was left in deepest wales with no vehicle, or digs - and given the previous weeks workless due to dvla ■■■■-up combined with trip over the severn bridge - no money. straw that broke the camels back as it were and handed in verbal notice on wednesday afternoon. to rub it in, the digs they DID finally find, in cwmbran and paid for on company credit card (and so are deducted from my wages) was £70 and in the middle of nowhere - so a simple bite to eat was nearly £15 extra (had enough on own card for nosh though). so after night out money accounted for, nearly £50 out of next wage slip - which negated the days work.
what a waste of a day!
lots of other issues and so it had to stop.
within minutes of telling the local agency to home I’d be available for work soon they lined up a full week for me. just gonna do the rounds of some more to provide more chance, during the notice period (illegal to stop me, and not being paid anyway) and then I’ll be free to work!
WHOAH back that truck up a minute, they are deducting the cost opf the digs from your wages? Unless there was a prior agreement that they would do that I am pretty sure they can’t do it. You shouldn’t have to pay that they should. You should seek some advice pretty quickly.
It is illegal for them to take any money from your pay packet unless you agreed before hand! regardless of how you decided to finish your job week in hand or not! as Neil said get legal advise, dont let the cowboys rip you off!
neil & tc,i was talking to a lad that travels the uk delivering and colloecting trucks.he was telling me that he gets 25 notes nite out money,ie for digs.if the company credit card is used to cover digs above 25 notes then it comes out of following weeks wage.just my pennies worth.the company this guy worked for was uniloads
standard company procedure. the moment we ask them to pay on company credit card for digs thats the agreement. some common courtesy on the amount being paid would be nice though. not 4 minutes before I was told where I’d be staying I’d come out of the tourist office in newport with 10 places highlighted under £50 a night. didn’t get through to the office in time though sadly, due to poor 02 network coverage

I know this happens Jim but your mate has agreed in advance! so theyfor the company can take these expenses from his wages!
I have made my opinions quite clear about these type of companies here on TruckNet. all I am saying is before you sign the dotted line when working for these type of employers make sure you know the rules before hand!
Regardless of the exact legal position, you are better off without them. To treat you like this is completely unacceptable.
Why should you pay for digs in Cwmbran? You didn’t want to be in Cwmbran- you were on their business. They should pay it.
I am in a similar position myself, having given in a week’s notice because my employer will not get my radio repaired because “it doesn’t affect the productivity of the truck”.
Where do these people get their ideas from? Roll on the WTD, when these losers will finally be driven out of business!
Linux-user:
Totally agree Vince, i am quitting tomorrow as the Boss have just removed lighter sockets so we can’t use kettles etc Is that pathetic or what??
Easy way round that Linux, turn up for work tomorrow with your portable gas stove and whistling kettle and then ask the boss: “FANCY A BREW■■?”

Didn’t think those bosses still existed in these times of driver shortages. Hope they get the drivers they deserve.
Just a word of warning about carrying a gas stove and cylinder.
Zorba will know more about this than me but going back to the double fatal on the A44 outside Worcester in early June (this thread) rumour control has it that, one of the drivers, Nick Summerill, had a gas bottle in the cab which caused a secondary explosion. Apparently it took the Fire Service something like five hours to find his body as he been blasted through what remained of the cab, into the trailer.
I have to say that Nick was one of the most pleasant and tolerable persons that I have ever met in this Industry, and I hope that his partner and kids are managing to rebuild their lives.
Ever done any work for the bakery in Norwich Muckles ?. No radios, dodgy fuel gauges, non working flood lights positioned so you hit them when reversing onto bays, wing mirrors from 7.5 tonners fitted to 17 tonners.
Poor guy and family, to be honest never really thought of that as i have one of the small flat ones that come in a briefcase size case with the little cylinders and it normally sits under bunk.

Nope driven some dodgy motors, but radio is part of my checklist, no radio equals unfit for road use.
Being both PSV & HGV I’m use to driving vehicles that have no radio fitted as policy, I have driven buses with radios fitted but its not normal & I don’t like tham on if passengers are onboard.
But trucks, OK I’ve driven classic vehicles with none fitted & moved vehicles were it’s on the to be fixed list, but this is 2004, not 1964. I exspect to be given the wage & wagon that goes with the age I am driving in.
No company would get away with removing modern H & S requirements or tacho’s so why do they think no radio or electric point is acceptable.
