraft & motoring sense for Joe Pubic is amongst my umpteen solutions - a few of which don’t involve losing my rag…
What i can’t fathom out is why does Joe Public sit behind for miles on end through several perfectly safe, road clear for miles, overtaking opportunities, & then decide to go just when its not safe/no vision?
