And according to another poster the vehicle did actually have a defect that came under the test (does 58 ring a bell?) which someone else who takes motors in every week for test didn’t know about! Still made me smile though Spanky…
i remember when i first started had to do a night run to lutterworth from exeter in a 3 series scanny in the middle of summer with the heater jammed on full blast and the gearstick was a metal rod welded onto what was left of the stick and the range changed taped onto the side, they have never had it so good now adays
oh and the n/s mirror was in 500 pieces no one to repair it at night either go or not earn a bean

58 is an Additional Braking Device (including retarders)*1
*1 means “if legally required to be fitted.”
A retarder is an optional extra!

By the way, when I started in Transport the best companies to learn, where the one with old scabby fleet,
Companies you should have tried working for Surrey County Council in 1980.An old 1975 Clydesdale was luxury compared to these.

If the FM Volvo’s have more than 3000 k on them I won’t be taking it out - way to old for me .
I refuse the Merc Axor’s - well because their Merc’s

I can only hope the above is a wind~up , otherwise I suggest a visit to your G P and ask him to check your medication .

Well i got through it - they offered me an FM Volvo with 5000km on the clock - I was a bit dubious about taking it ,I gave it a good looking over I can tell you - you can’t be to carefull these days.
I found some blue roll in one of the doorpockets and was just about to VOR it when the Transport manager turned up to check everything was all right . After tearing strips off him about the state of his lorries he took me out round the back and gave me the keys to a brand new FH 660 XL - result . Dont know what I’ll drive tonight - there aren’t any more new ones left !( Of course its a wind up - don’t you recognize sarcasm when you see it ?)

I didn’t want to look like a spoiled brat and the 750 is only a day cab
18 months ago the agency sent me into a company for an early start. Got there, handed over the licence, they checked it over and gave me the keys and told me where the lorry was.
It was a new hired in truck, not even a thousand Kms on the clock, felt quite nice up there in that truck. Lovely and clean, not even any satnav rings in the windscreen. Practically a virgin truck, unabused in any way. No mud on the floors, everything worked as it should and so went back into the office
Pointed out it was a very nice lorry but was did they want me to do with it, and they laid out their plans. They looked a mix between crestfallen and annoyed when I said I’d struggle to do all that they wanted. I pointed out the truck wasn’t going to be good enough for that, it could barely carry a pallet and there were no straps…
One guy in the office starting having a rant at how unreliable agency drivers were, that that was a brand new truck and I was refusing it already. I waited for them to finish before pointing things out.
Such as, I was a Class 2 and that being a unit out there, I’d struggle to balance a pallet on the fifth wheel and. Oh, yeah. I could drive it. Until you wanted to put a trailer on it…
It was about now they looked a bit closer at my license…
Later on the Agency refused to accept that the job had been properly cancelled. But, oddly enough, they got me work later in the day!!!
As said before, as long the faults aren’t safety critical, I’ll drive it. It depends at the time and I am quite prepared to wait for the fitter to fix the faults before I go out. I don’t mind waiting. I’m hourly paid, it’s boring mind, but if I’m careful I’ll have a book to read too
