I’ve been an Apple user for over 20 years and I wouldn’t be seen dead with a PC!

A Mac is a Personal Computer so it is a PC. :stuck_out_tongue:

I assume you mean you wouldn’t be seen dead with a Personal Computer running Microsoft products? :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Not quite like that Neil.

My iMac will happily sit here running Windows alongside it’s own operating system!

And it is this which has made Apple the biggest technology company in the world. Bigger even than Microsoft!

Not just clever marketing has got them to this point though. Good products have done it in the main part - I’ve been an Apple user for over 20 years and I wouldn’t be seen dead with a PC!

LOL…

Are you sure about that?

I only ask, since not only Microsoft ( a lowly 114th in the world when it comes to size), but also Hewlett Packard, Samsung, Verizon, Siemens, Hitachi, Sony, Toshiba, Nokia to name but a few, might take issue with your stance. Apple whilst undoubtedly a large and succesful company actually rank 129th in the world for size. In terms of profitability, Microsoft, HP, Samsung, et al all wee all over Apple. Microsoft being the 8th most profitable company in the world.

You seem to have had the full Jobsian mind wipe. Well done.

Don’t think I’ve been brainwashed - I was using Apple computers long before they were marketed as a major brand in this country, a time when I was able to make my own mind up!

Killsville is just making typical Apple phanboy ā€œApple’s are better than PCsā€ comments which always crack me up as they’re usually followed by ā€˜evidence’ about how much better they are, how well they’re made, how they don’t suffer viruses, how they don’t crash, how they last 10 times longer, etc etc etc etc.

And it’s all BS…

Well it’s true!

Except the last bit!

OK, average MAC is better than average normal PC, but for the money you spend on MAC you can buy really powerful non-apple computer…

Man, this man is a true believer… But what can he know about it if he’s not interested in normal PCs - he’s using apple for 20 years or so…

Looked, and found it:

if one goes by the price-to-earnings ratio.

This confirms my words: Apple is not worth as much, but it sells dearly

Apple was my choice for home - pity my employers did not follow suit! (Read that as ā€œForced to work with PC’sā€!) So 20 years experience of both Orys!

I’m not quite sure - it depends which report you read.

Microsoft has the higher turnover and profit, but Apple has the greater share value. Perhaps it’s just that Steve Jobs’ Apple is turning more of it’s profits into assets than Bill Gates’ Microsoft.

Either way, it’s probably best we all stick to something less complicated, like driving lorries!

But you don’t BUY non-apple PC’s for your employer: they do it themesves.

Propably they just did the math and bought the one, which offers better value for money…

(although they are propably victims of yet another myth and therefore paid for Windows instead of fitting it with Linux )

Is that the same as buying the cheapest?

Yes, that how it works.

If you will sell 5000 items per year, each will cost you 100 and you will sell it at 102, you will make 10 000 profits.

If I will do 1000 items per year, each will cost me 100, but I will also spend 5 on advertisement and manage to find 1000 fans, who will be ready to pay me 155 for each of them, I will do 50 000 profit

Off course, my example is very simplified, but this is where Apple’s strenght is going from.

Still, we all have to admit that this business model goes well and Apple growth is enourmous.

But there are two reasons why I don’t buy any Apple stuff:

  1. I don’t like to pay more than a thing is worth. The apple toys are good, but they are overpriced. You can buy other stuff of similar (or better) quality for less (example: I bought my gf mp3 player with a small screen you can watch movies for a price of the cheapest i-pod on sale…, mp3 player works really well for years and she’s happy with that. And this is only one example, I have plenty of electronic stuff at home (as all of us do in XXI century, none of this is made by apple, all works really well, and are compatible with each other).
  2. I don’t like that Apple is enclosed and suggest you what you want to do. You can’t put an memory card in your i-phone, you can’t send pictures to other fone via bluetooth, you can’t even replace battery… If Apple thinks you don’t need flash, you can’t use it.

Ok, I understand their point that flash is too energy-consuming. But I can disable it in my phone if I am not happy with it. On Apple, it is really hard to enable it.

Off course, you can hack it and, for example, run android on your i-phone. That’s what one of my friends did (for fun), but it turned up that batteries last for really short time. Ok, obviously android with flash is more consuming than Apple OS, but, hey, how then other phones, like mine (late :frowning:) LG can run on android with flash for much longer than i-phone?

If my friend would be bored again, he could install i-phone os on his LG phone, that would really show us, which one has better batteries.

See, Apple does what Microsoft used to do. They try to set the rules, and bound you to the company. If youy have i-phone, you have to use dedicated accesories (as apple do not allow third party manufacturers to make accesories to Apple without paying really dear fees), you are supposed to download music in apple formats from apple itunes shop, and if you want to do something your i-phone can’t do, apple convict you that you don’t need that.

There was an old joke some years ago:

  • how many Microsoft workers are needed to change the bulb?
  • None, Bill Gates says that Darkness will be the new standard in modern buildings.

This is what apple now does. And the flash incident was only start of it, you will see.

And yes, I used Mac PC’s a lot. On my university we had mostly Linux computers, but there was also one Windows lab and one Mac lab. The last one was almost always empty, so, as I need silence to work, I was working there (via ssh on my linux server :stuck_out_tongue:)

killsville:

Sometimes it can be, but this is not a rule.

I’ll give you an example: I bouth my car, it has Daihatsu badge. I can buy the same car with Subaru badge on it, but I will have to pay nearly 3000 pounds more for it’s basic version.

OK, Subaru basic version has two more airbags then mine, which is not a basic version, but if I ordered mine with these two extra airbags, it would be still much cheaper Subaru one specified exactly the same, except that I got 1.3 engine, and the basic Subaru has 1.0.

So which one you will prefere:

This one, with 1.0 engine at 11700?

Or this one, with 1.3 engine at 10100?

This is what I call better value for money.

Off course, if you value having Subaru badge on your car, it might be worth for you to pay nearly 20% of the price extra for it. But I just wanted a good car, and I have it cheaper.

It’s the same with Apple, except that apart of badge, you have specific design (which is cool, I have to admit) and different OS. But all the stuff under the cover is exactly the same, you can go to the computer shop and order exactly the same computer to be build for you, except that in standard tower, with normal keyboard and some third-brand monitor. And then you can compare the prices.

Just another topic drift: it was really funny when I was looking for a small car (on scrappage scheme) and I was considering Citroen C1. Several people, Polish and Scottish, advised me to do not buy that as it’s a French crap, and to buy Toyota Aygo instead as it’s a ā€œdecent, japanese car, they don’t break down all the time as the French onesā€.

I really liked the disbelief on their faces when I was showing them that it’s actually the same car with different badges (and that Peugot 107 as well) and they are all made at the same factory in Czech Republic

orys:

Orys, Your posts and your English is very good. BUT YOU’RE NOT AMERICAN.
