I used to have daily contact with both of these hauliers in my time at Tipton Transport.
Harry Horn was a real gent, always a pleasure to deal with. His sister? Mavis was quite a character too. Their trucks were always well turned out, and the drivers good workers and friendly. Sadly it appears they ceased trading some years ago, but it would be good to see some photo’s of their trucks online to jog memories.
Kenny and Billy at CPS were also characters!!! Their dark blue DAF’s with yellow writing were a common sight in our yard… and they were easy to load up to Scotland… think they worked out of an aluminium plant at Sanquar■■?
Again - I hope someone has some pics they can post…
Andy…
hi andy,
i did a year for CPS early 90,s, 1-15 drops with sheets and ropes, only 30ft trls though, remember going into tipton to load a few times when down brum, billy robson (roppa) is in the office now at a company in cramlington , kenny cooper back driving now.
their is a few photos of the CPS lorrys on the north east thead that you might recognise, i had E488 CBB 2500 DAF.
Regards mark
Cheers Mark,
I’ll have to take a look and see if I can find those photo’s - I wish I’d taken more of you guys when you were in loading - but you know what it was like at Tipton - absolute madness - I was usually too busy on the phones or writing up the notes…
I’d have thought Kenny was retired by now? lol
Tho I never did meet him… odd really - after talking almost daily on the phone… was the same with Harry Horn… I called past their yard one Sunday in about 2002… but it looked like it was all shut up and empty… they were somewhere by the Metro Centre…
I guess you are still driving■■?
Andy…

regards mark
Well now Im not sure, Tommy is well past retiring age , but I do know from his grandson he was still driving some time ago, I think the firm at Birtley had light yellow Mercs, I just cant think of their name. Regards Larry.
hi larry
not sure about mercs but i was positive i saw tommy driving a white scania with MANN transport on the side of it , and i am sure they are from washington area, i normally see a few of their lorrys at cramlington on nelson ind estate near our yard.
regards mark
Some great names from the past here, I used to park in London with Tommy Phillips. Goodmans Yard, Tower Hill, Aldgate etc.
Billy Robson jnr, His dad Billy snr (RIP) I worked with at Waughs, and later Young Billy
and Kenny Cooper at CPS. I left CPS very quickly (thank God) and started at Onward Transport Birtley, (the best job ever) and there I worked with Kenny Cooper’s dad Billy (RIP) !!!
Small world isn’t it ■■? regards Kevmac47
Is this the same horns you are refering to ? regards mick.

That firm at Birtley was Ace Hire, as well as hire they also did general haulage. regards Kev.
Hi - it may be - they were dark blue - and always clean and well turned out… but in my time at Tipton (1992 to 2001) they were running DAF’s and MAN… tho I think they still had some old York flatbed trailers (easy to tell with the diamond cutouts in the chassis)…

Small world indeed… I remember Waugh’s well, as TA members they were frequently in our yard for fuel and repairs… as were SA Bell from Malton… quite an aging fleet of dark brown wagons? ERF’s?

Andy I seem to remember your yard was on a tight bend or roundabout , am I right or is the whiskey cloud affecting my memory? regards Kev. Ps. Was the name over the gate?
nope - the spirit isn’t causing hallucinations… when the Black Country Route was opened you would get to us by turning off the island by McDonalds, and P&O Trucks (MAN dealership) into George Henry Road… past Barrat & Baird’s meat packing factory on your left, then a 90 degree right into Bagnall Street and we were on the right…
the traffic office was on the first floor up an outside steel staircase…
