Last week my truck was in for an mot…
This morning it was fully loaded with 16 drops along with a 1 ton of concrete block…I’m no expert but I guess the concrete block was needed for the mot…
So it took 40 minutes to get a forkie to take it off and reload accordingly.
My last drop would have taken about 30 minutes to drive to and drop…I brought it back to the depot and told Mr Controller that I couldn’t do the drop because they need to understand that there are consequences to leaving concrete blocks in trucks…why should I give up 30 minutes of my time at home because they can’t be bothered to do the job.
Needless to say he wasn’t happy.
So I showed him the photos and told him that I wasn’t sure whether It was right to leave a concrete block on a truck but that I was happy to drive to a vosa check point and ask their opinion…
Obviously his reaction was ok …see you tomorrow drive…
Am I a grumpy old git or have I made a valid point to my employer ?
As long as it was strapped down, what’s the problem.
You are a grumpy old git, with a valid complaint , I should know .
Jim
You created an issue out of a non-issue, I just fail to see the point.
Nobody messed you about, they just forgot to take something off the truck that you didn’t need but as a day man you could have left it on and got someone to take it off when you got back tonight.
There was no reason at all you couldn’t have gone out with the block on, done your day’s run, driven back to the yard and the forkie lifted it off when you went home. Hell there are companies where all they do is haul concrete blocks around. There was no reason you couldn’t have taken the 30 minutes to do the last drop - I’m assuming you were nowhere near a 15hr day.
VOSA wouldn’t have been interested as long as it was secured properly and you were within weight limits and if it wasn’t YOU would have been the person they issued the fine to. They probably would have looked at you as if you were stupid if you were trying to claim that the concrete block was a reason you couldn’t go out. What are you going to do if a customer orders a concrete block the same size, refuse to take it? What a dumbass.
Obviously his reaction was ok …see you tomorrow drive…
My reaction would’ve been “don’t bother coming into work tomorrow.”
Fully loaded plus the concrete block?
So if you were overweight fair play, or if not, and if the block was impeding you getting the drops off…again fair play.
I’m torn between what Robroy said (almost exactly my initial thought, and just laughing at the thought of the DVSA fellas faces in response.

Doesnt sound like theyre the only ones…

No wonder. I wouldnt be either if a driver threw a strop because of a concrete block.
Id have told you to crack on to a dvsa checkpoint just to let you get laughed out of there
If all your deliveries are through the doors, then may be a problem, if through the sides, then get on with it.
Do you throw a tantrum if one of your deliveries is in the wrong place on the truck, i.e. drop 5 is in front of drop 4 ?
You probably spend more time making this point than simply doing the drop and going home.
You also probably wound yourself up about it all day, and you lost some goodfaith with the office.
I’m not judging you as I don’t have the experience to do so - but I personally can’t see the huge problem you got so worked up about.
Am I reading it right.
Block got took off, truck reloaded without block, 40 minutes.
Did days work then thought ■■■■ it, not going to last one.
Why not just claim the extra 40 minutes?

If it’s overloaded or it somehow impedes your deliveries, I can see it would be a pain.
If not, I really don’t get the issue.
And believe me, that problem of 40 minutes hassle is nothing like the hassle you get in an office, having worked both sides.
I can’t imagine any of my lot throwing their toys out of the pram, on the other hand, they probably can’t envisage more than one drop a day!
Sorry, Heisen don’t understand your post or the thread mate.
So, from what i can gather some clot left a concrete block on the trailer, maybe a mistake or maybe for delivery somewhere but paperwork and/or message missed off.
These things happen, if it could be worked around i fail to see the issue, if it couldn’t be worked around then you had it took off and everything was put back by nearly an hour i still don’t see the issue, a minor hiccup in another day on the road and nothing to get one’s ■■■■■■■ twisted over.
Seems like quite a scene to make over a 40 minute delay.
Seems like the OP has quite a cushy little own account number, he would be wise to remember that the customers keep him employed & he will have just ■■■■■■ one off by refusing to make their delivery
If this is being “messed about” then i want a job at this place.
Making a fuss over something and nothing,if the block was impeding deliveries ie boxed motor or dock deliveries, or it made the motor over weight OK, other than that get on with it and bring the block back.
Premadonna. Springs to make mind, or stroppy agency driver.
The o/p is getting a bit of stick here, but only he knows the circumstances.
Maybe he works for a co like mine who think jack ■■■■ about their drivers so he’s re.acting accordinglly, whether that is just being plain arsey for the sake of it is open to interpretation.
Maybe this block took him over his weight, maybe the block was a pain in the arse for getting his drops off…who knows?
Some of these firms DO take the ■■■■ and don’t give a ■■■■, I can’t speak for this guy’s circumstances on this, but if more drivers took a stand on their ■■■■■■■■■ they would stop implementing them.
If they treat their drivers with respect, drivers would reciprocate by working around this sort of stuff and be ready to help out their firms as a team player.
Abuse and ■■■■■■■■■ do not encourage co.operation in any walk of life.
There must be somewhere you can sell concrete blocks no longer needed…i would have found a place to ■■■■ em off that way. Failing that, find a layby…open the doors, whack it in reverse for as fast as you can, and whack the brakes on…will mess up the layby, but problem solved…ha ha …Btw, i agree with rob…again…
