Homemade driver aids

What have you cobbled together to make your life easier on the road then?

I keep a broom handle on the bunk as I’m often down some narrow lane or other and the passenger mirror invariably ends up flattened against the side window.

Window down, broomstick out, mirror back and off I go again. Saves a load of faffing about.

see a driver the other week with some handle made up to roll up his straps,he hooked the hook on, stuck the other end in his rear wing support bar and bobs ya uncle, saves alot of time and effort  i would like one!

When I done roll on rolloff I had a broomstick with a hook on the end to grab bungie straps on the sheet to secure them.

years ago doin euro work had a 5 gallon drum on top of truck
fiddled about an attatched a shower head and pipe to it drilled a hole in top at back and plugged with a bolt when taken out it would act as a breather when put on its side
being on top in sun all day it was a cracking shower at side of cab when parked up at night

Ah yes I’ve a couple of those rebar fencing pins that live on the crane, handy for pulling the ends of straps down from the side of a container. Or just using as an extension of my arm whilst staying on the levers.

You can store that on your magnet when it isn’t being used

Same kinda of thing, use to have a 4foot long metal pole that had a hook on the end, you hooked the slings over it and you could easily pass them through pallets etc.

Bit of re-bar bent into a hook and a 4ft scaffold tube, used for gapping backs of timber and plywood.
Thats about it I think
I do like the broom handle idea though

After reading this, made me think. I’ve got a telescopic painters pole at home, which opens out to about 22’. If I fit a right-angle piece on the end, I can use it for oiking straps over the top of loads, quickly measuring the height of the vehicle, lifting side planks on & off, poking car drivers in the next-but-one lane (!) It folds down to about 5’ so wouldn’t be too bad to store either. I’ll have a play around and see what I can do with it I think…

I’ve seen somone using a tennis ball at the fuel pumps to wedge the pump open when it wouldn’t lock, I carry one now and comes in handy for the above…

always had the end clamp off a cheap small set of jump leads for holding the diesel pump catch open
just used it the opposite way … worked every time

Can of Lynx works in fuel pump handles as well
