THE UNODC also massage their figures
“Massage their figures” is a very specific phrase to use. It sounds like you are suggesting (non-criminal) intentional dishonesty.
Hyh:
{The UNODC} aren’t an enforcing body in any nation in regards to criminal law, so their source of figures could be called into question as they’ll be via third party sources, which can always present “grey areas” open to interpretation.
How far can we, as private individuals go in looking at the sources of any statistics, or any other form of information or news? To take the germ of your argument and rapidly grow it on, wouldnt we end at believing nothing we hadn
t seen with our own eyes? We may never be fooled again, but we would know
nothing.
But to look at this instance, stats from different countries will be from different sources, and the validity of such should be examined. The “3rd party sources” may be the law enforcement agencies involved and may have a greater interest than the UNODC in presenting any figures in a certain way.
It is, we can agree, difficult to get accurate data. But can you suggest any better sources, than the UN?
Hyh:
Stats can be massaged in many different ways - My comment you replied on, would in effect discount large cities from statistics to see if the problem is mainly in big major cities or if it is everywhere - Nothing wrong with looking at specific areas under the microscope to see if there are any telling issues that could go towards suggesting a solution
Examining different aspects of any data set may enable a greater understanding of what may be happening. Looking at cities and rural areas separately is probably a good idea.
Merely “discounting” one sub-set may be called “massaging” figures, but looking at separate areas discretely isnt. So long as figures are used in an open and transparent way, I don
t think much should be disallowed in their manipulation.

Keeping things slightly more relevant to the West, perhaps it would be worth looking at how Switzerland deals with knife crime, if such a thing exists, since their population is also well armed as a %. Prague to an extent is similar in the Czech Republic with, arguably, the most relaxed firearms laws in the EU
Yep. Interesting to compare and contrast differing circumstances to see what can be teased out.
Hyh:
Murder being illegal isn’t preventing knife crime deaths, making having a knife on your person illegal isn’t working, so why do people think extra laws will work ?
True enough.
