I set the limiter to 52mph....and guess what?

Does anyone else think that the faster the vehicle goes, the MORE alert you have to be
I only ask because I have the same level of concentration at every speed.

i’m always more alert when i’m speeding. i would pack in the job if i had to drive with a 52mph limiter.

Does that mean you are less alert when going slower

So you use the Blackwall Tunnel?? You wouldn’t be driving a little 'un by any chance, would you??

What a daft comment… Have you never heard of trailers or Wag n’ Drags under 13’ 4" or steel trailers and flatbeds■■?

Ragnarok:
The Blackwall Tunnel has a height restriction of 13’ 4" going north bound. I drive class 2 and it depends upon the height of the body as to what I can take through it in that direction. Until a month or so ago I was driving a rigid that was 13’ 6" and that meant a little cruise on the Woolwich Ferry, which was a complete pain. Is there a problem with driving rigids?

I hope this isn’t one of those forums with little established clique’s, or where Class 1’s are sneering at Class 2’s because they feel superior in some egotistical way? That would be a real shame as truck drivers are truck drivers, we all face the same problems and challenges.

I shall try to refrain from expressing opinions that may upset somebody or another, but I so hate self censorship and political correctness. I shall go and make a cuppa now

Chill out M8 you sound like your the one with a complex there are only 2 types of drivers good ones and bad ones and most of the time we are both…

What’s daft about it, Reef?? I made the coment simply because reading the guys (Ragnarok) comment, I surmised he drove a litte 'un. Something wrong with that?? As it happens I was wrong because he drives a 26 tonner where I had judged him to be a seven and a half tonner!

And if you was so up to scratch, you would have seen my post on here earlier this year about the Blackwall Tunnel.
Sorry, I have only been driving 27 years this year so never heard of any of the types you mentioned. Would you like to describe each to me so I don’t get caught out again?
It is times like this when I sit here and think “Prick”

I still don’t believe setting the limiter between 85-90 makes any difference on economy. .

It dont on mine. If I’m not on a mission I will quite often at 53 - 54 mph on the CC, But if like Friday when I had a bit more to do than is preferable on a friday (my big mouth), I run at full limiter 57mph on my truck… And it still turned in 9.1mpg,

Its a loaded question

I doubt many people plan to use less concentration when driving slower, so in theory no you should have the same level of concentration.

But in reality thats not really the case.

Also there is 56mph and there is 56mph, both obviously are the same speed.

Travling on the M6 south of Knutsford during the day 56mph can be fast and you need to be really alert because of the amount of traffic. There is constantly somthing going on. On busy motorways you will be changing lanes a lot more, slowing down at times, speeding up. Have a lot more vehicles round about you.

On the other hand there is 56mph on the likes of the M74 when it can be really quiet and you don’t come across another truck heading the same way as yourself for long periods of time where there is less happening and its easier to subconciously drift off. On empty motorways like the M74 espec at night 56mph can feel really slow.

Also depends how far you are going, 30mins an hour on the motorway thats easy. Different speeds arent going to make a huge difference. 3-4hours motorway driving through think thats when in a mental state things get different.

56mph limiters go against advice from proffesional driving bodies including the police when giving advice for motorists undertaking long journeys because of the lack of input and constant drone of the engine at the same tone. It can make drivers loose concentration, can slow down responses.

Driving at slower speed ? Well i do trunks down to Haydock occasionally for the place i’m working for just now. Different speeds make a huge difference mentally to me i have to admit. Using a MAN and the limiter seems to be about 52mph or less the shift really drags in when i am constantly being overtaken. I do feel more tired and bored. Another truck we do the same run in is a Volvo and it seems to be limited more like 57mph because its passing most other trucks on the road. When driving the Volvo the shift seems to go a lot faster and i seem to have much more stuff going on, and prob much more alert. IN reality its still a long shift and time difference isnt really that great but mentally i find there is a difference.

I don’t plan to be less alert or concentrate less driving the MAN but i’d bet money if there was tests to test reactions, concentration etc… i would be much more sharper driving the Volvo.

It seems ragnarok isn’t the only one who needs to chill out :unamused:

You’d have thought though with 27 yrs driving under your belt you would have learnt by now not to make assumptions  and also not to get so wound up by someone saying your comment was (in my opinion) daft

It wasn’t intended as a personal attack just a personal observation if you dont like it fine but dont start “thinking” names at me

27yrs driving and you still need to grow up ffs

It was ‘loaded’ because someone said that they would get bored and have less concentration at 49 as opposed to 56mph…

The day i get a motor that’s limited to 85k, i’ll give up driving. I get tired enough at 90k…

It must be me    … I cannot figure out WHY the speed of a truck should be such an issue 49, 52, 54, 56… the longer it takes, the less miles are driven, the more pay is earned if hourly paid … unless of course the only people who object to lower limiters are those who are not hourly paid… maybe someone can enlighten me… PLEASE

Don’t be daft Rog …

Less speed less miles , I wish …
All it means now is it takes longer and is more tiring …

Ours have been knocked down to 54mph , on GPS they are only doing 51 mph .
Exeter is a killer , It was about 3hrs 30- 3hrs 45 …
Now its 4hrs to 4hrs 15 depending on how the run goes …

3 o clock in the morning on an empty M5 doing 51 mph
It’s crap . At 56 mph it never bothered me as you were overtaking and being more involved . Now you overtake nothing and just drone away and it kills me . I never used to mind the run but now I hate it .

It’s a bad idea …

Must be the way I look at things as I do not see a problem - perhaps it’s my logical realistic view point that prevents me from seeing this as you do

Perhaps try it !

You are no longer involved with the drive , you are sat on cruise holding the wheel on an almost dead motorway network . You don’t catch anything up , you don’t overtake anything , you just drone along on a quiet , almost empty very dark motorway in the early hours of the morning .
I would come off the motorway and cross country it , but then I would run out of time getting back .
Why do you think I would go cross country rog ?

paul@midway:
Perhaps try it !

DONE IT    - What some call the boring road bit - but to me, no road is boring - as I said before, perhaps it is a matter of perception.

Now answer the cross country question

I´m with Rog on this one with cruise control on you have to THINK to find the brake pedal and that could be the difference between a change of underwear and your family or someone elses arranging a funeral.

Only unsafe / dangerous when used incorrectly. Pretty much like the rest of any vehicle.
