idiot

listening to radio 2 earlier and all day i have been hearing about lorries being blown over because of the severe weather,i could not believe some idiot sent an e mail or text to jeremy vine about the lorries going over,he said within a few miles of him trying to get to where he was going he came across 2 lorries blown over,he then quite unbelievebly said they must have been going too fast and then said and i quote, come on guys, unquote, what an absolute plank, it never occurred to this berk that the wind might have done it,especially as a lorry driver died from his vehicle overturning, maybe other drivers heard him on the radio

Some of them probably were going to fast for the conditions! It’s not as if all drivers drive to the conditions is it! To many heroes it there now that have to be flat out on cruise control without a care in the world, well until they plough into something!

agreed but with so many lorries going over today it never crossed his mind that it may have been the severe weather

Maybe not such a plank! The high winds were forecast so why take the risk? Employers should not send highsided vehicles out when the forecast is bad.
No load is worth risking human lives.

agreed again but you know what these transport bosses are like

I heard it as well somebody in thier car reckon they were on the motorway doing 30 mph and having a go at the trucks that were overtaking them.
Jeremy Vine decided that must be that truck drivers were going to fast, but neither he or I were there so really how can we judge how fast we’re suitable for the conditions?

Do we take the word of some random car driver whose competence and experience we have no idea of?

But you are right Albion there must come a point that the driver says it too dangerous, and should be backed up by their boss and by others in the supply chain, which includes customers, as in is you load really worth somebody’s life and not neccersarly the person driving the truck? And I’ve already posted something pretty similar on another thread.

This is why all new car drivers should drive an artic on private land to see what it is like with blinspots.
Let them do blind side reverses.
It should be in the car test.Transport is the only industry that Joe Public has no idea about but all of a sudden they are instant experts on how it should be in their Utopian artificial bubble world and banning those noisy polluting thundering killer monster juggernauts. How sad they are.
They do not say ban pilots.Ban airliners on their holidays.
Ban the oil rigs.
Ban the milk float for waking me up with its noisy engine and breaking the speed limit.
Nimbies should be shot at dawn or donate their kids inheritance to a charity.

Well we don’t, but If someone’s looking for sensationalism for a radio show they’re presenting that’s exactly what they do.

Why let facts stand in the way of a good story

Toby that is never ever going to happen and it would not make a blind bit of difference even if it did.
You are correct that Mr Average has no idea about the transport industry and why should he or she have to take any interest?
It is the responsibilty of the LGV driver to watch their blindspots and reverse where ever they need.Nothing to do with any car driver.
Of course Mr Average is going to get upset if he feels 30 or 40mph is fast enough for the windy conditions and a lorry overtakes them because they might feel it may get blown over on them. You would feel exactly the same in their position.
What needs to happen is some sort of ban on highsided vehicles when high winds are forecast.
Very hard to implement but something needs to be done before more lose their lives because of money money money.

That argument is all well and good but I had a truck loaded with someones possesions who wants to move from Elgin to the New Forest. I spoke to my driver this morning who a) wants to get home after being away for nearly 2 weeks and b) doesn’t want to delay his client for any longer than he has to. I said to him that if he felt it was safe than carry on but if at any time he felt it unsafe then park it.

He made it safely if not slowly to Lymm and would have carried on further had the M6 not been shut. I trust his judgement and if he had said it was unsafe I wouldnt have questioned it.

I cant imagine the majority of trampers would have wanted to park up all day if all employers had your train of thought!

That is why a ban has to be implemented for all employers and drivers. Some employers are not capable of making the correct decision and some drivers are not capable either. No driver is capable of knowing when a sudden gust could hit him.
You will always get the clown that thinks he knows better.
I believe there was a driver today who ignored signs not to cross a bridge and got blown over.Says it all really.
Now what were you saying?

When the wind speed reaches a certain speed the container port cranes shut down and do not come back to work until it is safe.
They have fatalities in the past where they have been blown over.

Had a Online Rocksteady Double Decker come past me on the A50, west bound, this morning, on the limiter !!! (I was taking it steady like most of the other Tautliners)
I thought ‘Wow, what a Hero’
Would be Funny as ‘F’ if he had an ‘Incident’ in the wind.
First thing the Old Bill would look at, would be the Tacho !

Now what were you saying?

Despite what you might want it will never happen! How can you put limitations on something that is constantly moving in different degrees of force and virtually unpoliceable?

True, nobody knows when a sudden gust will hit them but common sense must be used! If someone crosses a bridge after ignoring signs to the contrary, thats not stupidity…its natural selection

Ve no idea why anyone listens to that moronic show. Top tip, stick Radio 4 on instead, much more interesting and contains facts no sensationalism

The questions are who makes the decsision to stop all trucks moving in a certain aea?
What wind speed is that decisions made at?

Do you make it a blanket ban or only for a certain types of trucks depending on wind speed?

What happens when a truck gets blown over when its been decided it wasn’t strong enough to ban truck?

I have nothing but radio 4 on all day at work. Its brilliant!

What? Are you being serious? You are right it may not happen but if a ban was in place because of high winds I think the police might just notice a lorry in amongst all the cars!

And how do you use common sense as you are suddenly being blown over? Jeez…ignoring a sign is not stupidity in your book…Oh dear.

Top speed of 146 mph today the wind! :sunglasses: did you go for it hero? :unamused: who’s bothered? :sunglasses: if it’s unsafe to go any further, THE DRIVER WILL MAKE THAT DECISION! Endex :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:
