How many times did you try?

Hi chaps… had my 2nd fail on driving test today… don’t know what I - need now a bottle of grey goose a hug or a holiday… even the examiner said the driving is good but… 3 serious faults… the first attempt I hit the curb - i admit lack of experience. After that day i used half a tank of petrol in my car just to drive around the test routes and the routes we took to get more knowledge. But looks like still not enough…■■ I’m driving since 19 years lots of European countries… rented cars on holidays in unknown places… no problems… rented motorhomes few times… no problems. Just courious on your experience with driving test if you care to share? Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Passed my car on the first go with 5 minors. Took two attempts for my Class 2, hit a cone on the reverse in the first test, never made it to the road section. Second time around, passed for 6 minors. My Class 1 took 3 goes. First time in the artic, drove over a curb twice on test. Second time, never made it to the test centre due to being stuck in an accident. Passed the 3rd attempt that I took almost a year later with 2 minors.

Thanks Radar… how did you overcome your nerves after the first go? I hit a cone on reversing but carried on to the road test. I love reversing exercise done it no problems got video as well… on the test hit a cone■■? I was wondering was the track laid out the same■■? Never made a mistake with that… how many hour s did you drive before the test?

Car 2nd attempt cat C 2nd attempt

1st time B, C & C+E, but I guess that doesn’t help you!

All I can say is I have never let nerves get tthe better of me, I knew I could do it and just got on with it on each occasion.

1st both class c + c+e .keep trying and be possitive ,listen to the instructors …

Car 1st time

Extended test 1st time after ban ( car )

Class 2 1st time

Hoping Class 1 goes same when time comes

Your nerves probably getting the better of you. Try and chill beforehand )

Car 2nd time, rigid 1st time. Yea probably nerves getting the better of you. Try and get a good nights sleep the night before and eat well before your test. The brain needs food to concentrate fully. I practiced my bay parking and nailed it on my test, which consequently gave me the confidence to have a good road drive. If you make a mistake quickly erase it from your mind and don’t dwell on it or you’ll probably find you’ll make more. Good luck for the future mate

Car second attempt as i was a plonker on my first test and royally cocked it up, stupid errors trying to parallel park of all things.

C test first time pass not sure how many minors as it was back in 2003, 5 or 6 rings a bell but not sure why.

C+E first time pass and a clean sheet so no minors at all.

Pilots licence next lol

Car 2nd attempt, class 1 first go, in a time when you could go straight in on an artic and a lot cheaper!!

Car and bike 1st time. Which might have lulled me into feeling too confident. Cat C 3rd go :unamused: . It was [zb] or bust. I told myself if I failed the third go,i wasn’t throwing anymore money at it

Passed car, class 2 and class 1 first time. Don’t mean to come across as cocky but driving is the only thing I’ve ever been naturally good at. Every test I did I told myself that as long as I drove well I’d pass. Keep plugging away. You’ll get there in the end.

Best of luck,

Tony.

I know someone who took about seven attempts before passing Cat C, but he got there.

OK, I’ll be the first of the no fail brigade to post something useful!

The answer to you dilemma is revealed here, as it shows intensity, pressure and the end result, Nerves!
You’re placing TOO much importance on it, and not seeing what it really is…

ANY OTHER DRIVE! :open_mouth:

You’re the only factor that decides if it goes well or bad is you!
And that’s defined by how relaxed you are!

I was nervous before car and cat C passe both first time, thing that stuck with me me me c test was if you make a mistake just correct it, and you a still still learner until you pass so your not expected to be perfect (major faults excl).
On the day of my cat c I just went believing I could do it and just needed to take this person on a drive to be signed off. Yes a little nervous but I guess luck went with me also had a nice chatty examiner which helped, and my instructor was an ex examiner.

You will do it!

Wait till your out on your own then it’s time to ■■■■ yourself

First time
1978 car but done in a 7.5 tonner
1988 CE (old HGV class 1 artic)
1997 car advanced
1998 LGV advanced

Do the nerves make you stutter? (just kidding)

They do move the cones! When I was doing my training, I struggled with judging the length of the vehicle. My trainer gave me a tip and said that when the front wheel of the unit was level with the cone, the trailer would be perfectly in the marked zone. However, he also warned me that sometimes the cone is moved, so don’t rely on using it as a reference point. Guess what - the cone had been moved when I did my test and I forgot and still used it as a reference. Luckily my trailer only touched the barrier and didn’t knock it over, so I was ok even though I thought I’d failed because of it. I questioned the examiner at the end of the test and he said as long as you don’t move or knock the barrier over you are ok.
So anyone about to do their test beware as they do move the cones!

Passed car first time (December 2014)

Passed 7.5t on 3rd attempt (September 2015) 11 minors. Instructor let me off. Said coming back for 4th test would be no good due to nerves.

Passed class 2 first time (March 2016) 11 minors.

Passed class 1 (September 2016) 3 minors.

Nerves are annoying but to be expected. If you see the examiner marking something down remeber it’s not for something you’ve just done it’s for something done previously on test.

I think the only way to beat nerves is to go in confident that you can drive the bloody thing and with ease. Take deep breaths if you feel it getting to you and slow everything down but not to a standstill haha.

If the examiner is saying that the drive is good then means you know how to drive the truck, so look on the postives and build on that. Personally I always get very nevrse with any exam, so try and limit the pressure I have on myself. For example on every driving test I have done, my family or friend didn’t know about them or in the case of the bus and Cat. C that I was even learning to drive them - this stopped people asking how it went or wishing me good luck, phoning up on the day etc.

For myself I passed my car test 1st time, but came very near to failing on the perral parking - Started to turn the wrong way and told I couldn’t start again so I looked a saw a gap on the other side and parked there. It was a very nice small road so made it possible.

Bus test I failed first time, tried to get pass a parked truck and forgot our mirrors are about the same level. All that happened was the bus mirror moved about 2 cm inwards but it counted as a RTC - I was kicking myself on that one as it was about 500 yards from the test centre.

Second bus test passed but my nerves made me forgot what colour shirt I was wearing, and at one point I said to the exaimer I was going to pull over to reset my mind for a minture, passed it with 7 minors or something like that.

Cat. C test again failed the first one, on the hill start I checked all my mirrors blind spots etc, started to pull away and there was car which had come flying around the concer, as soon as I saw him I stopped but he was already on the wrong side of the road. That was my only fault on the test apart from making up my own test rotue at one point where I forgot I am not on a bus route.

Second test was alot better, had three minors, two from the same roundabout which was undue hasstion and obverstion when not wanting to seem like I am forcing my way out. The other was a mini roundabout for obverstion I was taking the 2nd exit, line of 6 cars or so coming from that exit all signaling left so started to move, but someone turned right. tried to stop but the car was already slowed right down so we both carried on.

One thing I did find out on the second Cat. C test was the examiner I had did not mark anything down until we got back to the test centre, when she got in the clipbroad when into the side door pocket and she seat back enjoyed the drive. Whereas the first examiner kept looking at the paper work which didn’t overally help.
