Harry Monk:
I don’t get it, that Merc must be worth at least £3,000 so if he sold it and slept on a park bench he would be far better off than a “homeowner” who is in £50,000 of negative equity?
So sad,a man who’s paid his way in life only to end up living in his car on the side of the road meanwhile Roma gypsies are just waiting for Jan1st to come over here and claim for everything they’ve never worked for!!
On the same token,I saw that chap who walks the length of the A14 a few weeks ago,god he must have walked a few miles in the 10 yrs I’ve been seeing him walking.
Back when I first started on long distance, there was a guy who used to walk the A1. It wasn’t a motorway, and not even dual for most of its length then. He had all his belongings in two old fashioned prams. He would walk one to a place he could leave it, and then go back for the other.
He would head North for the Summer and South for the Winter, and was very well known by drivers, farmers and householders along the way. As far as I know, he started when he was demobbed after WW2. My guess is that he came back to find his house bombed and his family dead, like so many others at that time.
He’s still there, passed him as I came south,he gave me a cheery wave as I drove past, had all his belongings out on the grass verge behind him.
Would have pulled over and given him some food but to be honest where he’s parked you came round the bend and your on top of him.
hiya,
Heart rending as some of these stories are, but surely it is their own
choice to live that way, I remember many years ago an old man who
lived in a side street not too far from Holloway prison his home was
an old motorcycle combination and the sidecar was his only known
accommodation, I never saw this but it was common knowledge at
the time over forty years ago, Bowkers London depot who I worked
for at the time wasn’t very far away and I believe he used to get a
bit of scran from the London drivers which they would have got from
Covent Garden.
thanks harry, long retired.
I heard of an old guy who lived in a YMCA hostel when he died it was discovered that he had a large sum of money about £60,000 this was in the 1950s.Maybe luxury isnt all its cracked up to be.
chilistrucker:
few years back, there was an old boy living just behind the tescos at ipswich, at the a14/a12 split.
lived there with his dog,in abit of a camp he’d made in the trees beyond the load in bay.
he never spoke, i don’ know his story, but when i nipped in to tesco to do my shopping, (when doing boxes out of felixstowe) i used to get him a few pork pies and bits, and a couple of tins of dog food for the mutt
not been that way for a while, so not sure if they are still around?
Seen him the other day he told me to pass message on …have you got a tin opener?

This fella on the A9 seems to disappear, car & all during the night!! I passed the spot where he ‘lives’ on friday morning at 0500hrs & was keeping an eye open for his car, but failed to spot it…thought maybe I had got the wrong place.
Passed there again this morning & no sign of him or his ‘broken down’ car…Passed again this afternoon & there he is, back in his spot & the cars tyre tracks clearly evident in the muddy grass where he’s been driving in & out of there.
Dunno why he parks there all day but he appears to be kipping somewhere else.
