How much of your tacho do DVSA look at in a spot check?

Just for interest, if it’s literally a spot check with nothing more to it i.e. They’ve no reason to believe your a Micky taker with it etc and have no reason to specifically investigate the tacho more deeply, what do they look at? Is it just the last 28 days? And would they just look at your card or download the vehicle as well? Or does it all literally depend on the mood of the officer at the time?

the mood, the time, the nature of the stop…who you work for if your on a green light or red flag, whether you pass or fail the attitude test.or in my case driving on northern or southern ireland plates, means that any stop is going to take on something that closely resembles the nuremberg trials.

I don’t think it takes very long to look at your tacho in depth. Think I’m right in saying they can download the card and the software highlights any infringements.

Is that similar to how my company give me infringement print outs then?

Look at as much of your info as they want, say anything and they will make a meal of it,same as you never give the Police any lip,let them do as they want gets you get on your way quicker.

I got pulled a couple of months ago! No problems at all the guy was fine with me. He took my card and was gone 50 mins with it? Didn’t find any problems with it though! Was happy with the truck commented he could see it was clean and looked after. Didn’t download the head? I’m guessing it’s like the above comment said depending on the traffic light system with your company and if my card had lots of problems I’m sure they would have downloaded the truck to make sure your not popping the card out to finish the trip ect. This was my first pull! August bank holiday weekend on the Saturday about 15.30! I even joked I didn’t think you guys worked Saturdays especially bank holiday weekends! Asked why it was me pulled and he just said honestly you was the only lorry any where near the slip road! Like I say no problems no attitude from them and I just wanted to get home so I just let them do as they needed and got on my way!

I guess from their point of view attitude = you’ve potentially got something to hide.

50 mins seems along time to be looking at your card for though considering it was a luck of the draw kind of stop. They must have gone further back than 28 days to have it for that long.

Last time I was pulled they looked at the last 3 months on the card and I had 3 infringements between the 2nd and 3rd months. Basically said well nothing in the last 28 days so off you go.

So your saying the card records more then 28 working days?

A driver card holds a minimum of 28 days of records, in reality there’s likely to be 9 to 12 months of data on most drivers card.

The last time I was stopped the DVSA wheel tappers checked the whole vehicle and they was done in about 45 minutes, they found no problems and never bothered to check my card

Yep, holds far more than 28 days. If you’re like me on night trunks where you’re not doing much stopping and starting so there’s not many mode changes then it’ll hold far more days worth than someone doing local multidrop.

Over here theres infringement pricing, whatever the final cost the Guardia Civils wallet will always be fatter once on your way…

They downloaded my truck and if I remember right took my card , you’ll then have a interview , statement , x amount of hours immobilised , a dirty great proabition notice stuck in your windscreen reminding you your in deep ■■■■ ( you’ll not sleep well) , you’ll them have interviews , disiplinary meetings , then months on tender hooks wondering what’s comming your way .

I’ve been stopped twice in my life (few times with my Dad when I was a kid we were stopped but they were a different bunch back then) and one time they checked card, the other didn’t even ask about tacho.
All depends on your attitude, if your a fool who starts filming them and moaning I’m pretty sure they’ll keep you there for ages and check whatever is on your card. Remember your card can hold months on it not 28 days.

Yeah it goes a lot further back than the 28 days. I’ve been back for a print out from 3 months ago before now to try and find out something. I was just wondering if DVSA were only really concerned with your previous 28 days unless they are investigating you or the company into mor depth.

As far as I’m aware they will generally only be interested in the past 28 days, obviously if they find you’ve been persistently disregarding the rules they’d go back further.

This was the occasion that the stobart planners planned for dozy to work 31 days straight with no rest day and worked a 20 hour day every one of the 31 days, and said it will be reeeet, just write on the tacho print out you were looking for somewhere to park.

No it x amount of mins ( 6,7,8 ) or something around there without a card in , and I’d taken my daily rest from taking the card out , that’s why I was parked up for 13 hrs ( 4 were my choice ) as I’d had enough daily rest ( think I was roughly 15 mins short ) , 3 one of driving without card in morning was only for just over a minute and that was dropped from my understanding .
it was a one off as vosa chap even said why ? You’ve got nothing else , why didn’t you just write on a printout
But that’s the past , the only thing I’d say is never take that card out for a minute / two , they’ll know if they stop you
