Hourly wage.

Is it me or is the hourly pay going down? I can earn more driving a flt. I thought a shortage was looming. I had a agency try to tell me that class 1 and class 2 pay was pretty much the same now. He then went on to say he was struggling for class 1 drivers. I did not take up his offer, but started looking at jobs and he was right… NOT much difference in pay at all. Might not bother with class 1 anymore. Do others not use their class1 for this reason?

Hourly pay, holiday pay going up,weekly, yearly, hours, bonuses going down ,hours being no bad thing ,that’s my experience at the moment .

In this area, HGV class one via agencies is typically paying between £10 to £13 hour depending on type of work. FLT drivers are doing well if they can achieve much more than £7 hour. Even seen some FLT jobs advertised at NMW. I was going to get a FLT license myself, but hard to justify with those pay rates. :unamused:

A lot depends if you have skills other than HGV driving or it £6.50 jobs everywhere.

Come on, in the modern world, in most modern companies, you’re not paid on what pieces of paper you have stuck in the wall at home, or sitting in your wallet. You are paid by the value you and your job adds to your particular company. This can mean adding value/skills/customer service or a mixture of the above.

So yes I’m sure there’s plenty of jobs out there that are class 2 that offer just as much a well paid class 1 job, because those class 2 drivers earn it in that particular job. Equally I’m sure there are class 1 jobs out there that pay as little as a crap paying class 2 job. Because they don’t earn it.

Sticking an +E on your license, doesn’t automatically make the job harder and therefore better paid. Although to some on here a +E, turns there motors into killing machines, and they, the drivers are the only bullfighter in town with the talent to keep their beasts in line!

To sum up. I don’t care what the hourly rate is, I care what the job entails, combined with an hourly rate.

all said by a 2nd class driver, who doesn’t complain about his pay

There’s an element of truth there, with what that agency consultant was telling you.

Traditionally, an HGV 1 driver will earn a mere £1 more p/h than the HGV 2 driver, at the same agency. With some agencies, they have no pay rates set in stone for what licence category the driver is utilising for any given job, as they are negotiated directly with their customer. Needless to say, agency pay rates vary according to the general supply and demand in their local area.

As for the driver’s working for companies; some HGV 2 driver’s are better paid than HGV 1 driver’s. Some transit van driver’s earn more than HGV 1 driver’s!

I’ve even worked for a company, where the FLT driver’s were earning a higher rate than the HGV driver’s (C+E). It all boils down to what any perspective employer deem’s necessary ( it’s usually the least amount possible ) to pay people to do their job’s. So, if HGV and FLT driver’s are willing to work for ■■■■ money, they’ll get just that.

The class 2 drivers in our place only need to get 90mins OT per week and they make more than class 1 drivers. Quite easy to achieve. Often thought of asking to get put on an 18t when the chance comes up.[emoji12]

damoq - Is that because of the physicality of the Class C work?

As I see Bidvest, Brakes, etc. offering wages above quite a lot of some Class C+E work…

I guess as far as the employers are concerned, they only offer what it will take to get some interest in a job. So if they have a glut of people only wanting to do C+E, and no one wanting to do basic Class C, that’s what is going to happen…

P.S. I hate this C and C+E, can’t we go back to class 1 & 2 :imp:

Not really. The only difference is that the 18t get deliveries that we cant get into with artics. Class 2 drivers actually do less collections and deliveries than artic drivers per day in our place. We’ve actually got a couple of class 2 drivers who have got their class 1 licence but wont drive artics cos its not worth the extra hassle.

We’re all on the same rate at our place

How about this:

HGV driver’s earn a poor rate of pay and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Reason being; HGV driver’s are 10 a penny!

How about this; man joins forum with express intention of “stirring things up a bit”, he does indeed proceed to stir things up a little, but gradually just gets ignored, man then becomes pet poodle to Bach Home (who incidentally does actually appear to be capable of independent thought and deed) by adding +1 to each of his posts, man then just appears needy.
