I-shifts & other auto box attrocities

geoffthecrowtaylor:
Looks like you ve made another friend there Cooperman, logic more like illogic our friend Mr. Hindle had many instances of his auto boxed crap rolling back on hill starts into the vehicle behind, expensive and not all his drivers were in experienced Lets go back to my army days if you broke the egg behind the back wheels on a hill start you failed, i ll defyanyone with an auto box not to break the egg and that includes you me little Irish wonder Swichlogic. Icidentally apart from that monumental disaster in Turkey the average clutch life in our F89s was 9 years. Not bad for a bunch of don t know any betters. Rgards Crow.

Hi Crow. Is it not possible to cover the brake with one’s left foot, until drive is taken up, then give it enough right boot to accelerate away up the hill?

I feel unpopular now Geoff now switchlogic has called Me old & has left the thread, I’m the same never been one for needing clutches in lorries I had mither in the T reg Transcon but got it home from Cezch starting it on the key did 4 drops of yarn round the spinners & got it back to Warrington…

I’m off back in today after two weeks off & am going to approach my i-shift with an empty head

Well the way you talk of having been the driver of a T reg Transcon I’d say you’re no spring chicken so I wouldn’t be that far off the truth

Ok then, how much do you want a bet on that

Never had that problem with an auto rolling back myself.

If the story’s about modern drivers burning clutches and destroying gearboxes in short spaces of time are true they shouldn’t be in charge of a skateboard let alone a truck as it’s hardly hard to master a gearbox whatever it’s is.

Now is when someone challenges my to have a go in some old Mack or foden with two gearsticks and make a ■■■■ of myself

Indeed as would I. But I know my own abilities. These chaps think that just because they struggle with something it must be crap. I dont have the same over inflated opinion of my abilities to think that. I just know what I’m doing with an auto.

I believe there is a place for both systems, they both take some getting used to.If you gave a novice driver a twin splitter he would probably say what a load of crap this is,as he struggled to know which gear he was in,and after a week he might say it’s the best thing since sliced bread.I don’t think you can condem auto boxes out of hand any more than anyone can say the same about a 12 speed air change.I have driven most boxes, constant mesh and syncro and auto, everone has their own opinion.Personally,I think I would rather have a Volvo with an i shift than old Atki with a 150 Gardener and 6 speed David Brown.

Oh my god mayday mayday! Common sense alert. You Sir have no place here, take your logic and reason elsewhere

Dear me Switchlogic, and I believed you when you wrote you don’t have an over inflated opinion of yourself, which you obviously do.Please point out your disagreements with my post.

Oooh,Err! I do believe switchlogic was actually supporting your post,Mr.T.

Actually Sir+ I was half agreeing with him, has he misread my post or have I misread his reply!!?

Christ I really have had it with this stupid forum. Absolutely no one reads posts properly or even gets a bit of humour anymore. I apologise wholeheartedly for saying your post was full of common sense, reason and logic.

Goodbye

seems like we’ve got our wires crossed switchlogic, sorry if I upset you,but read your reply again and you can see it can be taken two ways, sorry again if I read it the wrong way.

If it’s all a matter of choice then there’d be no need for anyone who doesn’t want to get involved with the things to be open minded and work with the them etc etc when a guvnor decides that a driver has to put up with it instead of saying along the lines of the fleet is being replaced all those drivers who want a proper 18 speed fuller put their names on the manual list and all those who want an auto put their names on the auto list and that’s how they’ll be ordered. :bulb:

No surprise that the guvnor will probably wish that the list was all in favour of an ordinary fuller when the maintenance bills start arriving or it’s time to sell it on in the used market.

You would loose that bet Geoff because these super auto boxes that you are totally in control of at all times need a little button on the dash so you dont roll back on a hill ,now whos gonna bet that you dont need that button and if so why the hell do they fit one? :open_mouth:

No I can’t see how it could be actually. It was clearly a joke comment in the way it was written and the winking smiley at the end. But like everyone else on here you choose to miss that and get outraged at the non existant insult of it and produce a totally out of proportion reply to what was actually a compliment. The problem with the forum these days is everyone wants an arguement. Its become totally impossible to have a laugh or even agree with someone it seems.

Lukes Top Tip? Spend a little time working out what people are trying to say before angrily taking to the keyboard before you’ve even finished reading. This is aimed at everyone btw. Thought I’d better make that clear.

Never used it. Don’t ask me why they fit it, maybe for people who can’t drive autos?

Everyone? I don’t think so!! I tried to get things on an even keel, not knowing when Mr Logic would be back posting.Sorry for getting involved.Luke’s top tip is a good 'un though.  Have you read it?

Well you could be right , because if there was no problem with them maybe some of these manufacturers may have thought we`ll put a button on the dash just in case someone along the line cant drive them (thats me apparently) and sod the expense

Thank you for that it was nice to know someone got it! I think I’m done here now though…
