Instead of asking why you don’t get pay raise after your boss witnesses your bottomless pit of cash you have spent on making his trucks look good with 2ks worth of spots and tat (and trading your hols for all that crap)…let’s blame the foreigners.
People actually do that■■?
Oh yes
Chap at my place has just spent £100 on a lightboard for the back of the bunk with the company logo. I was quite harsh with him!
Yeah I didn’t notice until he pointed it out. I called him a ■■■■■■■ idiot amongst other things
And yet there are people, like me, who went from taking home 73 quid a week JSA 3 weeks ago, to taking home 1k over a 2 week period that I´ve just been paid for. 7.5t. Hourly rate between 10 and 12.50.
Am I happy with that? Hell yeah. I can finally buy some new frikkin clothes!
Horses for courses.

Anglo-Nubian and Robroy, both spot on.I’ve been working 40yrs now and have watched the pay disparity grow year by year. I’d happily spit on Thatcher’s grave but have to admit her plan starting with the breakup then demonisation of the unions leading to a subordinate and more controllable society to the benefit of the social elite has worked a treat.

I couldn’t agree more with all three.
Rob, I am pro union but the Tories and Labour have legislated away most union powers in the UK over the last 20 years however it is still the only way to go.
The Tories said that shortcomings of UK working life were the fault of Brussels,The EU and the loss of control of the borders.
The OP mentioned the apparent “Driver Shortage” which I assumed would worsen after Brexit when EU’s are no longer entitled to come in for jobs.
Now there are plenty out there saying that in fact there will be more foreigners than ever coming in but from much poorer parts of the world who will work for a lot less than todays rates.
Some are saying the government want out of EU so they can dump minimum wage, working time directive and a bunch of other stuff to make the UK more competitive.
If true, this would be a bodyblow to all workers and a boon for the rich.
WTF is really going on■■?
Yes, unionise and fight for better conditions depot by depot and hopefully shut down the worst of the rate slashers real quick.
But if the government and big business have a cunning plan of super cheap labour imports and an employers free for all in the labour market once rid of the EU employee protections and benefits then I fear for the worse.
So who can we believe■■?

Youre asking the same questions as me. Look at the "Gig Economy". Another form of workers on the cheap? Hailed by some as a way to more flexibility, but try getting a mortgage on a zero hours contract, or as self employed. Companies get workers without paying the correct taxes and National Insurance. Not enough hours one week to pay for food for kids? The Gov (i.e. taxpayers like us) will subsidise the low-wage companies. Too few "moral" employers out there now; like Lever Brothers (major issues overseas with them though), Cadbury and even Ford when Henry started out. Companies that look after their employees get better production and are a part of the society they exist in and rely on for customers. Mega rich shareholders now leave conventional society behind and fail to care. Too few police because of tax cuts, so muggers are free? They rob pedestrians. Doesn
t affect the rich who live in “gated communities” and have personal guards. They gain more from tax cuts than we ordinary workers. We lose in other ways too as we couldn`t afford Private Hospitals or Schools even if we paid zero tax. Yet their papers still sell tax cuts as good for workers!
How many talk about nice cars and say “You only get what you pay for”, but quibble about a couple of quid extra on their tax to pay for education or Nurses wages?
For the future look up “Universal Basic Income” on the net. I dont know how we can there from here, and won
t help us today, but it is interesting stuff. Check out the Wikipedea entry especially the section concerning automation and slavery.
Here is a teaser:
“Automation has been happening for hundreds of years; it has not permanently reduced the employment rate but has constantly caused employment instability. It displaces workers who spend their lives learning skills that become outmoded and forces them into unskilled labor. Paul Vallée, a Canadian tech-entrepreneur and CEO of Pythian, argues that automation is at least as likely to increase poverty and reduce social mobility than it is to create ever-increasing unemployment rate. At the 2016 North American Basic Income Guarantee Congress in Winnipeg, Vallée examined slavery as a historical example of a period in which capital (African slaves) could do the same things that human labor (poor whites) could do. He found that slavery did not cause massive unemployment among poor whites, but instead increased economic inequality and lower social mobility”
and
" basic income as a project for reforming capitalism into an economic system by empowering labor in relation to capital, granting labor greater bargaining power with employers in labor markets, which can gradually de-commodify labor by decoupling work from income. This would allow for an expansion in scope of the “social economy”, by granting citizens greater means to pursue activities (such as the pursuit of art) that do not yield strong financial returns."
The prose may be dense but it is worth looking at.
I notice nobody has come on to tell me I’m talking through my arse since my post a couple of days ago, on the (self inflicted) reasons the job has turned to crap over the years, and as the thread title says… we have ended up as mugs.
Should I put the lack of argument down to a few uncomfortable home truths being realised by a few people, and the penny’s dropped, or what ?
