Muckaway:
The job I’m in now (until Friday) I did before and was asked to go back but as a regular driver. My new job, I temp’d for them when out of work and was told I’d be given first refusal when a job came up. Two years on they kept their word.
just be going with my dad on my days off work etc put myself through my test, not long after I passed my C+E his boss offered me a job… He’s now my boss too been doing it since January and love every minute
Driver-Once-More:
right place, at home. Now a carer
^^^^^^Ditto, caring for my wife. The money aint much but I get to legally sleep with my gaffer!
Pete.
The most important job of all IMHO… moving stuff about in trucks pales into insignificance when our loved ones need us… well done to you both.
Edit: apologies if this comes over as a tad patronising
Not patronising at all Dave, it can be tough at times though. Been doing it for 12 years now. Regarding jobs, I worked for Tilcon as a fitter and then moved across to driving when a vacancy became available several years later. Then a local haulier who knew me well had his son leave the business so I went working for him as driver ■■■ fitter as it suited me better. After five years things changed due to quarry policy and I was made redundant, then the Mrs set me on full time!!! Being at work for long hours I hadn’t realised just how bad she was, quite an eye opener for me.

Yeah OK! must of been offered a new Hino?
No mate, an 02 plate CF 6wheeler. Very low mileage (owned from new and one of the first “new” CFs in Oxfordshire. They’ll probably never sell it as it carries over 16t. Or I’ll drive their 09 plate CF 8wheeler. Or the JCB 3cx. Or the JCB 360. Or even the mini digger.
Saw advert in the local paper, phoned up next day, had interview couple of days later and was offered it there and then. Still doing the same job 35 years later, but with a better truck!!!
Another British driver called me one day to say he been offered a job near to me but had turned it down because he lived too far away , he told me the details and asked if I’d be interested ? Hell yeah , made contact with the company later that day and was made the offer subject to back ground checks etc .
spent about 18 mths on and off on agency with them, kept my head down, didn’t moan, did’nt break anything,
so when they were looking for more full timers I was already known to them, that was 2 yrs ago now,
hav’nt looked back
A friend worked there and put my name forward when a job come up left and went to canada come back due to personal problems got asked to do a couple of days holiday cover and am still there 18 months later.
Got my job thro my step dad who at the time had his own outfit doing swiss twice a week. Himself and his other driver. He paid for my class 2 and was going to do class 1 so as to take over from him doing the swiss with his other driver. But before that happened, an old work colleague of my step dad approached him saying the firm he works for wanted to do their own in house transport and as my step dad was a pro CPC holder, can he be transport manager and sort out the O licence. Anyway step dad said ok so long as you take on my 2 drivers and buy my outfit too. That was way back in 2001 and ive been with the company ever since and I’ve never looked back. Considering that back then, I had only just got my class 2 and had not yet turned the wheel of anything bigger than a 7 1/2 tonner, so no experience etc and I would be carry hazardous chemicals day in day out. Now, out of all the drivers that were taken on back then, im the only original driver left. Certainly seen a few changes in that time too…
