How am I ever going to live THIS down?

So I passed my class 2 end of January of this year.

Have just got my first job with an agency as I did try going for my class 1 but failed tests twice on reverse.

Anyway, my first shift started at midnight on Friday. I had a run which consisted of 2 drops.

The 1st drop was a bit nervous as I had to open the unit up alone. Dropped of several pallets.

I imagined someone/couple of guys pouncing on me. Everything was so quiet.

Well no-one did pounce - think the rain kept them away.

Then onto my second drop. Had an hour wait outside while the one member of staff turned up to open up.

So strange waiting around at 3am. Locked both doors. Just incase. Anyone else do this or am i a woos?

Done the drop. Had 2 pallets to put on.

Only thing left to do was fill up the fuel tank as they like to have full tanks for the next driver.

So what did i do wrong? Well…

I put diesel in the ad blue tank.

Yes. You read that right. How? You might ask.

Well easy when your a ■■■■■■■■ like me.

I have only ever had 3.5t vans and on my learning class 2 truck it had no ad blue tank.

So i thought the blue inner stopper was some sort new thing to stop over flowing. I really dont know what i was thinking. I just held the nozzle to the hole. Pmpl.

I have had cars with lpg and that fitment is a bit weird so this was just another thing to figure out.

I put about £10 of diesel in before it started to spit it back out. I guess i was tired and being the 1st shift and worrying about what directions and protocol of things were just got to me in the end.

I rang one of the staff. They sent for the recovery truck while i had a lift back to the yard which was just a mile down the road.

So my second shift is tonight and guess i will never live this down. I had expected to be called to say they didnt want me back for making such a rookie error. Thats not happened so far.

Please tell me someone else has done this■■?

They invited you back for a second shift? :open_mouth: WOW!

But seriously, you are not the first driver to do this, and you won’t be the last. Any driver who tells you they have made a ■■■■ up of fairly serious proportions at some point in their driving career is lying… That being said yours is special and should definately be bragged about to every driver you meet

Just thank your lucky stars you are on as an agency man, otherwise I reckon you’d be given many number plates with “Ad Blue” to stick in your windscreen

That’s quality pal!

Reminds me of the 7 times I’ve done it! :open_mouth:

And as F-reds says, we have all cocked up at some point in one way or another, just not like that!

Think you need to close down this account, and set yourself up a new one with a more apt user name!

Its a long time from January doing all the walk around checks etc and all fresh in your head of what to do.

I had no training for the digital tacho, or the tail lift that goes under the truck, or all the different switches in the truck.

Was my 1st time driving an automatic class 2. passed my test in a manual.

did drive a class one for a bit when i tried going for that licence but that was months ago. so was concerned about driving the automatic. was also much bigger than the one i learnt in. so i had a lot going on in my head all through the shift.

thats all i can blame it on.

if i could change my username i would, lol.

guess i am going to get some ribbing when i go in tonight!!!

Had you started the engine after you filled it up and before you rang them?

lifestartsat40:

You can’t change them on here, but you can set up a new account and just let this one die…
But that’s your call, however it would help us remember you! :grimacing:

We’ll accept that it’s because you had a lot going on mate, but we will still take the ■■■■ when possible!

cman:

I realised when i went to put the cap back on and on the rail running along the length of the truck there was a sticker saying " Ad Blue only. No diesel."

I rang them straight away.

They rang someone who was going to come out to drain it and refill with the ad blue but they decided to take it back to flush it all out. The tank is going to come off and be cleaned. Thats all i know.

They did mention that the ad blue would probably be slushy as i put just over a tenner of fuel in.

To be fair I guess it’s not that bad then, I doubt they’d have invited you back if you’d driven it before realising

Whilst I’ve never put diesel in the adblue tank (impossible in our yard) I did bend a tail lift something proper.

so whats going to happen with diesel in an adblue tank in details?

Priest:

It reacts with the adblue I believe. Plus since adblue is injected into the hot exhaust gases the diesel would ignite in the exhaust system potentially causing thousands of Pounds of engine damage.

How did you do that?

I’ve done this drop for over a year and a half, reverse onto bay with my tail lift out.

Ha ha quality. I wouldn’t worry too much about it though. S**t happens. And lets face it, you won’t make the same mistake twice.

I wouldn’t worry I’ve seen people Put tfr is audi diesels before now adamant that it was diesel dispute me saying it wasn’t 25 litres later one started up it cleaned the engine extremely well [GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]

When i worked for one of the big breakdown companies, i went out to a women who have filled the radiator bottle with fuel [emoji14] & another who had filled the engine with oil all the way up to the filler hole on top of engine & wonders why i didn’t start

You certainly are not the first, we had a driver or drivers mate do the exact same thing, neither would admit who did it, they both blamed each other. Neither got any more work from us after that.
Cost a fair whack of money as far as I recall, truck Sat in yard for weeks while the hire company and our company debates who was doing the work, then had to have the tank removed and replaced and lines replaced too in the end.

We also had someone put water in the oil and wrecked the engine in a hire truck.

We have had people put red diesel in the white tank as well.

I’m sorry but it is a ridiculous mistake to make, the nozzle won’t fit, it usually has a sticker saying as blue no diesel and must be an absolute pain in the area to get diesel into the as blue tank.

For god’s sake if you don’t know go and ask someone for help.

Lastly I hope this is a wind up but knowing it has been done at our place sadly I don’t think it is a wind up.

i feel for you mate, i’d say this is another example that the current system of preparing new drivers for the real life is not working really, not that its an excuse thought, learn your lesson and carry on :sunglasses: :unamused:

I’m really hoping this thread is taking the urea to be honest lol
