Why do people think it’s acceptable to drive like this?
rob22888:
Your complaining about the van driver whinging about being held up by a few minutes, when you actually gained probably nothing whatsoever by overtaking - the other truck was probably right behind you at the next roundabout. At the end of the day unless your a trolley driver none of us should even be on the limiter on a dc so we dont have a leg to stand on. Just knock the cc down a few clicks.
Yes keep knocking the cc down a few clicks every time you come up behind a slower veichle and we will all drive in a big bunched up line, Ffs man think before you open your mouth he passed him with ease in slightly over a min, do you follow tractors and wide loads etc? Do you actually have an hgv?
Conor:
Held him up for 30 seconds? It took you at least 1 minute 30 seconds and a mile and a half to do that overtake. 1 minute 30 seconds to gain 80ft on the vehicle in front. In an hour you’d end up no more than 2/3 of a mile further than if you’d not overtaken the truck.Yet to gain that 2/3 of a mile over an hour, if that road had been any busier such as the A14, you’d have caused a fair whack of congestion behind you and a lot of narked motorists.
And truckers wonder why car drivers think they’re knobs.
WTF you never overtake anyone.
It dont matter how long the van driver was held up for, there was no need for his actions.
He could have caused an accident just for being a muppet,an may have caused the death of innocent people
I don’t see what the truck driver did wrong - nobody has the right to drive at the speed limit on any given road at any given time now do they? I expect that any “congestion” created behind dispersed in a matter of seconds once he had pulled back in. The van driver, by making our friend here pull out again, no doubt caused even more congestion by pulling such a stupid truck as slamming on in front of an HGV! I wish they would throw the book at the van driver, he could have caused a serious accident.

personally, i would show this video to the police, as it can be classed as a road rage incident, and you clearly have the vehicle reg number showing, and also the fact the he brake tested you
That may be a problem, I’m not saying op was speeding, but the camera I have has GPS and records speed as well, that is a dual carriage way and as a result is a 50, it may just be worth checking he’s not handing himself in
Again, I’m not saying he was speeding, just to check he wasn’t. Unless it was recorded on a phone app and then crack on, I would hand it in.

Yes mine is an app that has GPS and records speed too so I have to be carefull when showing someone something.
I love listening to all the do gooders on here. He wasn’t even creeping past, I was surprised to see how quickly he was actually passing him. The van driver would have waited longer at a set of traffic lights. If the OP was in a faster truck, why shouldn’t he overtake?? People need to learn to share the road, and the OP said he pulled out way before the van was in sight anyway so what’s the problem.

Let’s say the OP was doing 50mph, he was catching up on the other lorry doing 47mph, so pulls out, passes on the limiter, pulls back in, drops back to 50.
I’d say that’s not only acceptable, but expected. And is exactly what I’d do, I don’t speed, but have no interest in going slow for no reason either.
But I’m also not going to hold everyone up by passing at 50mph when I can do 58, get past in no time and slow back down.

I agree, it often happens when I’m in my car, on the rare occasion that I’m driving at 70mph (normally faster to leave the knob heads behind) if I start overtaking another car they usually start to speed up so I’m not going to creep by, I will put my foot down to get by them even if that means speeding.

What? How have you come to the conclusion that i would sit behind tractors and wide loads
If i knocked the cc down a few clicks to stay behind another wagon then if i came up against an even slower one i would have plenty of speed in reserve to then overtake quickly. Call me a do gooder if you like, but i do time senstive work myself so am often in a rush to get places so yes i am often on the limiter on dcs like most others, just i learnt after a while that slow mile+ long overtakes rarely get you anywhere or make any difference to your day and arent worth holding traffic up for. Just a bit of courtesy, we dont own the roads.

True, but we all have a reasonable expectation not to get held up unnecessarily and for other road users to show some courtesy. You have only got to look at the amount of trucks dangerously tail gating cars in lane 2 on the m62 everyday trying to bully them into going 50 rather than 49 to see that we dont like it either. Imagine if you could be going 15-20mph quicker!
FFS, Daidap did nothing wrong yet some people are slatting him for daring to overtake a slower vehicle on a d/c. Sorry but the only person at fault there was the tool in the transit van.
Anyway Daidap, have you changed trucks/jobs, not seen you up and about in jockland for ages.

Ditto, its an overtaking lane that anyone is entitled to use if they’re making decent progress on the vehicle in front they want to pass, and as regular user of the A40/A449 Dai would be well aware the truck he was overtaking was the type normally running full weight laden with scrap destined for the steel mills in South Wales, and once he reached the hills, traffic lights and r/bouts on that route he would be miles in front before he even got to the M4, its called using your head and forward planning
And if were going to be pedantic that type of van is limited to 60mph on a DC, he’s going far faster than that when he initially overtakes, then clears off into the distance again in excess of 70mph
DEVILS ADVOCATE MODE …
DaiDap:
He was miles behind when i pulled out.
That will be the point where if van driver was reported he,and his mates in van if there were any, will say that you deliberately and dangerously pulled out on him
Plod will then say that the van driver should not have retaliated and give you both a rap on the knuckles but you probably more than the van driver because as a professional you should have known better especially as you started it !!!
A reverse view camera for Xmas ■■
rob22888, do you really think i held him up unnecessarily? As i said, he didn’t catch up until i was level with the Scania. Do you think i hung it out for longer than i needed? And do you think van man was entitled to show his frustration in the way he did?
Mark, still in the same truck and still go to Scotch, but i haven’t been on the A76 for a while. Passed you on the M6 in ■■■■■■■ a few weeks ago.

so, going by your statement, and also that of Conor, if it was a car that was travelling at 60Mph on the dc overtaking the lorry, and the tool in the van was doing 70Mph, would it then be the car drivers fault and get the abuse from the transit driver?
everyone has the right to overtake slower vehicles if the road allows them to, unless dictated by the road signs, such as the ‘No Overtaking for HGV’ signs on the A14 and the M42
was the van drivers life irreparably inconvenienced by the OP with his overtaking of the other lorry?
obviously not, as he then had the time to do a stupid and dangerous act of brake testing the HGV
at the end of the day, the OP did nothing wrong by overtaking the slower vehicle, the only person who committed a serious lack of judgement was the van driver

I’m not defending the transit driver being a nob, but i can appreciate why he might be frustrated. If you can’t appreciate why he might be frustrated then ask yourself why you are defending trucks holding traffic up by constantly overtaking those going little faster than they are just to gain an often negliable advantage.
It’s true that the op did absolutely nothing wrong according to the letter of the law, he may well have had good reasons to want to get round him at that very moment as a previous poster has eluded to, buts its my opinion that more generally speaking these types of slow overtakes and stubborn refusal to come off the limiter/cc setting that you see all the time day in day out quite often on busier roads holding up loads of traffic and causing congestion through braking waves is daft and shows complete lack of courtesy and consideration towards other road users when we are supposed to be professionals. We all expect car drivers to show us courtesy and give us space, even just for a slight advantage, and kick off royally if we don’t get it but don’t seem interested in reciprocating.
Anyway, whatever, lets just agree to disagree.
