been in a few RDCs over the years and overheard one or two what i’d call “old skool” drivers talking to another driver how they just missed the MS Herald of Free Enterprise on its fatefull trip, they’d gotten held up for some reason or another.
so just curious who on here just missed that (extremely over booked) ferry, and what was your reason for arriving late and not making the ferry crossing.
quite possible i know someone truck drivers may well of actually, ‘just missed it’ but to me there seems to be lots of them about.
and what reason have you heard why a driver missed it■■?
Or the other one you keep hearing “I was in SAS before I became a driver” yer right oh if you was in the “SAS” I don’t think you woul be driving trucks some how and you would not be broadcasting it.
I was working for a company called Eldridge.and i was running with another of our drivers who had his son with him during half term, he asked me to swap because he was worried about his son missing school, so i agreed to let him take my place…he caught the ill fated Free Enterprise…he and his son did survive…but there was story attached;
When he boarded the ferry, he asked for a cabin, there wasnt any, so decided to go below deck and sleep in the truck…he was woken up by some very loud banging, which happened to be one of the crew trying to get the rams to work, which were attached to the bow doors…and the rest as they say is history.
I too was in the S.A.S. by the way…along with Chris Hooper to name but one, only thing is, our s.a.s. was a transport company based in Bromley in Kent.
Rumour has it that the owner ( Ruby ) started the business with a guy who was in the S.A.S. ( a friend ) and after the business started to grow, she bought him out.
I would have been on it but I missed it because I didn’t have a LGV licence at that time. But if I had thought about becoming a driver sooner I would definitely been there. I was just lucky at the time.
isnt/wasnt there a driver about with a sticker above the drivers/passengers door saying ‘Herald of Free Enterprise survivor’ with the date it happened, or something similar?,i know im not imagining it as i saw him a couple of times, i think he was in Super Space Cab or Magnum. Sad, i thought, as he obviously wants attention so he can tell everyone about it.

Well, we shouldn’t really make generalised statements about the state of mental health of people who were on that crossing, just be thankful that we weren’t.
I missed it just because the Chinese took their time stamping my papers on exiting China after I had delievered chopsticks in Bejing.
I also just missed the fire in the Blanc, I was the last truck through, I saw the smoke in my mirrors but thought it was my smokey FH16 700 that I was testing for Volvo and yes youve guessed it I was the one who broke down in the desert in Saudi with the Michelin men on my mirror arms and when I came back to the truck everyone was praying to them thinking they where my Gods protecting my truck. I am sorry to say though that the rumours I was in the SAS for 7 years ARE NOT TRUE it was only 5 years the other two years I was in MI6 my code name was 008.

I was on the point of becoming the first driver to drive to the moon but I had the wrong permit and I had run out of running money.
Harry if you do get the right permit and more running money make sure you put some petrol in your diesel tanks, when you get above 5 miles from earth its extremely cold and your diesel will freeze, I know coz it happened to me on a multi drop to Mars , Saturn and Uranus. Luckily for me the space shuttle stopped and gave me a gallon
You may well have been Gardun that depends on what year though I only did 2 years and they just pass the number on to the next guy, I personnaly know of at least 4 007’s

Your stories are nothing, I was that Moldovan stripper who was sucking off the captain when his ship hit the rocks.
If you’ve got an elephant, then I’ve got a box you can put it in.
If you’ve been to Tenerife, I’ve been to Elevenerife.
No Harry not me thats been to Tenerife in a truck (to short a trip for me) but I know a driver on here that has been and has the pics too, Although I have been there plenty of times on hols and love the place.
I was going to put on the “who goes where” post that Ive got two drops next week in Capetown but didnt want to get any jealous replies
