A few cold calls to company’s doing the type of work i want to do,or knock on doors, cv’s job(joke center) and other brokers, waste of time IMO
"No mate, an 02 plate CF 6wheeler. Very low mileage (owned from new and one of the first “new” CFs in Oxfordshire. They’ll probably never sell it as it carries over 16t. Or I’ll drive their 09 plate CF 8wheeler. Or the JCB 3cx. Or the JCB 360. Or even the mini digger.

Sounds OK hope it’s all good! I quite like that sort of work a fella I sub for on a day rate gets me on the 360 pulling out Type 1 or loading myself with muck etc(not good enough on the 360 to pull out footings or drainage & get the levels spot on though
)
My mate gave me his bosses number, told me to call him NOW, if I wanted the job…
Phoned him at 12:30 on the Friday afternoon, was in his office at 14:00, and started at 05:30 Monday morning…
Being the proud owner of a Group C licence (paid for by me), on leaving my previous, non-driving job back in 2006 I signed up with a local agency and made it clear I was looking for a way into permanent employment. One of the first places they sent me offered me a permanent position after a month or so of temping. I accepted their offer.
Three months later the customer pulled the plug on that particular contract, so I moved within the company to another contract at another site. Less than 12 months later, same happened again, so I moved within the company to yet another contract. Just a few months later and they lost that contract (can you see a pattern here?).
I was offered the choice of two jobs on different contracts this time, but with the “economic downturn” then in full swing, I took the option that didn’t involve retail/shop deliveries. A little over 12 months later and, once again the company lost the contract. This time I took the offer of being “TUPEd” over to the new employer instead. This turned out to be not such a bad move as completely out of the blue they offered to put me through my C+E. Naturally, I accepted this. Still there five years later.
Do I love the job? No. But I value the pension scheme and the fact that although the work can be physically demanding compared to some jobs, the hours are easy and I’m simply left to get on with it.
Went to pick dad up from the pub and went it to get him and got chatting to his drinking buddies, turned out 1 was a TM for a local company. He asked me was I looking for a new job and I started with him on the Monday. Filled the application forms out etc etc a week later lol.
First time I rang up after a failed interview due to being messed about by the company, got an interview the same day. Had my assessment the following week then was sent down to Lutterworth the same day
Second time, I rang up after being told to come into work for 8 as it was vital to be in and ended up being stuck in the warehouse Was asked when I could start. Two weeks to the day I’m back in the job I was.
Hope to be taken on full time soon as I’ve been asked if id take a full time position if offered so we’ll see
Cheers
Jonny
I was doing some agency work for Asda at Portbury five and a half years ago and got chatting to a Culina driver who was on the bay next to the trailer I was hooking up to and he said we’re opening a depot in Avonmouth in a couple of months time, so after that made a call and put an application in and the rest is history as they say.
Last driving job i was approached by the manager whilst tipping after showing bit of interest in the company… Asked if i had enough time to have an interview whilst the lorry was being loaded…
Merrily not wanting a driving job again, I let my hgv and psv licences expire at 45.
I ended up working for a main forklift truck franchise (since bought by the main dealer) as a warehouseman/yardman and helping engineers (fitters) until a 26t turned up in the yard and the boss said here is £45 go get your medical … I refuse, we talk money I then agree (quickly) and I love it plus already been told on top of the yearly cost of living rise I am up for my review and I will be getting another rise.
I may moan but I have done a wide variety of jobs but found one I never wanted to do again but to my surprise I love my job.
Got ‘let go’ last Friday, phoned a company on Monday morning, got asked to go in and see them that morning. 5 minute chat, then: ‘When can you start?’ ‘Now?’ ‘Give us chance to get the unit valeted, see you in the morning.’
Started back here in 2006 - used to work here 1987-1991
Saw a job advert on Indeed and it had the transport manager’s direct email address. I made an inquiry (without attaching a cv) and was invited for a driving assessment. So I agreed to the assessment and sent my cv. I passed the assessment, and was called for an interview. I’ve just finished a 3 day induction and begin my shifts next week.
It’s a company I’ve wanted to work for for a long time, and it was as simple as that.
Dejected with Agencies; I was scouting around and had heard that the company I was with was after drivers, so I visited them. I had previously been warned that they wanted high standards and didn’t expect it to go anywhere. However, they offered me a shift doing something I hadn’t expected; nights and towing a ‘special trailer’ for a client and so got the job. Much later on it changed to regular loads, but I’m still there…
the company im with only takes drivers on if they are recommended by one o the other drivers ,the next driver up the ladder from me has been there 15yrs,the others 25+ yrs.
The boss used to see me coming home on a thursday night and away again on a sunday (parked up on the main drag),and liked that the unit was always clean and tidy.
Well i used tae drink with some o the drivers and when they found out i had Permanent Residency(didnt need a work permit) i was asked to come in one friday to have a look around and was told the rate o pay ,home every night no weekends (well 99.5%)and the yard is at the end o my street…no more hr and a half drive to work on a sunday if i didnt get the motor home on a thursday.
Was told i had to learn to operate a redi mix truck for a season before i went on the btrains hauling aggregate soooo after getting over the
shock o driving a 82 reg twin stick mixer and some o the HUGE 6x8 mixers, then upgrading to a 99reg train lifes good …had a few real bad moments this year but
hopfully im there for 10more yrs till i retire.
