I had a headlight go at Magor yesterday Sunday evening. How much would a big company be charged for a headlight bulb to be replaced.
Here goes. I see at least 3 pages debating the merits of drivers being able/allowed to change their own bulbs

call out can be as much as £150 night call out, then the price of the bulb, then hourly rate for fitter from time he leaves his house goes too garage gets van then to breakdown and back again. would be a very expensive headlight bulb if the driver couldnt/wouldnt/not allowed to change it.

Beat me to it.
Each to their own, personally i would not have called anyone out but carried on and changed the bulb when i could buy one if i didn’t carry spares, i do carry bulbs and fuses etc in my own lorry, luckily i have fog lights fitted so just pop them on to illuminate both sides of the vehicle with headlight equivalent brightness in the event of headlamp bulb blowing till convenient.
I know some companies won’t allow drivers to do bulb swaps and up to a point that’s understandable seeing the balls up some manage to make of such a simple task, headlight bulbs in upside down twin contact bulbs in single contact holders and vice versa, how these people manage their everyday tasks beats the hell outa me.
Probably £100 minimum for a local 1/2 hour call out, maybe double that and a bit more if some distance had to travelled, plus the cost of a gold plated bulb.
I changed one last Friday morning. It took 5 minutes. But then my boss gives us the toolkit/bulbkit with each wagon, and the ability and trust to do the job.
Still a coupla hundred notes seems perfectly reasonable for a bulb

Allow me to help.
I think some firms have these ‘driver not allowed to wipe his own arse’ policies because of dumbass agency drivers that can’t change a bulb without causing damage or setting themselves on fire.

Or perhaps its because some so called drivers think they are better than us mere mortals.

I don’t know what your “Beef” is with agency drivers, but comments like this make you look like a right prick. Yes there are some ■■■■ drivers out there, there are some ■■■■ agency drivers out there, but don’t tar them with the same brush.

I take a spool of tungsten filament and a glass blowing furnace with me everywhere. That way if a bulb ever blows I can just make my own. Whilst the steering wheel attendants would be on the phone whining for help I will have created a range of novelty glass bottle stoppers from the leftovers.
I’ve made a tool for changing them

In my first job as a driver i was expected to carry out essential maintenance And roadside repairs per se (this included winding off locked brakes, replacing airbags, strapping broken Steel springs to get the truck/trailer home) I used to do that for 200 a week top line and loved every minute of it.
What riles me is the lack of total respect you have for all agency drivers, ESPECIALLY the ones who drive for Stobarts!!! I was an agency driver AT stobarts and i find your comments inflamming and a personal insult
PS (your good for 9 pages now)
PPS (i now work full time at Stobarts haha)
I’ve got no beef with agency drivers, I just find that they’re quite easily wound up… so it’s easy pickings.
Their quick tempers are probably one of the reasons why they can’t find proper employment.
We call out for bulbs and believe the cost to be in the hundreds of pounds
I got my arse kicked a couple weeks ago being spotted changing a rear bulb in the yard, I carry a few spares. The maintence man doesn’t start till 4.00 and I would have been late for my first drop so I just changed it myself.
Apparently it’s rocket science and I’m just a driver. I do the driving they do the fitting
Compared to my last company where I’d change bulbs, fuses, airlines , repair wire breaks all the little odd bits and bobs. It’s a different world now
Seems to me that companys that pay call out for minor issues have too much money to waste, It would be better spent on a hours training for the drivers to allow them to change a bulb/fuse /airline etc.
Company I work for like you to do what you can when down the road…
This at La Jonquera Spain last week. Saved the boss a fortune
Take it to halfords, they will do it for a fiver

last firm i was with was old school and we did most of our own maintenance except major engine stuff for which we got a mobile mechanic in
Thing is times have changed, old days you went with dad uncle etc,or worked in yard and in away it was like an apprenticeship.
Now people who have no interest in vehicles of any sort can pay money pass test and get licence.
They have no interest in how things work or mechanical sympathy, its just a case of push that pedal move that leave an it does this or that.
