How good a tool is google street view!

I find myself using this more and more anyone else use it? Lets you get a lay of the land the night before , if your going somewhere and cant remember a bridge height you can instantly be transported there to see the actual sign.

My AA truck atlas is gathering dust now :grimacing:

I use it quite often now for looking into ladies bedrooms  some you win, some you lose

Often handy for checking overnight parking places out too

Get a new Audi A8 and really see the difference, google maps, streetview and satnav combined in the dashboard, the shape of things to come.

I use it all of the time checking on drops before I get there, I know it’s not bang up to date but gives you an idea of what you’re going to be faced with also what you’re looking for before you get there…worth it’s weight in gold imo

Really smart all this new technology, my car just called me to say it had arrived at the destination I was planning for this morning, but I forget to set the alarm and am still in bed!! :open_mouth: :unamused:

Streetview, google, yell, scobbler, & pocketgps world are all useable apps on the iPhone and is why I decided to get an iPhone in the 1st place.
It’s very handy for checking locations, delivery addresses etc before you commit to turning down that narrow side street

I must admit that I use my iPhone a lot to find delivery addresses. I’m sure everybody gets those delivery notes with incomplete details!

As long as when I am away driving , the local thieving ā€˜person’ is not doing his homework on how my street and house looks… There are always plus and minus points.

Any potential theif could get the same view just by walking down your street.

I am really amazed how strong is this myth of i-somethings being the only things of this kind…

I had all this in my LG phone, and it was half price of an i-phone, and accessories were half price, and I can use bluetooth to transfer pictures to another people phones without paying for sending them as a messages… And I can install any application compatible with it, not only these ones accepted by Apple… And it was using standard microSD cards, and I don’t needed any special software, was just plugging it into my (linux) computer and it was seen as a extra storage device…

Same with that i-pod. In Metro there used to be (I am no longer taking bus to work, so don’t know if it’s still there) a column asking famous people what they have in their i-pods…

How much apple paid for that being called ā€œin their i-podsā€ not ā€œin their mp3 playersā€?

Iphone is not a bad toy, but it seems to me that it’s rather creating needs by advertisements than answering real people needs:

Used it the other day in Park Royal trying to find somewhere reasonably quiet to park up with no double yellows!

ANY smart phone is capable of doing the tasks listed previously, I only got the iphone as Im able to put it on a business tariff and pay the bill thru my Ltd Co, so its a legitamate business expense. If I was on PAYE i wouldnt ever consider such a toy and use it at my expense, for someone elses business, as I wouldn`t be able to claw back the cost

Yep I use it all the time now, especially with a tight drop you can plan ahead, got a double drop in Bristol on Monday and the second drop is in a tight residential area with only two ways in, thanks to google street view I know that one way in is a no go due to a 11ft 3 bridge, I also know where I’m going to leave the trailer to save the hassle of dragging it round the narrow side streets

Hope they will keep on updating it as scenery does change over time

It took a bloke from Poland to see sense.

I was tricked into this Apple malarkey with iTunes and DRM, AAC and MPEG-4 when all my half dozen Nokias have music players which are much simpler to use and I don’t even need to use bloody headphones.

I use a Nokia E71 and it does everything I want a phone to do, and I have a spare Nokia to time perfect boiled eggs in the kitchen.

about 2 months ago I had to sort getting some traffic lights removed up in lancashire for a very wide load to pass - 3 minutes of talking to the bloke sat in his office in preston, me in mine dahn saath, and we had t’job sorted - we could even see where one set had been ā€˜sleeved’ previously saving some work and expense.

it wouldn’t work every time of course, but before streetview it’d be a guaranteed day out and 400+ miles driving to get the same result - marvellous tool IMO

Using it as much as possible, it’s great the night before you can pick out the landmarks/low bridges/entrances, leaves you free on the day to focus on the driving.

Been in east london a lot lately, it’s been invaluable, getting an idea of just how small and tight these places actually are.

I’ve got google maps app on my phone (not an iphone, cheap samsung PAYG job cost Ā£40) which I also use a lot to pinpoint the postcode, and combine it with the truckers close up map to avoid the low bridges and weight limits.

We obviously managed before, but all this stuff (particularly streetview) takes a lot of the stress away.

Although, when you find the place and it looks like a nightmare (maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=e … 39,0,4.23) you may not sleep all that well.

I went to the above the other day, if it had been up to me based on my limited experience I would never have taken an artic up there, but I got in, turned around, tipped and back out again. Mostly thanks to the guys in the yard who were well rehearsed on how to get a truck in an out, millimetres to spare at times :open_mouth: . Satisfying drop in the end though

I wonder where Orys has got his iPhone spec from?

Or is my iPhone 3G a special model?

The iPhone does do what most people want, hence why they have sold millions. When it stops doing that, Apple will develop something better. (Current teething problems with iPhone 4 excepted!)

I used street view for the first time about 4 weeks ago when I needed to check out somewhere in central London. The next day I felt almost smug as I confidently drove down and round some streets I’d never been to, yet knew exactly what to expect as if I’d been driving in London for years. Since then I use it for nearly every new location. I’ve dazzled the odd passenger too: I let them know that where we’re going is new to me, then I just drive there with no map or anything and pick out the correct entrance as if I’ve been there before and tell them I have divine instincts.

Yes, thats what all fans of i-toys say.

I had this several times, we make pictures on the party and then everybody exchange the pics using bluetooth except i-phone users, who are trying to explain us why, despite that they cannot join us, i-phone is still better

The most important reason why they have sold milions is brilliant advertising and creating demand. For what else you would be queuing under the shop all night to get it first? Cannot you really buy it three days later?

I can tell you how it works: there is a big poster in front of the shop saying ā€œOnly two new Ipods leftā€ and on the back of the shop, where I am delivering, lies about 30 ipods…

That is only one trick how they build demand… Because if you see ā€œonly two leftā€ you go and buy, as you don’t want to miss the bargain…
