after taking voluntary redundancy last year. and having a good pension coming in i got a little bored at home. so decided to go back on the road again. after searching many agencies and trying to work out the good ones from bad ones , i have settled hopfully with a good one. i am treated well and with respect . i dont really need the work or the money but i now treat driving Hgv’s as a hobby. there is no pressure on me from gaffers i have worked with over the years, ( i think you all know about how the gaffers know more about trucking from their desk) so back to my point of posting. I was wondering if there are many truckers now treating driving as a hobby. i am looking forward to you’e replies.
Keep safe everyone
I’m in the same position as you mate, work when I want and not a case of having to and finally enjoying driving
Only every driver I’ve had the misfortune to talk to in rdc’s. They are all hobby drivers because the have other interests SAS pensions etc.

Yes, i don’t need the money but I’ll help keep drivers wages down…
Maybe it’s people like you that will contribute to keeping the wages low for the rest of us that need them to survive…#imjustsaying
Nice troll.
I guess I too am a hobby driver. I have a military pension, so do this just to top up the coffers and have something to do. Hence I am quite happy to do an afternoon drive at the drop of a hat. Like today, called this morning, drove from Narbonne to Montpellier this afternoon to deliver three pallets to three locations and back to Narbonne. All in glorious sunshine! Just had a week off after 4 weeks of afternoon work, and will be taking the next 2 weeks off as well. So yes, a hobby!

You don’t need the money, you’re just doing it to keep your hand in, right?
Plus, you can tell it’s a wind-up because he mentions agencies and being treated well with respect, which everyone knows is complete BS!
Used to be a guy drove in the summer for Nestle
Reportedly had been quite high at ERF
Said he didn’t need the money and sent his wages to childrens charities.
See when i retire i’ll be in Spain or Portugal playing golf, no sitting in traffic on the M6 as a hobby.
Few guys in my depot have cashed in their pension and they are in their early 50’s. I didnt know you could do this?
One guy got a 22k cheque and 600quid a month the other guy got a 40k cheque and 1200 quid a month. Think im going to do this enjoy my old age whilst i still have all my faculties.

You can’t without paying a load of tax.
They are likely to be working well into their old age to pay off THE MAN.

Was his name John Bryant?
I’ve been enjoying my paying hobby for 10 years since I retired at 60,just doing two night trunks a week.
I’m not “Keeping wages down” as some suggest, money is good at my place.
Admittedly I pay plenty of tax,but after tax what I get paid doubles my pension.
As for preventing younger drivers working,my son has more paper “Qualifications” than I have but can’t get a job because of the,“No experience BS”!
Still looking for a way to bottle my experience and flog it!

I know a John from Strensall that drives part time for Nestle.
Same her. I do one or two jobs each week. Off course it is expensive keeping the licence up to date. Annual medicals, DCPC, Hiab ticket, public liability insurance, maintaining a second car etc. When the agency calls i ask how much the job pays. “Eight fifty per hour, time and a half after eight, less statutory break.”
“oh, I’m very sorry, that’s insufficient”
Then there’s a half hour delay before they come back with the right rate
If you’re less desperate for the money than the next guy, then you can afford to be fussy about what shifts you pick up.
Job satisfaction is thereby improved no end as a result! The pay doesn’t go down, since you’d just stop doing those shifts at any attempt to push pay in the wrong direction.
Welcome to the club. (I took EVR in 2010).

Do you really think you could live off £1200 a month in the med area right now?
The cash lump sum won’t buy a property there, even at today’s depressed prices.
The £1200 a month won’t be enough to put food on the table, let alone join any golf clubs.
The cheapest prices obtainable locally for regular items require you to speak the language, not live in some “Brit from Bexhill” type enclave to boot.
South Europe isn’t Third World (yet!) although I can understand from news reports why people seem to think it is.
On the other hand, somewhere like Egypt would see £1200 get you through the month with cash to spare. … But of course no one wants to go there, hence why the prices are so low!
The paradox of travel abroad.
I drive every other weekend to keep hand in (and extra dosh) and love it. Not taking work off other drivers, just doing the shifts that they don’t want to.
