Just talking to one of our drivers yesterday about the number of trucks jacknifing and saying they are obviously driving too fast for the conditions.
Coming up the A1 this morning I passed a jacknifed tipper just north of Leeming and thought theres another one, when about 5 minutes later, travelling at about 45mph on cruise with a very light load on, the drive axle kicked out left and the traction light came on at the same time. At this point I nearly soiled myself I must admit as I didnt expect it on a flat road, low speed with no other factors, such as braking or cornering. I managed to keep it straight. Needless to say, if there had have been a car or other vehicle obstructing my way, it would have been much different.

You live and learn.
was told never to run on limiter or cruise control in adverse weather conditions, was told it affects the traction control settings apparently

Not yet that’s just a warning. The real thing is when it does the same thing when it’s loaded and heavy.Loses traction both sides under load if you then back off the momentum/inertia of the trailer does the rest.

Is there anything you could think of which might prevent this?

Check out the snow chains thread and that video of those two artics running through a snow storm like it was a summer day.
fly sheet thats an oilfield rig. They have been going to them more here in Western Canada, yes alot more traction with them locked up. Dont have a picture right avalible but I do have some 6 axle unit pics I can put on when I find them. Too bad you dont have access for an pic under that nice shiny
tool box, might be a 50 Brador there.
Yeah brentanna the oilfield rigs used to fascinate me I’ve got loads of pics of them, I took that at a Husky but can’t for the life of me remember where. I’d just got empty with Polaris you can see the the sled shop behind the picture, I then re-loaded off the same estate with lumber, not bad for BFS around 500 metres empty running
Use to drive them, put alot of miles on those in the 15 years or so I was hauling rigs. That is the kind of tires I would have liked on the BFS unit, you can wear those right down and still have traction. But BFS would rather fire people for getting stuck rather than put on a set of tires that would finish out the life of the truck.
NEVER NEVER,I REPEAT NEVER use cruise when it’s slippery, fastest way into the ditch no matter what sort of vehicle you’re driving.Didn’t want to shout but this is rule number one.Drive at 10mph with cruise on and you’ll still be in trouble. Please do not use cruise .
