I love my job

Bking:
So if you worked a flat 40 hours your pay would be ?
Sick of repairing trucks ,old man and sick of listening to thick [zb] drivers ■■■■■■■.
Went to woodsides did the “appraisal” and this SOB offerd me 7 .80 a [zb] hour (less than half what Im paid to repair the [zb] things.

And you “skilled” men swallow this [zb]!
Mind you our “driving fraternity” are hardly the sharpest knives in the drawer are they.

Probably offered you what they thought appropriate, if a lorry driver applied they might have offered a proper wage.

I resemble that remark [emoji36]

Oops, resent [emoji11]
If only I was as brainy as a ‘fitter’ [emoji57]

happysack:
Yep. Also have an axe and a lot of cable ties.

What about the roll of carpet for hiding the evidence. You aint a proper ■■■■■■ trucker until you carry a roll of carpet.
I know this because …The Voices told me :smiling_imp:

If you love your job it’s half the battle so fair play to you mate.
If you are still on here in 10/20 yrs time you may think different, but make the best of it while you still can.

To the guy asking why and how things were better in the old days, …Well lucky for you I’m wearing my rosy specs at the moment so start with…

No ■■■■■■ cab phones ( Ring me Thursday when you are empty  )

No trackers, YOU told THEM where you were if you could (or more like could be arsed) to find a phone box  )

Most towns had a designated truck park.

Nobody parked in lay bys ( except unsociable batsards…so no change there  )

No limiters.

12 and half hour spreadover, log books before tachos.

Not half the rules and petty regs then as now.

Police showed discretion and no speed cameras.
There were numerous downsides like trucks that unlike today’ s car like motors, you needed a skill to drive them and they were pretty rough compared to todays, Scanias and Volvos were a bit more refined than Brit motors though.
I would have to take my rosys off for more downsides, but you didn’t ask anyway.

btw. Nice to see the usual cheery and friendly post from old Burger King, he hasn’t been on to cheer us up for a while now :

When people talk of the good old days they mean when they themselves were young.Remember when you could ■■■■ without making a mark and summon an erection at the drop of a hat or a pair of knickers, now they were the good old days.

Yeh but I can still do ALL them :sunglasses:

So can i but things seemed larger back then… :open_mouth:

A muppet with a licence
2 weeks"training",a pair of raybans and voila a “skilled man”
give me a break eh!

I am pretty sure you knew the wage at Woodside’s before you went for an assessment. If you didn’t, that makes you thick in my book.

It seems you were rejected by them. Which means THEY probably think you are thick. If you did know the wage, and went for the assessment and didn’t want the job anyway, that makes you a timewaster. Which means you are thick.

Basically…YOU ARE THICK.

There is a flaw in your argument! I don’t understand your argument, as i am thick!

Face:
I really enjoy my work, ok sometimes it’s a ball-ache depending on the particular job, but generally I love it, & find most people I encounter along the way to be amiable, helpful, and good for a laugh. My pay is pretty good, the trucks are good to drive, people at my company are nice, I usually do between 10-12 hours a shift which is fine. I’ve had my fair share of curtain-side-windy-weather buckle smacks in the teeth and other ‘ooh-ya-■■■■■■■■■ moments, but it’s one of the few jobs where I can look how I like, don’t get stuck in one place or in a room with co-workers all day, & can choose whether to have a natter to others or not when stuck at a Tesco or Iceland for 3 hours :grimacing: , and being naturally sweary, I don’t have to curb it too much; I sing along to the radio all shift long and nobody screams!

I agree. Still agency right now and yes some jobs are a pain in my arse but it’s all experience. Looking forward to a permanent job!

You must be a hoot to live with.

What is a lorry driver is actually quite a good question, probably similar to what’s a fitter?

No, two weeks course at Jack Spot’s driving academy doth not make one a lorry driver, it never has, it never will, the test is flawed and all of us know it in our hearts including those who’s business it is and those administering it.
Daresay a two week course in lorry mechanics won’t produce a lorry mechanic worth a light either.

It’s a basic, too basic, test to see if you’re anywhere near competent enough to be allowed out to steer a commercial vehicle on your own, the industry as a whole recognises this hence why newbies find it very difficult to find decent work inside two years and found themselves some relevant experience, though those of us that have driven lorries for long enough know that you never ever stop learning no matter how long you do the job, is that the same in lorry mechanics?, that’s if you can be bothered to take a pride in your work and learn the idiosyncrasies strengths and weaknesses of the particular vehicle/type you are allocated to drive.
In practice it’s not until you’ve been doing the job for a good number of years and have a proven work record that you start to move up the ladder onto the good jobs that are still out there and always will be, some drivers get lucky but for most of us its ten years plus before the good times come, for some sadly it never happens.

However i understand you are apparently some sort of lorry mechanic, now in my experience good lorry mechanics don’t apply for underpaid lorry driving jobs because they know their true worth, if they decide to come off the spanners its usually into the top end of the driving game because by doing the job they do, if they are any good at it, they get to know the drivers worth speaking to and find out where those plum jobs are, and any good company that uses lorries (not hauliers necessarily as the money isn’t there) will value having that knowledge on the team, might not be paid any more but it’s a hell of draw for a company paying their drivers serious money.
Surprised that you wasted your time going where you did, even more surprised that you expected a different offer when a bit of asking around, maybe actually speaking politely to a proper lorry driver or two (i know some fitters find this bit difficult, why speak when a grunt or even blanking the driver gets the same result eh?, though mechanics usually have no trouble conversing) you’d have known your quest there was pointless.

I must admit the one thing I miss about driving is being left alone, just me myself and my brain for hours on end. no one telling me what to do and when.

what I don’t miss is thinking a 4am start was a lie in.

I’m at the stage now that I don’t start before 6. If I’m in the mood the earliest I will go is 5 to 5.30. I just can not raise the required amount of enthusiasm to get my arse out of bed to start any earlier, …been there done that for too long, so I leave it to the heroes and eager to please types, of which I am neither  . If that makes me lazy in some eyes I don’t, give a ■■■■, I prefer it being put down as more sensible than lazy.
I still get through the required workload, so my boss says nothing about it.
Apart from that any start pre 5 should be for an increased rate in this day and age.

No Im not some “sort” of lorry mechanic.I am a truck mechanic with 40 years experience.
I have worked in merc ,iveco, renault main agents and I have to say that most ,no all these muppets have not a ■■■■■ clue what they are doing.
These “experts” are all about making money.
I take pride in my work and the vehicles I work on.I know how the brakes, fuel, gearbox works and if a system fails I want to know why.
See as with all things you find good and bad.I meet many driver,99.5% aint worth talking too but that 0.5% makes it all worth while, they want to know how things work. They give a ■■■■ how their truck goes and stops.
Same as in my job some see it as “bolt this on here etcetc”
I want to know why its bolted on.
I know I “upset” people on this website but only because I think they should have at least a basic understanding of how a truck works.
