Try Tommy Philips he worked there for some time. The last time I saw him he was driving for some haulier at Birtley ? Regards Larry.

That firm at Birtley was Ace Hire, as well as hire they also did general haulage. regards Kev.

Aye the company I trained with “Drivesafe” based in Lowfell, kept their training vehicle a Ford unit and single axle trailer in the Ace Hire yard at the top of the bank in Birtley, that was early eighties

Thanks for sharing that - good to see the trucks again!

I used to have daily contact with both of these hauliers in my time at Tipton Transport.

Harry Horn was a real gent, always a pleasure to deal with. His sister? Mavis was quite a character too. Their trucks were always well turned out, and the drivers good workers and friendly. Sadly it appears they ceased trading some years ago, but it would be good to see some photo’s of their trucks online to jog memories.

Kenny and Billy at CPS were also characters!!! Their dark blue DAF’s with yellow writing were a common sight in our yard… and they were easy to load up to Scotland… think they worked out of an aluminium plant at Sanquar■■?

Again - I hope someone has some pics they can post…

Andy…

Hi Andy my dad worked for horn’s for about 10 years before they wrapped in.
Last i know Harry Horn was at Be Modern on the Bede Industrial Est doing the transport for them and Mavis had retired .
Regards Rob

Steve, Geordie Horn is still driving for Duncan Adams, your correct, he is in his mid 70’s, his OLDER brother Kit still works for Simpson’s at Birtley as does “their baby brother” Harry who is only about 72 !!! regards Kev.

Good for the Horn lads Kev, Its nice to see Im not the only one still doing a bit of driving , Mind you I dont do ropes & sheets anymore, Ratchet straps yes, & ropes, I can still still do a double hitch if I try hard enough, the driving bit is a doddle at the moment, thank the lord for powered steering, Regards Larry.

Going back a few years when I was a boy I lived at Seaton Burn on the old A1, just opposite the local pit, I used to see Hornes four wheelers loading coal in the landsale pit yard, hand filled bags, their motors were painted red in those days, There was other hailiers too, JJ Brownlee with their Thornycroft four wheelers, S.Brooks , Blenkinsops, Boistons, Lowdons and a lot more that I cant put names to. I did know old Alfie Horne from attending the RHA meetings he was quite a character , he used to say his bit about the state of the haulage industrey at that time when fuel prices was on the up just like to-day, He never backed down if challenged about his comments, I wont mention the persons names that did challenge him, But I must say appart from myself who ageed with him The late Ronnie Henderson was an ally too. Regards Larry.

Lawrence Dunbar:

Andy…

I worked at CPS for about 4 years - wasn’t the best job in the world, but I worked with a great bunch of lads. I remember loading coils from Tipton Transport, often to a little place out in the sticks near Carlisle, the up to the Century (now Hydro) Aluminium plant in Sanquhar. I often think about the guys there, so if anyone can give me any information about these few names I remember I’d appreciate it. Strange, but after nearly 20 years I can still remember Kenny’s home phone number.
Davy Lowther, Jason Ferries, Alan & Tony Canham, John Mckellar, Kenny Cooper.

thanks

Ian Sayer

When I first started doing the job I’m doing now (29 years ago) used to speak to Harry / Mavis. About 8 months ago I changed my pallet carrier to pall-ex ( Moodys at Cramlington was Bedlington ). So got all the info on who to contact what phone number ect.seen this any “transport enquires contact Harry Horn” . So asked one or two drivers and yes it’s the same one. spoke to him on a few occasions ( did not let on who I was ) and yes what a gent.
